They walk everywhere and take the metro. THAT is why they don't get fat.

Diet and Excercise

Consistently

That is the only way to take it off and KEEP it off. There is no quick and easy way.

I haven't read the book, but I remember this picture representing two women. One of them had a normal size and a basket filled with cheese, wine, Evian mineral water and grapes, the other woman was supersized ans was showed eating a hamburger, with what looked like a McDonalds menu near her.

I guess the main point of the one is that alimentation is indeed the key to being healthy. Unfortunaltely, this has to do with the consumption behaviour related to food. And it is very much influenced by the country you're in. So French women do have it easier, because French people have certain very healthy consumption habits, like eating lots of fish and seafood. So you see, if indeed you want to lose weight, it's not simply about eating more diary products and vegies. What it is indeed about is changing your lifestyle as far as eating goes.

I remember reading a few paragraphs from this book on msnbc. Sounds interesting... but if you really want to make a change, make an appointmet with a nutritionist, join the Weight Watchers and join a gym club. Easy as pie :).

Most French women walk more, it seems, so they're also burning calories by simply doing the little things: going to the market, visiting a friend across town, etc. Public transportation almost guarantees that you stay in shape, since taking the metro requires that you walk in order to get to the station. When I visited Europe and South America, I never thought I'd walk so much in my life. It kept me lean and mean.

I think America has a huge problem in this regard... too much fast food and too little exercise. The fact that we need to look overseas for inspiration says a lot about how clueless we've become. But then again, thank goodness for neighbors.

Keeping somewhat fit is definitely a lifestyle change... unless you're an athlete, those short-term diets are ineffectual.

When I went to Paris last year, I was amazed at the amount of walking everyone did. So it made sense they were all in shape. I did not see any overweight people who were not "tourist."

What I also noticed is the sidewalks in Paris are much wider than the roads. The exact opposite is true of the USA. Even in places like NY where the streets are wider than say, LA, it's still no comparison to Paris. Walking is encouraged.

It'd be nice to have a system like the Metro here in LA with wider sidewalks. If so, I would use it more than driving. It's cheaper too when you consider the cost of gas for my V8 Tundra :)

One does a LOT of walking when you're a student or have time to visit. If you've got a car, you're in the same position as in the States. My friends have all cars. They don't walk, trust me.

IT's the eating. That's the REALLY big difference.

My part of the world has a lot of very healthy folks. The weather is very moderate and there are lots of parks and bicycle paths. A lot of people commute to work by bike or walking. I walk everyplace I can - I live close to downtown and I walk home from work. There's a big push on to participate in Bike to Work Week next week, too.

Besides, it's a beautiful safe city so it's not a big deal to just head out for a walk.

It helps a lot when your municipality is committed to fostering healthy lifestyles by doing things like building bike paths and putting up bike racks around town.

I gather that a lot of cities have developed mall walking programs - you can be inside and safe and walk quite a bit if you do a few circuits around your local mega-mall. That might be a solution for some of you who live in places which are not really condusive to outdoor exercise.

They were talking about this book on "Oprah" and she had the author of the book as her guest. She said that walking is key and that is pretty much all the exercise French people do...that being the reason why there are hardly any gyms in France. Also, she said eating in moderation is key, as is eating slowly and savoring every bite. One of Oprah's guests tried it and she lost a significant amount of weight in a relatively short period of time.

Posted

Well, if you eat moderately and slowly, why would you need so many diets, and gyms and exercises. If it's that easy...

It's just a book and its PR reps will do whatever then can to see it sold. They're not selling a new diet, they're selling the French flavour. Open your eyes and see that.

Truth is there's no such thing as an easy and free ride towards losing wight. It takes a lot of effort and determination. It demands change.

Change in the way we use our free time, change in the way we eat and most importantly, change WHAT we eat and the way we cook it. We are what we eat. No exercise will ever turn into result unless accompanied by a decent diet.

It ISN'T easy for people to eat in moderation. Everything here is supersized and everyone indulges in more food than what is healthy for them, which is why they need diets and gyms.

Actually she lost a LOT of weight.

I know quite a lot chubby french girls! Just like in every other place in Europe! No such thing as the French myth. In fact, I consider Paris a very "unhealthy" place! (Just like any other city). When I lived there for two years I put on quite a bit of weight (only time in life I put on weight like that). It's a smelly place, you can't really run anywhere. The metro SUCKS!! Parisians don't look any better then people in other places. When you go out to the villages you'll see chubby girls and guys with tummies!

I'm sure there will be a book next year saying: "russian women don't get fat". My god, just be reasonable! We all know how weight loss works! It's not difficult to figure it out! The more you think about it the fatter you will get.

The more time you will spend in bed reading about those slim women in France the more cellulite you will develop.

Now, in the states everyone sticks to a French diet. What a joke!

No kidding. When I visited the states I felt ridiculously buff and in shape, just by comparison. And last night some American friends cooked for me... very kind of them, but boy was it fatty and sugary

Conducive? Toimeme, are you feeling ok? Is the lack of carbohydrates fuddling your grey matter? :p

This is my seco d year here and there a few things I agree with and another few things I don't agree with with regard to your post.

Th French women I've seen, met, befriended were in their majority thin. There sure are a overweighted people in Paris as well as in any other capital of the world.

The metro, also rather smelly, it does take you to most places.

Jogging: there are hundred, thousands of fabulous places to jog. Now, if you're only stayin' in the clubbin' or old part of the town, sure as hell you won't find too many parks around there. Other than that... you can have lots of green places to your disposition. Much like in any other capital of the world.

So anyway, my take after 2 years of stayin here: they DO eat a whole lot more healthier than in my parts of the world, and NO, actually, women are much much more thinner that one would think. Maybe not teen agers, but even those. Honestely, women who are over 35 look their best, are very VERY much taken care of and are the ones with the most sense in fashion.

Oh, I sincerely doubt that the slimming book sells the French habits of eating. Whet they're doing is simply selling the Parisian flavour. That's all.

hey curlyiam

I didn't mean to sound so negative about France and that book. It just seems surreal that you'll have this slightly chubby chick in Texas who watched Oprah last night and will now drive around in her chevy for two hours to find that "special French fish", some oysters and Roquefort to lose weight instead of biting into a healthy American apple and making some potatoe and leek soup for dinner!

I agree that french women are lovely looking and for sure slimmer than American women (but I have lived in Zurich for a while and women looked amazing, for example). We should also not underestimate pressure here. There is a lot of pressure to stay slim in some European cities and the problem of Anorexia is much higher, so who knows how these women stay slim.

I do agree though that a lot of Americans have lost their ability to "taste" and enjoy those natural flavours! Even if it is the most caloric cheese! Who cares! Eat it! Flavour it! And you will be happy and satisfied for the rest of the evening. Eat some lovely chocolate and enjoy it! I do not believe in light products as you can't fool your body.

The reason why I was a bit negative about paris is, that I LOVE nature and outdoor life. I love to swim, run and ski and always prefer the country side to any city.

Paris to me is just another big city, and I agree there are parks and green areas but nothing compares to a day out in the mountains skiing or a 15 k run all by yourself in the woods.

That's what works for me when it comes to staying slim. Going outdoors with my dog, having fun! And, tant pis ....-hHave that fondue in the evening and enjoy yourself :-)

I hear what you're saying. The thing is, if she is hiking like you say, but goes on to eating hamburgers and French fries, it all goes to waiste.

So yeah, if that chubby girls startes incorporating more fish, more turkey and more cottage cheese into her alimentation, maybe that book ain't that bad.

I totally agree to the rest of your post - lots of my friends that work in Paris hate the city because it is indeed crowded and cosmopolite and expensive.

you know what I find surreal? that people would spend all this money on books that tell them NOTHING new, only to ease their guilty conscious that they are doing something to lose weight. Not that it's the case of this precise book.

Respect these simple rules:

1. Exercise every other day for 30 min - 60 min (average three times/ week) .

2. don't eat after 18.00H

3. don't fry your food and don't incorporate oil or grease in your food.

4. Drink 2 liters of water a day

5. Eat 5 to ten of vegetables and fruit per day

6. Don't eat sweets - replace sugar with sweet N Low

7. Watch the size of your portions

8. Eat fish at least twice a week

and it's certain you'll lose weight in NO time. And save a lot of money. And keep a healthy body, away from all those crazy diets destroying your body.

Would also like to add: Drink lots of tea. Green tea, especially, after dinner. It's a great habit to get into. :)

Maybe there are more overweight people in the US than any other country, but we are not ALL fat. I live in Southern Cali and there are more fit people here than unfit. A lot of people here are very health conscious and work out a lot....some even to the extremes. Many females are in fact anorexic.

I never got as far as California ;) But yes, I think it's true that you have more extremes. A couple of my american friends are incredibly fit.
