threebyfate Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 'Grats sb! It's a wonderful feeling when you have your body back. Never had washboard abs either but have some visible definition. It is about losing body fat, as well as working on core strengthening. The more you strengthen your stomach muscles, the less work for your back. A very good thing.
sb129 Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 I think not carrying a 10lb baby a week post term would probably help with that too! My stomach is my most hated body part. I hated it before and I hate it even more now- I have pretty strong muscles but there is this little pooch that is covered by saggy stretchmarked skin now that is UGLY! No bikinis for me this summer! Thankfully you can cover a stomach up, so its no major drama. If I have to have the next WB via C-section I am going to ask them to give me a wee tuck at the same time...
threebyfate Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 Yes, carting around humongous babies don't help!
Author Leigh 87 Posted November 15, 2010 Author Posted November 15, 2010 Sb123 - wow well done on reaching your pre pregnancy weight! I do not plan to have kids, however, I have always wondered how hard it would be to get back to your pre pregnancy body? Do things all go back to how they were before? About body pump - I SWORE by that class for the past 4 years. It keot my body in very good shape, without making me stocky - I tend to look stocky if I lift heavier than what I can do in a body pump class. Body pump was awsome though, at my gym they call it " body blitz" and I am considerinf starting it again, but have been busy with Tracey Andesons method, as it is getting better results for me so far. Throwing a pump class in would not hurt though! Threebyfate - I have never had a 6 pack, either; I genetically have an apple midsection, but with a lot of Pilates and core work, I can get the stomach part flat; so my 32 DD'S and bubble butt stick out, and the dredded stomach is flat. I honestly have to do a lot of work to get a flat stomach. I do not actually like 6 packs, but a lot of women love them and feel great with them. I like " nice lines" - so you can tell the core is worked daily, but without a hardcore 6 - pack.
sb129 Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 No all things do not go back to how they were before. My boobs are smaller and saggier and I have stretchmarks on my tummy that have faded thankfully. I have to work harder now to get the results I want. That said, one of my best friends is naturally very thin, she put on the same amount of weight as me and is now slimmer than she was pre baby thanks to breastfeeding. She actually had to go on a special diet to increase her calories her baby was taking so much from her. I didn't lose any weight BFing at all, some peoples bodies hang on to their fat stores..
eerie_reverie Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 (edited) 13.1 miles. Halfway there. I want to vomit. I got an ipod nano and a nike sports pack, which plugs into my shoe and keeps track of the distance, time, calories burnt, splits, etc of my runs. It also encourages me to keep going by yelling out _ miles left! every mile. It's pretty sweet. I'm turning into such a yuppie. According to the program, I burnt more than 1400 calories on my run today. Is that possible??? If so, how the fcvk am I not losing any weight?? My diet consists of: breakfast: 2 egg omelete with veggies and cheese lunch: 1 serving meat, 2 vegetable sides snack: 1-2 cups nuts and a bunch of fruit dinner: 2 servings of protein with a bunch of veggies either in salad form or in a stiry fry or something I avoid sugar, flour, and, usually, grains. I don't drink sodas but I do drink beer (although I gave it up for a whole weekend in favor of a vodka + pot concoction, which fcvked me up real fast, which I liked until I flipped out in the middle of a party.) This is a lot less and a lot healthier than I've ever eaten before. Where the fcvk are my washboard abs, btcih?!!!! One other slightly disconcerting thing I am noticing is that lately I am nauseous all of the time at the very thought of food. I used to pride myself on being the world's least picky eater, but these days, the very smell of fried chicken or anything fishy makes me wanna gag. Has anyone ever experienced this? At first, I was worried that I could be pregnant, but given that the only penetration I've had lately involved a half-flaccid dick doubly-wrapped, AND I just got my period, I'm guessing that's not the case. You'd think that after running 13 miles (and walking another 2) I'd want to stuff my face with some pizza, but that's not the case at all. I could barely get a piece of fruit down. sb129 Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 a whole cup of nuts has lots of calories- nuts are high in fat. They are good for you, definitely, but I think the recommended healthy daily intake is a small handful.

Yes but given that the old me (which was the same average size 6-8) would have eaten 12 chicken wings dipped in a pint full of ranch, a basket of fried pickles, and a block of cheddar in leiu of the nuts, I feel like I've really made some improvements. That's why I'm frustrated that I'm not seeing results.
Star Gazer Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 I AM SICK of STAR and others who ASSUME that lifting heavy is THE ONLY way for women to attain their BEST possible bodies! SERIOUSLY! it is not what ALL women find works best for THEIR bodies, lol! Where did I say that? All I said was that I watched the videos you suggested, and I'm failing to understand how that can be considered a workout. Straight up, that's my opinion. I didn't see any of those women even break a sweat, or even breath heavy. Does kneeling over and lifting your leg (unweighted) 50 times even get your heart rate above that which you get sitting on the couch or cleaning out the fridge? I'm being serious. STAR and others - what is the balance of cardio and lifting you prefer? I am just curious as to what works best for you. My weight/strength training is combined with my cardio. With the exception of a random run, I don't do cardio without also doing weight/strength training at the very same time. For example, tonight's workout was 10 rounds of: Run 200 meters 7 chest-to-bar pull ups 7 front squats @ 65% of 1RM 7 handstand pushups You do that series of 4 exercises 10 times (10 rounds) and go as fast as you can. That's somewhat of a typical CrossFit workout. Where is there "lifting heavy" in there? You're making assumptions, and won't even listen to the fact that the same, if not better results, are possible through means beyond an exercise video. STAR - I am not having a go at you, I just sense that you do not appreciate what I have gone through with my body, and what I have achieved with it - I hear you love cross fit; the thing is, I DO push myself to my own limits, within my chosen exercise. Yes, you are having a go at me, but that's okay. Why can't we have differing opinions? Why do I have to agree with you? Why can't I say that I don't think those videos are a "workout"?
Author Leigh 87 Posted November 16, 2010 Author Posted November 16, 2010 Wow eevie, you have made some pretty big changes ( for the better!). I actually would not have more than 1/4 cup of nuts per serve - I am the ULTIMATE NUT fanatic. I used to binge eat, nuts were one of the things I could eat A TON of, without feeling ill - my body built up a HIGH tolerance for nuts and fat. I can have far more than the average person, without feeling ill int he least. I can safely say, that nuts are the number one thing I have to watch out for! Honestly, they are pure fat, with no protein or carbs in them ( aside from cashews and pistachios, the rest are pretty low in car). nuts are basically pure fat, and trust me, they are SO EASY to over consume. I honestly thing the nuts could be putting your calories over the limit needed for you to lose weight. Because your actual diet looks great! Perhaps all the protein you eat prevents you from getting as hungry as usual? Protein is known to keep people full for longer. Did you previously eat less protein like meat and chicken and eggs, and eat mroe criss and chocolate and other nutrient poor foods? People who previously ate high junk food diets, who start to eat less junk and eat good quality proteins, often find they are way more full; their bodies are eating more high quality proteins, and are getting what they need to function well. Lastly, are you eating enough carbs? A cup of nuts and all that protein with every meal, could mean that your body needs more carbs to furl your workouts better. I have also felt sick in the past, when I ate too few carbs, and ate mostly fats and proteins; I felt ill when I did try to vigorously exercise.
hotgurl Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 well I have lost 10 lbs than I got lazy and took a break. For 4 months. I didn't gain anything but I also didn't lose. I am on W.W again but my biggest problem is exersicing. During the week it is ough to fit in plus it is dark all the time now. I hate witner. This post made me laugh, haha. "Where the fcvk are my washboard abs?" Are you losing any scale weight, gaining weight, or staying the exact same? You can use the scientific method as an approach to changing your body composition. You can make specific "tweaks" to your diet and note the results. For example, you could remove the nuts from your diet (or cut them down to a smaller serving) and see what happens. My guess is that you'll be hungrier, more likely to eat "bad" food to compensate. If you don't your performance will likely suffer. However, it could also give you the edge you need to start losing weight/fat. The body always follows the laws of thermodynamics. Another thing you might want to keep in mind is that you're (unless I missed something here) only hitting fat loss from one angle, which seems to be your long distance runs. You might not be burning as many calories as you think you are. The longer you do an activity, the more your body adapts. You might want to incorporate some speed work (sprints) into your training. This will not hurt your efforts in long distance running (other than if you do sprints right before the race), and might help you improve your VO2 max. Sprints are also notorious for causing fat loss without burning up too much muscle.

Where do you come up with this stuff?
USMCHokie Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 That's absolutely, 100%, not true. Where do you come up with this stuff? I am currently eating some delicious salted nuts. Nutrition info for about 2 handfulls of my nuts: Total Fat: 13 g Sat Fat: 2.5 g Poly Unsat Fat: 2.5 g Mono Unsat Fat: 7 g Sodium: 115 mg Potassium: 190 mg Total Carbs: 9 g Fiber: < 1 g Sugar: 2 g Protein: 5 g Pretty good food, if you ask me...and who doesn't like eating nuts...?
Star Gazer Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 some delicious salted nuts about 2 handfulls of my nuts :lmao: I love nuts too.
Author Leigh 87 Posted November 17, 2010 Author Posted November 17, 2010 boy do we all love nuts. The great thing about them, is that all sorts of nuts are good;) HOKIE - I often eat two hand fuls of nuts. Not many people I know can eat as many nuts as I can without feeling ill. I prefer nut butter to whole nuts though yum. STAR - Oil is pure fat, where as nuts do contain some proteina nd carbs, however; I do not count the 4g of carbs in a large hand ful of most nuts, those sort of amounts of carbs are too little to matter to my maintenance, or weight loss efforts. STAR - I have trie dlifting heavy weights - based on my body type and face, it actually does not suit me to have a body that is any mroe developed ( in terms of muscle) than it currentlty is. I know what works well for me thanks - and it is nto heavy weights. I have tried it, and I prefer the way I look now. I look better when I am " slim yet toned", opposed to " ripped with very little body fat". And YES Traceys dance cardio IS a workout ! Look, if you do her matt moves to the best of your ability, and add more reps until you get tired, they ARE hard lol! Really - it is like any other form of exercise - if you push youself, it is hard, where as if you do not use correct form and do not carry out the exercise properley, and if you do not do enough reps to get tired, then no, it is not a good workout. I can assure you though STAR, that Traceys daance cardio AND her matt workout ARE hard lol. If the women are not breaking a sweat dancing, they are not dancing hard enough? The MATT moves are mot along the lines of Pilates - they do not necessarily cause a sweat, but they do work. I have noticable results, and the moves are challenging.
Author Leigh 87 Posted November 17, 2010 Author Posted November 17, 2010 NEWS: I weighed myself yesterday, for the first time in about a week and..... 114.5 EMPTY stomach, and 115.6 FULL Stomach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yay yay yay. Now I have to maintain, because I will ruin my life again if I go any further. Which I will if I keep a scale at my house. I am bringing my scale to my therapist tomorrow, and am only getting it off her each session. I will weigh myself in the toilets naked after the session, and then give the scale back to her. What I CAN control, is calories; I can make sure I eat to the recommendations, so that I am not losing more weight. I am going to go do Traceys Matt moves now - I consider Traceys matt moves as something you do IN CONJUNCTION with other exercise! Traceys matt moves are like doing a pilates class every evening ( without the reformer) . it gives you results, but you need to do other forms of exercises, such as intensive cardio OR weights, to attain your goal.
tman666 Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 That's absolutely, 100%, not true. Where do you come up with this stuff? Hey now, she's an expert in this stuff! Don't you dare question her authority in such matters! IZ VERBOTEN!

Mme. Chaucer Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Hello! I have just lost 27 pounds through a low calorie diet. I am over 50 and have always been rather thin, and also always been a prodigious eater. Sadly, my metabolism no longer allows for that kind of indulgence unless I am willing to be overweight. I basically focussed on portion control (my nemesis); as well as avoidance of many types of fats and carbs. I ate lean protein, vegetables and fruit mainly. Working out has been a challenge for me. I was a well trained professional dancer, but a car accident in my late 20's decimated an ankle and stopped that. It also limited what I am able to do. I have extreme traumatic arthritis, quite a bit of pain and tiny range of motion in that joint. I can't do anything at all with impact. My lifestyle is very active. I live on and take care of a big farm with a lot of animals, I ride (heels down is difficult for me) and train dogs for working livestock. That would be easier if I were able to run sometimes, but I manage. I train about 5 - 10 dogs 5 days a week. I've used a pedometer and usually average about 10 miles a day of walking when I train, on very hilly terrain. It's a lot of exercise, but I don't sweat unless it's very warm (or I am frustrated with one of my student dogs!) I'm not sure about the calorie burning of the care of over 100 sheep, but trimming their feet is quite a workout. Outside of that, I am now addicted to classical Pilates. I think it ties into my years of ballet and has awakened my muscle memory from those days. It has really brought back my figure and I love the feeling of being in control of my body that way. Some of the exercises on the Reformer I need to modify because my ankle gets in the way, but it works. I take two classes per week and have a Reformer at home, which I use about 2 - 3 times per week as well. I will still lose about 10 more pounds. Currently I am maintaining where I am, and I will "diet" again after Thanksgiving. I am a real "foodie" and I LOVE to eat, and sometimes to eat a lot. I'm quite a cook and entertainer as well. My plan and hope is to be able to incorporate indulgences into my eating lifestyle, but in moderation. I have not ever succeeded in doing that before.

If your ankle mobility is an issue and you're looking for low impact exercise, swimming could be a good addition to your training arsenal.
Mme. Chaucer Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Have you considered swimming? If your ankle mobility is an issue and you're looking for low impact exercise, swimming could be a good addition to your training arsenal. Swimming is super good for me, but I rarely do it. I have limited time to go somewhere to work out, due to my work and all the stuff that needs to be done here on a 60 acre farm. Already there are not enough hours in the day. Since I love the Pilates Reformer class, for now that is my "outside" fitness choice.

I think you (Collectively) can incorporate indulgences provided they are scheduled into the diet. Then stick to it. Even dieting hard, like people in a bodybuilding, will schedule a cheat meal once a week. Some people Im aware of will have an entire cheat night, but strictly only once a week.
