Recommended Posts

Hi guys! I just started Weight Watchers today (just the points system.) Right now I'm weighing in at 180. I would love to get down to 130. Hopefully by summer....

I thought you needed at least 20 minutes of carido at an increased heart rate. So lets say you get your heart rate up to speed in 5 minutes, but ya have to maintain that rate for at least 20 mins or the workout didnt burn calories?

Actually your body will burn calories but until you break the 20 minute mark give or take you are only burnin what calories are in your system. After 20 minutes you start breaking down fat that that is stored in the body.

that is a total cop out. people say, "oh, but you have to exercise 20 minutes..." blah blah blah.

like I said, it's better to do a little bit than NOTHING AT ALL.

How do you take days off from your health?

What is your eating plan? It's calories in a week anyway, so try for a conservative dinner!

A few years back I set up my bike on a trainer in my living room. Basically made it a stationary bike. Then when I watched TV I made myself ride the bike while I did it. Before you know it 30 minutes to an hour fly by because you are watching the TV and not concentrating on the bike.

my plan is quasi-weight watcher point system.

here's my beef. i used to do yoga (as an active pothead, I might add) like 1-2 hours A DAY. I had a fabulous bod and could put my feet behind my head.

But this was when I didn't work and was married. Post divorce, with job, suddenly otter has "no time" -- which is true, who has 2 hours a day to do yoga if you work 40+ hours a week?

So I stopped altogether and now I'm as flexible as an 80 year old woman and though I'm not chubby yet, I'm flabby (just as bad, I'd say)...

Now I am trying this new thing where I do 5-20 minutes, and I find that I like how I feel so I try to do more. Addictive personality and such.

I'll let ya'll know if it works in the long run.

I did walk for 15 minutes or so at lunch and I've had today a yougurt, orange, 2 cups of coffee and a rueban (sp?)

I should probably get some water.

I had half a McDonalds cheeseburger. Then I spent the rest of my lunch hour playing with the toy I got and feeding french fries to my dogs.

I had 3 cups of coffee for breakfast. I guarantee I'll eat like a hog when I get home, though. I have trouble eating when I work for some reason. Too much coffee I guess.

outcast: It was very hurtful to be compare to a 6'1" guy. Implying that I am fat
.

That wasn't what I meant. What I meant was that 140 was excellent for a woman. I thought Tudor was encouraging you to stay at your present weight and I was trying to convey that that would be 'way too much for you to be healthy.

It was clumsy wording is all. I think it's great that you're working on your weight - you'll feel SO much better!

I thought you needed at least 20 minutes of carido at an increased heart rate. So lets say you get your heart rate up to speed in 5 minutes, but ya have to maintain that rate for at least 20 mins or the workout didnt burn calories?

It's a common misconception that you need to be doing cardio to burn calories. It's not the case. You do cardio to strengthen your heart but you can do any exercise and that will burn calories even if only for a few moments. The other benefits are increased blood flow and oxygen to the body and brain. They just had another study saying even 10 minutes of walking a couple of times a day helps seniors be much more fit. So the thing is to move whenever you can, even if it's only for 5 minutes.

In fact, you burn EXACTLY THE SAME calories running a mile and walking a mile!!! If you don't believe me, check with Harvard or any other medical site. The reason you burn more calories running for 10 minutes than walking for 10 minutes is that you cover more distance!

Amazing but true :)

A little belated but I think that's a good idea hotgurl, setting a goal for the week. I already eat right and I walk a minimum of an hour a day so the only thing I think I can improve on is going to the gym. I went this morning at the crack of dawn but my class was cancelled. So I worked out on my own which is never as good of a workout. Right now I've been going only 2 times a week (that's on top of my walking). So my goal for the week is to get to the gym 3 or 4 times.

Water is really important in losing weight and being healthy in general. If you become dehydrated your body temperature will decrease. Your body will then try to store extra fat to keep your temperature at normal levels.

This is more of a health reason than a weight loss reason but you really do need to drink the appropriate amount of water to flush the toxins and excess vitamins out of your system.

IME, the sooner you start to change your lifestyle to a more healthy one overall, the better you will feel and the more in shape you will be. Focus on making yourself healthy and the rest will follow.

edit: when I said you I meant a general you, not directed at hotgurl :)

YAY, I wanna play!!! I am 5'2" and my goal is to be 120... I haven't been that size since middle school but it is a good weight for me cuz I will still have some padding!!! I was down to 127 and then I got sick and had finals and it was X-mas break and now I am up to 134.... that is not a good feeling! I feel pretty sexy in general, though... I look good and I am in good shape and my BF is very appreciative.... I just would really like to get down to 120 and stay there and feel less lumpy!!! My diet plan is calorie counting with a food journal I made in excel... it adds cals and subtracts exercise calories that I measure at the gym with my Polar Heart Rate Monitor I try to eat balanced healthy vegetarian food, but sometimes it is hard being in college (Like last night when roomie and study partner wanted to go to IHOP to get dessert) but I manage... I try to eat between 1200-1600 cals each day... the worst food times are the weekends because I go stay with my BF at his house (semi LDR) and he doesn't eat as healthy as me and likes to eat treats... lucky bastard is super skinny tho, and he is buff and exercises, and so do I, but I get sucked into the sweets! My deal is that when I am happy and comfy (like at BFs house) I eat comfy happy (hi-cal) foods... when I am stressed and on a schedule I really control my eating because I am controling everything else as well for maximum eficiency (like if I am at class for 5 hours I will birng about 400 cals of lunch/snack, or somthing)..... I need to be better when I am with the BF, that is my goal right now... Today was a good day so far... going out to fast food for dinner (with friends) but I did my research and found stuff at 3 places that will be healthy and keep me under my goal... and I burned 300 cals exercising.... yesterday was a good day and I was right in my cal zone then went to IHOP for dessert....

Wow, I am rambling, I don't think anyone wants to read all that, oh well...

Anyways, glad you started this thread, I could use some tips and support...

I want to be back to 130 by the end of the month....

Is the 20 minute rule effective regardless of weight, height, gender, amount of calories in system (someone with two donuts and an omlet in their system versus someone with only a cup of coffee) and physical shape? A 300 pound male athlete and a 100 pound sedentary female - who would be out of breath in 1 minute - for boh it would take 20 minutes to start burning fat? That's hard to make sense out of. What is the science behind it if anybody knows I am interested to know as I have heard of it before.

Exactly. And, as Otter notes, any distance is way better than nothing.

There's an ongoing debate between proponents of the 15-20 minute cardio and the 30+. The 15-20 can be more intense and potentially increases your resting metabolism more. The 30+ burns more calories directly and helps your body get better at digesting fat.

The answer is probably to do the one which feels best - you're more likely to stick with it. I prefer 30 minutes - more endorphins.

Romeo did half an hour cross-country ski-ing after work yesterday evening. Woohoo! :bunny:

Fatburning varies from person to person, obviously. First of all, calories in the system does not refer principally to food in the stomach, but rather to carbohydrates stored in the muscles concerned.

Two key factors in determining the time taken for fatburning to kick in are:

- the efficiency of the fatburning mechanism. This is practised. Endurance athletes actually metabolise fat almost as readily as they do carbohydrates.

- the point at which the body actually needs to switch over. Obviously the faster you go, the quicker you run thru the energy stores.

Actually, the snow has melted here so I was doing it on a machine :o

The snow is pretty unreliable here at the best of times, so I seldom find myself doing the real thing - I'm usually pretending. Is this the exercise equivalent of porn? :lmao:

i always wake up with the intention of eating breakfast. then all of a sudden it's lunchtime and i haven't eaten yet. My beat-endorphins kick in and i get spacey and out of it and don'te at much lunch.

yesterday i ate half a mcDonald's cheeseburger for lunch and 1/4 of a frozen pizza and a half of a piece of cheesecake for dinner, and i mainly subsited off of 5 cups of coffee. jeebus i am unhealthy. my dogs are all overweight because i leave food on the table half eaten for 5 seconds, they grab it off the plate and eat it, and i'm too lazy to fix something else.

It's as easy to nuke a potato and a few veggies as it is to nuke leftover pizza.

Or just buy the nukable meals - there's bunches of them that have vegies and all the goodies you need to eat. Even McDonald's has grilled chicken fillets and salads.
