To many women/girls are over-weight.

Recommended Posts

Ummm is it just me or do some of the food actually look quite appetizing? The chili cheese burger and grilled cheese sandwiches made me feel hungry. o.O Then again, the meat cake was just plain ewww... (And no, I'm not overweight, I'm one of the fortunate Asians with crazy metabolism)

Lots of reasons people are overweight.

-Easily available calorie dense food.

-Fatty, sugary, processed food is easily preserved and ships well. That means.....

-Fatty, sugary food is cheap.

-Not only is it cheap, but it's satisfying AND it tastes good (bad combination).

-Have you visited the fresh produce sections of the big box stores most people shop in? The produce is in awful shape! It's alo relatively expensive. Tomatoes are picked green and artificially reddened. The fruit is not ripe. Lettuce is turning brown. Grapes are squishy.

-Most "whole wheat" products are actually made with white flour and just enough whole grain to make them brown.

-Today's average "small" beverage is the size of what once was a "large". What used to be a "large" order of fries is now a "medium". The cheeseburgers we now view as "kid" size used to be the normal adult serving.

-Years ago, candy bars and soft drinks were a rare treat. Daily treats consisted of fruit, lemonade, home baked goods, etc.

I agree. Some men and some women are overweight. It's definitely not a gender problem. Plus too many people can't tell the difference between too/two/to.

There's this millionaire man who made his fortune writing children's books who is in his 40s and getting the skinny 20ish babes on the show Millionaire Matchmaker.

So all you have to do is write a few children's books and be rich as sin and you'll get many, many skinny young women who will want you just for your money, like they do on that show.

Just go for it?

I mean, all you have to do is write a few little children's stories, and VOILA....you have the woman of your dreams willing to whore herself out to you for your money.

This is specifically for the OP and Boxing...don't b**ch about not getting those young skinny hotties you want to marry....write some children's books and become a MILLIONAIRE.

What the hell does THIS mean? The poster didn't say ALL women are overweight. And even if he did, how the hell is saying "oh yeah, because ALL men have six packs."????????????????????????????????

Too many woman ARE fat. Thats not an opinion its a FACT. And too many men are fat.

And for the first time in history, the less affluent populations are fatter than the rich. Used to be the other way around. We also are witnessing the demise of "healthy" peasant food. Usually the poorer people ate healthier food, but in the USA, that healthier food is being replaced by cans, fast food and junk......

And since WHEN is stating something obvious and true but unflattering GENDER BASHING??

The OP even stated that more women were fat than men which is bull and it is gender bashing because why is it necessary to make it about women?

Whether they are or aren't, I don't expect the world to change to increase my personal dating pool!

Okay guys, go study up on global politics, current scientific theory and the global financial situation. Oh, and don't forget to not only get cut but make sure your muscles aren't the bulky kind. If you're short, start growing...NOW!

Increasing the dating pool or not, fat is just nasty!

We just covered this in a phychology course i took, but i cant remeber the stats.... in any case ALOT of both men and women in the developed world are overweight, but the focus is definately more on women in the media -sorry girls. Women also tend to worry more about weight than men (no suprise there) and the ideal weight for a woman in the developed world in comparison to Ghana is SIGNIFICANTLY thinner, while for men the ideal size is the same. So even if there are equal numbers of fat people in the developed world it is more WRONG according to scociety and the media for a woman to be fat. You will see fat men on TV but rarely will you see fat women (this also applies for older people).

I know walking around winnipeg here, there are alot of fatties -men and women; i wouldnt say there is more of one than the other but just alot of both. Overall it makes sense. Fast food is huge in the developed world and processes foods, frozen meals, and canned foods are getting bigger all the time. In comparison to 200 or even 100 years ago our lives are VERY sedentary, most Canadians barely walk a cumulative hour in a day -some of us walk significantly less than that. Most of us get up and go to work in an office or some other low-activity high-stress job then get off work and go home to look after the kids, make dinner, do some chores, and then relax on the couch for an hour or two before bed... who the hell wants to throw working out or excersising in there? Not many people, not many people at all.

Society in general is too fat.

Look at the men around you. Tell me that they are all slim and muscular.

When I look around, I see just as many men who are fat (and I mean obese) as I do women.

The funny thing is in our society we value women more for their looks and men more for what they accomplish and do. This is sad. Even the so called women's magazines feed into this. My wife gets the People mag, and on the last cover ( a special style magazine), it highlighted three articles....one had to do with flirty hair styles, another was about how to build great cleavage, and the other...I think had to do with makeup. This is how the magazine sells. It promotes outward beauty. If it were an unusual magazine, then it would be one thing, but it is not.

So, since women look at men deeper than just the outer beauty, they tend to look past the physical flaws. Yet us men sit there and look at "fat" women critically as if somehow it is their responsibility to look perfect for us men.

Sorry...I think your premise is true yet false. It is not just the women but also the men.

No I agree with the OP, women are much fatter than men on average

There is a lot of social pressure for men to work out and stay in shape and women demand it in their mates while stuffing dove bars down their own throats

Nah, it's not true. At my work place, it is about 100 employess in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. Definitely an equal amount of overweight men and women. All college educated professionals, most with Masters degrees.

Glad to solve this for 'ya.

Too true! I am constantly working at a time deficit these days. If you decide to pursue adult education, you can expect to log 60-70 hours a week between work, school, and schoolwork. Many people who aren't going to school log overtime in this range anyway. Add in child care, home chores, home repairs, etc. and you get more than you can handle very quickly.

Food cost is a prime factor in what we eat. Healthy fresh produce is fragile and spoils quickly. That makes it expensive. Lean meat such as chicken breast, pork loin, and lean beef is in high demand. That makes it expensive. What is cheap? Fatty hamburger, chicken thigh, and pork steak. Canned foods, and foods such as Little Debbie snack cakes are cheap as well.

I bought a single apple with lunch. It was a nice piece of fruit and cost over $1.50.

Two fresh donuts and a cup of coffee will cost you about $2.00 on the go.

Since I've been involved in selling food for 30 years and been interested in working out and nutrition for probably as long........

I checked several websites. The poster who stated that more men are obese than women seems to be correct. I was surprised. BUt she was right. The only thing I would like to find out is if the BMI was used. Thats just a STUPID index, I don't understand why its still being used.

I also was in charge of selling prepared food for a east coast grocery chain. One unit was located in the inner city. Lots of poor people. We found that $$ has VERY LITTLE to do when it comes to real life shopping. Once prepared foods were included in the food stamp program, it went out like wild fire, AT ABOUT 4.00 a pound!. Plus, unprepared proteins, grains, veggies, etc is FAR FAR less expensive than junk food and snacks.

Poor choices in food is NOT a function of $$ (in a grocery store, I can't say about fast food, I could see that) its a function of convienience and upbringing. THe ONE cheap item that was UNPREPARED but very popular (and I could see it being a filler) was rice. White rice. But, I think that was used as a base to pour something canned over.

POOR in other countries and in other times meant, growing food, small meals and of course all the physical labor involved in SUSTAINING yourself.

This is HARDLY the case now.

The reason why men and women are overweight?

They consume more calories than they expend - common sense. What contributes to this? Americans are probably the 3rd hardest working and productive nation in the world - probably second to Japanese and South Koreans, whom include Saturday in their work week. We Americans have little time to commit to physical fitness.

Most of our jobs are service related and don't require physical fitness. Insurance/finance, energy, computer/technical - are mostly desk jobs.

Our transportation infrastructure is made up of highways and roads, travelled by vehicles.

Take a group of people whom work alot of hours sitting at a desk, have no functional need for fitness and use cars to get to work and you can see they don't spend as many calories as they consume. Again with little free time for fitness.

Europeans work fewer hours and commute via foot, bicycle with public transport for the same distance that we Americans commute. Our transport is laid out differently - but Europeans are thinner because they have more time for active hobbies and use more calories moving around.

Asians commute similarly as they live in tighter communities with little room for personal vehicles but they are genetically predisposed to being thinner - still same results as Europeans.

I'll use this to begin to show how so many people are ignorant and naive about fat/fat loss, dieting and nutrition. And yes, that includes those who have a healthy weight, but still don't "get it". They were never fat as a youngster, and just maintained their worthless insurance company made weight chart.

First, if I were to have over-fat people write down what they eat in a journal for 3 or 4 days and then compared it to what their active basal metabolic rate is (the calories needed just for the body to function, plus some activity), many or most times, they are already eating less calories than they need. So, why are these people still struggling?, if the calorie pirates out there are correct?

They are struggling because their bodies are in a starvation mode. The body has sensed that it does not have enough food to fuel it, so it will hord fat as a protection mechanism. Throw in the bad food choices, and it's easier to store fat, since they have become efficient fat storing machines through calorie deprivation. The body needs the calories to fuel itself, and yes, burn fat. In addition, they usually don't drink nearly enogh water, which also regulates the metabolism. Throw in lack of exercise, and you have the recipe right there.

So many of these people should be increasing their calories, not decreasing them, with high quality foods, eating about 6 times a day, tons of water, and workout-weights and cardio.

Also, we can throw out the weight charts-they're useless if you workout at all. Those charts would have world-class heavy-weight body builder as obese, even if he has 6% bodyfat-obsurd!. Also, the BMI is flawed. despite what our pompous culture has claimed, there are different body types-within reason. Does Jenneifer Lopez come to mind? when in shape, her but looks bigger, to the delight of some men, and not to others, but ever see her midsection when she's in good shape. Yea, she's really fat-not.

Whether you like a certain type of frame is one thing-that's vanity, but lets not say they are not fit. Again, within reason. I see plenty of "thin men with a smaller frame, whose bodyfat percentage is no better than larger framed men, who may also weight-train.

Again, it's preference and vanity. As TBF says, she apparently doesn't like bulky muscles, although I'm not sure what that means. Muscles are either toned and larger or smaller. Any shape is ruled by genetics. Anyway, that bulkier look may not win TBF over, but it doesn't mean he is not in shape. It's relative. Some will like that person.

Last, I think the original premise is very false. I see obese men all the time, and I would say I see pretty, in shape women with fatter men these days(usually the middle aged cowd). Sort of the MILF-couger thing working. The stress alone as you get older is enough to make things difficult to stay fit.

Pyroguy, I used to think along your lines. Then I got honest with myself. BMI is a rough measuring tool using "average body type" assumptions. It is far from perfect, but a good quick classification tool. Nutritionists have pretty well concluded that, "Quetelet's formula is both a convenient and reliable indicator of obesity."

Sure, there are plenty of exceptions to the rule, but the results are a good, if not exact, indicator of where you stand with bodyfat. Also, the calorie modifying circumstances you provide are true, but not to the extent most people would think. "Starvation mode" is only trigggered by very low calorie diets. The common balanced 1200-1600 COD diets do not stimulate a sufficient biological response to cause huge problems. The number of times a day one eats is more helpful with appetite control than total calories burned.

I fully agree with your assesments on the types of food eaten, hours worked, and activity levels of most Americans though. These are certainly the primary problems, and are easier to address because they don't involve detailed analysis of calories, just general lifestyle changes.

Most of the time, lifestyle is the simplest, and hardest thing to change. Lifestyle is the way it is for a reason. Lifestyle is related to free time, disposable income, life skills, parental status, hobbies, career, night schooling, etc. Sometimes doing something about weight takes more resources up front than a person has. Much like credit, they indulge now and pay later.

Yep im fat!! By most peoples standards - its NOT always food thank you very much - I have a muscle swelling issue derived from a medical issue that was left untreated too long I went from petite to not petite in a new york minute.....

here is what I learned - people are fat, skinny, tall, short etc - I would rather be this than the a**holes responding with "yeah too many women are fat" f*ck off! There are bigger problems in the world! Why dont you address alcoholism? Drug abuse? Smoking??

I dont subscribe to a unhealthy lifestyle and half the people who are half my size are unhealthier than me - dont believe it? So Im sitting with my specialist the other week and ask the hard questions - 'will my weight kill me?' his response is as follows -

"had you had high cholestrol, high blood pressure, diabetes etc I would answer yes - but you dont, your at LESS risk than one who smokes and drinks"

Unhealthy lifestyles occur in people fat and thin - so get off the pointing fingers at the obvious and perhaps tackle the sources of said lifestyles.

Any Drs on here want to voice their opinion?

Oh and FYI - yeah my avatar is me - and I dont think that fat and beautiful are opposites

Chat, I understand what you're saying, I really do.

What annoys me that each time we have this sort of fat post we get the same 3 responses.

1) Fat bashers who say fat/obesity is bad and should be controlled with diet and exercise.

2) Those bashing the fat bashers WHILE making sure to state that they are very thin and fit themselves.

3) The one or two people who admit to being over weight but claim that fat doesn't mean unhealthy, they also always have a reason for being over weight that is not over eating and lack of physical activity.

Where are all the fat people (they must be out there since there are many fat people out there) who know that they are fat because they eat too much, eat unhealthy foods and don't work out? Why won't anyone admit that?

It's true, being fat isn't ALWAYS caused by over eating and lack of activity. Being fat doesn't ALWAYS mean that the individual is unhealthy. But lets put the PC BS aside and admit that being fat USUALLY does include a combination of these factors.

I totally agree with you on all points! BUT

Just because a person is thin or normal size does not mean that their calorie intake, lifestyle etc is anymore healthy of that of a fat person - I find most people posting have no real knowledge on the subject - going from one extreme to the other set me on a path of learning about weight, health etc - and while yes it is accepted that generally unhealthy lifestyles make you fat that is not good - I need to point out that said those individuals may have the same lifestyle or even more healthy than some slender individuals but said slender individuals have been blessed with better genetics.

Sorry. In case you missed it, I admit to being fat and admit that it is my own d@mn fault. I know this because when I do exercise and control my eating, I lose weight. I also feel that too much weight is unhealthy, but not the end of the world either.
