Author Lauriebell82 Posted September 25, 2009 Author Posted September 25, 2009 Sorry to hear about recent developments LB, but don't let it get you down- there is a job out there for you, you aren't unemployable. You need to keep your confidence up otherwise it will start to show through in any subsequent interviews you may have. I think the Giant Eagle idea is a good one- it will give you some income, and occupy your time, so that you aren't sitting at home worrying all the time about your job situation. Be patient little one! things will work out... Thanks! I can't get ahold of the HR person from Giant Eagle. I may just wait until Monday to hear whether or not I got the job before trying to work at GE. I'm going nuts though, I have to like invent activities to do because I can't even stand to sit around anymore. Patience isn't one of my strong suits as I'm sure everyone here can atest to!
curiousnycgirl Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 I'm just starting to feel worse and worse the longer I am out of work. It's taken a huge hit to my self esteem. My fiance is extremely supportive though, he is always saying that we are a team and will get through it together. LB I totally understand how you feel, but please try to keep this in mind - there are people out there who have not been able to find a new job since being laid off over a year ago and more. They are very talented people, the economy is simply to supporting their positions at the moment. Neither they nor you can take this personally (I know very easy to say, very hard to do) - this economy will recover, just slowly. Thank G-d you have a solid safety net and support structure out there. Good luck!

Thank G-d you have a solid safety net and support structure out there. Good luck! Yeah, I have friends who have gotten laid off 6 months ago and STILL haven't been able to find a job. I'm sure that they just hired someone with more experience and more credentials. A friend of mine told me that very qualified applicants (5 or more years of experience) are applying for the entry level jobs (1-2 years experience) because they are having trouble finding anything else. So if someone has a liscense and 5 years experience I'm sure they will hire that applicant over me who has a masters degree and a year 1/2 worth of experience. It sucks. I'm taking a civil service test tommorrow to qualify for state jobs, as those pay higher and have really good benefits. Once I at least get some kind of job, hopefully I won't feel so anxious and upset by the whole thing.
allina Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 Just wanted to wish you luck on the test tomorrow

Author Lauriebell82 Posted September 28, 2009 Author Posted September 28, 2009 Well, the test went okay, one part of it was hard. I think I did alright though. I never heard back from the employer today. I know that they aren't there anymore either. So that leads me to believe either: a) I didn't get the job and I will get a letter in the mail on Wednesday b) They didn't make a decision yet I'm nervous that I didn't get a phone call today. Usually employers don't tell you over the phone that you didn't get the position, usually it's by email or snail mail. They don't have a lot of computer access so I'm guessing that they won't email me. (I had to mail them my resume)
Star Gazer Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 I never heard back from the employer today. I know that they aren't there anymore either. What do you mean?
Author Lauriebell82 Posted September 29, 2009 Author Posted September 29, 2009 What do you mean? The facility is only open until 2:00 pm. So if I don't hear from them by that time I know they aren't going to contact me on that day. I still didn't hear anything though. I am guessing I didn't get the job.
Star Gazer Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Have you gotten a hold of the grocery store yet? For now, I think that's the best bet. That way, you can keep looking for what you really want, without feeling pressured.

That way, you can keep looking for what you really want, without feeling pressured. Yeah, the lady told me I had to reapply online and she would pull up my application and call me. That was yesterday so hopefully she will call today. I never got a letter or any other response that I didn't get the other job. Should I call and ask or just bag it and go to Giant Eagle?
Star Gazer Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Should I call and ask or just bag it and go to Giant Eagle? Why not do both? Use GE as a backup. Once you feel financially secure with a job, you'll feel a lot better about your search for what you really want.
allina Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 LB, I'm confused why you keep mentioning rejection letters. I don't know how it works in your field but as far as I'm concerned, if you don't get the job you just never hear from the place again.

I don't know, the many jobs that I have interviewed for I have always gotten a letter/email saying that they hired someone else. It might depend on the agency. I haven't heard from them so I'm guessing I didn't get it and they just didn't tell me.

Author Lauriebell82 Posted October 2, 2009 Author Posted October 2, 2009 Is that true? I really wouldn't know... I asked a friend of mine and he said that it depends on the organization and how they do things. Some let you know if you didn't get the job, some don't. I did end up calling them to ask if they made a decision but I just got the woman's voice mail. I asked her to call me back but I doubt she will. Ugh, this is getting so frustrating!
allina Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 Is that true? I really wouldn't know... I interview often and we never call or send a letter telling someone that they didn't get a job. We only contact you if we want you I don't know of any company that sends rejection letters.
Art_Critic Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 I don't know of any company that sends rejection letters. We send them..People that were asked for either a group interview after already going thru the weeding out process or if a person goes thru a face to face interview.. We have in the past (just recently) recommended someone we didn't hire in a group interview to someone we know and they were hired by that company.. There is something to be said about keeping open communication channels after the process..
westernxer Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 I don't know of any company that sends rejection letters. I've gotten a few in my lifetime. LOL
D-Lish Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 I wouldn't worry about it LB. After I shut down my business I didn't find work for almost a year. I interviewed quite a bit, turned down some jobs and just didn't hear from others. When I got the job I have had for the past 6 months, I knew I was going to get it because at the end of the interview the woman asked me if I was interviewing with anyone else- then she called me the next morning. I just got a new job that I am starting soon. I have been in talks with them for quite a while as they are only now opening up their Canadian division. I went two weeks after my first interview before getting a call for another- then it took another week after the second interview before they called me back to offer me the job and negotiation a contract. It's okay to do what I did- I took a job that I wasn't in love with to pay the bills- and that offered me time and space to search for that job that I really, really wanted. Something will come along.

We only contact you if we want you I don't know of any company that sends rejection letters. It is usually good etiquette to send rejection letters so the interviewee is not left with expectations. The business world is pretty small and it is quite possible your future company/manager/boss/lead/VC/etc... was the interviewee. I've gotten a few in my lifetime. LOL ditto here. Giant Eagle won't even freaking call me back anyway, and I'm sick of bugging her. Ugh. I am taking two more civil service tests this week (I got my results from my other one, I did average) for caseworker jobs. Not really want I want to do in the long run but I plan to continue to interview then AT LEAST I will have a job going into an interview. I think it may be hurting me that I'm trying to get a job without currently having one. I'm suspecting that employers are guessing I got terminated. Could I say I just got laid off? I don't know if there is any way that they could verify that or not...
anne1707 Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 I'm suspecting that employers are guessing I got terminated. Could I say I just got laid off? I don't know if there is any way that they could verify that or not... If I am employing someone I would expect to speak to their most recent employer and would find out their reasons for leaving. If someone did not give their most recent employer as a potential reference then I would be suspicious of the applicant trying to hide something such as being fired. I would be extremely surprised if any other employer did not adopt the same approach LB. I know it's not what you want to hear but one of the worst things you can do is tell a lie that can be easily discovered when applying for jobs.
jerbear Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 Hey LB, I have a question for you. Have you had your resume reviewed by someone who is hiring and by a third party (i.e. recruiter)? It is quite possible that your resume and what you are looking for are saying different things.
Author Lauriebell82 Posted October 5, 2009 Author Posted October 5, 2009 Hey LB, I have a question for you. Have you had your resume reviewed by someone who is hiring and by a third party (i.e. recruiter)? It is quite possible that your resume and what you are looking for are saying different things. My fiance reviewed and edited my resume, when he was in college he took a seminar on resume writing and interview skills so he really did an excellent job with the layout. I spoke with my uncle today and he has a lot of connections (he's retired now) through the county due to being a regional supervisor for the social work department for 40 years. He gave me some phone numbers and he said he would call the employers on my behalf. So hopefully that will help give me the little edge I need.
Author Lauriebell82 Posted October 5, 2009 Author Posted October 5, 2009 I HATE BEING UNEMPLOYED!!!! Honestly, I'm going to go nuts. Fiance and I are arguing now about the whole thing and I'm feeling more and more like crap. Anyone wanna give me some support, I need it.
