It's not just ONE model on ONE magazine cover. This crap is being drilled in our heads all the time. Women are making songs about how fat is better. People are wearing Marilyn Monroe T-shirts, because she somehow became the champion of the fat girl. Not to mention the Internet memes....

Are you having trouble finding images of thin women in the media?

Are those images also being drilled into your head?

More power to her but why do some feminists get all angry about the dad bod trend?

So are you saying that the same people who are promoting images of heavier women in the media (as the OP said that it's "feminists" who are promoting these images) are angry about pictures of unfit men? I've never seen that and this is a non sequitur to me.

Again, I don't understand how any of this is a "feminist" issue - heavier ladies in the media or "dad bodies" - and calling it so just muddies the waters of *whatever* we're trying to talk about (I can't quite figure it out, it's all over the map).

I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say that those that are saying this is a feminist issue are doing so because many men expect women to be of porn star proportions these days and because this bigger woman in the picture (among others) obviously doesnt care what anyone thinks and is thus being rebellious to men's ideal?

Control issues?

Tess now models for a plus-sized clothing line called Torrid and, from what I can tell, it's refreshing for their bigger customers to see someone of her size modeling clothes they're thinking of purchasing. Most plus size models don't even look "fat" by any means. From an advertising standpoint, I think it's a good move to have someone who represents that size that larger women can relate to.

I don't see fat men posing on magazine covers in their underwear saying "look at me, I'm sexy"

Women can poke fun at them and say this is ridiculous if they want to. Who cares?

It really doesn't matter what a "fat" woman does in this world. It seems she will always be criticized. I remember when Adele was at the height of her popularity and she posed in Vogue. So many people made a stink about it. This is a woman who's immensely talented and all people could focus on was her weight.

Not if she hits the gym and loses weight.

Men are fortunate that they're not sexualized everywhere. Do you wish that they were?

Even then... ever see a fat person being made fun of at the gym or while jogging/biking? I have.

If she's lost weight she's not the fat woman, she's the used-to-be-fat woman who looks good now.

Right.

It's not like a "sexy" photo of john goodman is going to make me less attracted to brad Pitt. But maybe it'll make other guys with goodman's build feel more confident. Good for them.

But does anyone want to see Goodman (OK, so he's already famous, but someone that big and not famous) modelling a Speedo? Really?

Everyone has to start somewhere. What I am saying is that heavier people (not just women) are darned if they don't and darned if they do. They're looked at as disgusting even at the gym trying to better themselves.

Probably someone does, yes. There's a lid for every pot. Our preferences are not everyone's preferences. In fact, gay men often LOVE a big bear.

Not in my experience, but then again I don't pay much attention. The gym isn't a social experience. It's pain and sweat.

I'll be sure to cry about it if they ever are. :)

And people make fun of Tess Holliday. Its par for the course. Doesn't mean either should fade from the spotlight.

Again...who cares?

Everywhere in the world you see varieties of body type, age, color. So if this Tess lady wants to be on the cover of people it ain't no big deal.

Let's just get rid of all the undesirable. Is that the point?

I have to disagree here. Men are becoming more and more sexualized and body image has become a male issue as well.

And it's one of the reasons why body shaming in every form should stop. Body shaming has become a bigger issue for all genders. People fat shame men just as much as they fat shame women now.

Hopefully, body acceptance can start with women and men will follow. Or the other way around. Whichever really.

I agree with you but that won't happen. Men will shame women and women will shame men while calling it some sort of feminist victory and the genders will become even more polarized. That is what will happen.

As a now size 22 i admire her courage..i could never do that....be on a magazine.....i lost weight 20 plus kilos in three moths actually when i was a teen.... they put me in a local paper because i lost the kilos and got picked up by the navy.....when i looked at the picture in the paper all i could see was how my teeth werent straight my cheeks looked fat.....and i had this stupid smile on my face..i never felt uglier than i did looking at that picture......i was merciless on myself......i ripped that picture up.......i was a size 10......from a size 18......and it still wasnt good enough.....i hated everything about me in that picture......my huge frog eyes especially.........

i think the emphasis should be more on fitness than looks and personal health both emotional and physical should take precedent over making someone else having a view to admire....why shouldnt there be plus models is all i have to say...because some men dont find them attractive or some women think they ought to be shot and its ugly...

more power to the sisters....to the women who have courage to love who they are inside and out...i certainly dont love who i am....and i really wish i did.....because even when i drop the weight and i will.......ill always be the fat girl.....in my heart....because that image i have in there...never changes.....i think one day the greatest gift ill give my self....is acceptance and loving who i am..maybe one day....ill look in the mirror and nto see my flaws and just see....me....i think everybody should stop judging appearances .....and just see the woman and notice her courage to say ....i am here....and i am beautiful.........instead of the fat........deb
