irc333 Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 I'm not sure if this is entirely gender or even dating related, but it could lead in that direction. Let's say you're a woman, you have an opportunity to attend an event...let's say you probably find out ahead of time there will be mostly men at the event, or let's go to extreme here, it's ALL men. And let's say this is for a get together for a hobby you particularly enjoy, but then find out ahead of time...it's full of SINGLE unattached men, and you're a single unattached woman. After finding this out, would you be intimidated of even going? Would you not even go KNOWING it was ALL single/available men? I know some women HERE would probably say they'd bring at LEAST one female friend with them to make them comfortable. But, what does that say about the woman? She's insecure or is this normal....that perhaps too much testosterone in an area is too much for a owman to handle? Heck, I know guys that won't attend events if it's all women, too much estrogen. Any feedback on this? I think it's more of a problem for women than men, because I think women are the type to be easily intimdated by a bunch of single men in a room, with her being the ONLY one? That at least ONE other female should attend, so she doesn't feel left out?
LisaLee Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 (edited) It would be a little uncomfortable at first, but not too bad. I think if one goes in thinking the whole group of men wants to bone them it would make it more uncomfortable. I use to sometimes go to Warhammer 40K (hardcore nerd boy hobby) events at a local geek store. The testosterone was through the roof, not to mention the majority of the guys were gaming nerds who usually don't associate with women. Like I said, it was a little uncomfortable at first, but very quickly gotten over. After all, I was there to watch the game, not to pick up a man. Edited September 19, 2010 by LisaLee
TouchedByViolet Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 Heck, I know guys that won't attend events if it's all women, too much estrogen. are you kidding me? From a guys perspective the more women the better. Most places I go single women are low in supply and high in demand by single men. Using a basic economic principle this increases the value of the women for no personal reason of her own. It would be nice to go where lots of women are just so us guys could catch a break.

The bf and I used to stand and gawk at some of the models (terrain, units etc) in a store (and their prices!) Probably the most testosterone-filled event I've participated in was a computer game tournament. There were probably at least 60 guys there, including spectators, and not a girl in sight. The following year's tourney had one other girl, but it really didn't make a difference to me.
Author irc333 Posted September 19, 2010 Author Posted September 19, 2010 Yes, very very true, and that does make 100% sense, I think it's the "Married" or "takeN" men that avoid such groups....single would be a HAVEN. lol Though, unfortunately, I heard speed dating events have a HIGHER female to male ratio though, go figure. are you kidding me? Yeah, it was at a venue where there was gaming going on. I heard from a friend of a woman, that she planned on attending, but got cold feet at the last minute. I think if one goes in thinking the whole group of men wants to bone them it would make it more uncomfortable. It was a similar event that some of you spoke of...gaming group of some sort. Yeah, personally I think said woman should get over themselves. Though some of the women in question were pretty darned attractive, esp. the one in question that got cold feet. It was a Facebook event, and the guys were trying to assure here that everyone in the group was okay, I was wondering if that just made matters worse? lol I think she was thinking of more than quivalent, "Come on, we're harmless, we won't bite!" And then pictured some cartoon pic of some pics with wolves bearing their fangs leering. lol

Although, I will admit, when I went to 40K games I probably did get a lot more attention than I deserved, and there were some stares. But like I said before... everyone was there or the games, not a pick up.
Els Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 Here in the U.S. we have these group of gamer girls who go to these major gaming conventions and are drop dead gorgeous. It is like their shtick, they are the hot gamer girls and they can kick your @ss in Street Fighter. My brother told he battled against one online on the PS3. At the very end a little box popped up that said You've just been beaten by a girl! Lol!! That was awesome. One thing, though, that irks me about the gamer-girl hype is that whereas male players are mostly famed for their skill, female players are known by how 'hot' they are. One hears plenty about 'hot gamer girls'... but very little about 'good but average-looking gamer girls'. Whereas most of the guys who are good actually really look like dorks... but noone cares about that. Yeah, now that I think about it, maybe that's the one thing that may bother me. I well know how silly and immature young male nerds can be regarding females, I even know that they have this system going on in some cybercafes that when a girl enters, people in the game go, 'Hottie at PC14!' 'Naw she's not that hot, the one at 50 is better.' There's probably lots of talk about me behind my back at such events, and most of it centred on my appearance. But meh. I love my games, and I'm not giving them up because of some prepubescent virgins. Gee, that turned into a long rant.
LisaLee Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 I understand exactly where you are coming from, Elswyth! I just watched a gamer girls music video the other night where 5 very hot female gamers were dancing around in sexy cosplay reveling in their nerddom and kick assery. The guys in the video were overweight, geeky, and your typical nerdboy. I thought it was cute... but come on? Why does there have to be such an emphasis on looks over gaming prowess? I think it goes to show how hypersexualized females have become in our world. Ahhh, I need to get off my soap box. But I was also going to add it may also depend on the event. We have been talking about gamers where it is a given that the guys are usually more socially awkward. But what if the get together was something more "masculine"... say an MMA bout? Would the attitude be different? Methinks so.
Author irc333 Posted September 19, 2010 Author Posted September 19, 2010 Yeah, I heard about said gamer girls, on some message boards, some of the gaming gents give them a lot of flack for just using it as a marketing ploy to buy products. (Kinda like in the 80's where they'd put a model next to a tool kit or a hot rod car, etc, just so they could get guys to buy man related product) Some were even questioned on the fact that they were just "Booth babes" that had no real passion for gaming or ANYTHING nerdy, and just doing a simple modeling gig (not the gamer girls that you speak of, but some even questioned their intentions as well) So there's been a lot of debate on that. But it's kind of amazing how when I grew up on the 80's, and it was mostly men that were into the ATARI 2600, D&D, 3rd Ed. and such, and PRETTY women were cheer leaders (no pretty women into video games, and ESP comics...in the 80's) Yes, you didn't see pretty women gaming in the 80's, or at least to the extent men did.....perhaps if they dated a guy into said hobbies, they'd kind of play along, try out a few games of pac man or D&D and quickly loose interest. Hardly meet women in their 30s now into that kind of thing, but I do catch one here and there. Now, we've come a long way, and now there are actually ATTRACTIVE women passionate about these things....meh go figure....when back in the day, most women's interests were girly things like make-up and fashion design/clothes/ shoes. If it wasn't for the prices WH40K would be a hobby of mine. But I couldn't justify spending thousands on minis. Woggle Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 I actually enjoy it when my wife has her friend's over. They are a lot of fun.
EasyHeart Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 I have trouble believing there is any testosterone at a computer/video game tournament. . . .
loverofloveandstuff Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 I've been to plenty. Ditto. I like the company of a group of men. As long as I knew a couple of people going I wouldn't have a problem.
Rorschach Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 I have trouble believing there is any testosterone at a computer/video game tournament. . . . Close minded opinion is close minded. On topic: From a guys perspective I'd love to be in a room full of available women, I see no downsides at all. From a girl's perspective I could see it as intimidating, I think it's because guys come off as predators when trying to find a date. A wolf in a flock of sheep is a happy wolf, a sheep in a pack of wolves is not a happy sheep.
brainygirl Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 For me it depends on the reason I'm going. A work event that is all women or all guys isn't going to bother me because I know people will be proffesional. A party were there are lots of loud, rowdy, drunk guys and few women isn't a fun place to be. On the other hand, when I worked in nursing it was all women and even as a woman myself, I hated it because of the gossipyness and cattiness that went on. (didn't help that I wasn't a cool one who was let in on things)/
Stung Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Depends on the event/venue. I have been the sole woman at gay bars or with groups of sci fi geeks and artists and had a great time. I have also been the only woman with a bunch of drunk hetero guys getting rowdy and/or horny and I was extremely uncomfortable and got out of there QUICK.

Actually, I knew of some women that preferred gay bars over regular bars, just so they wouldn't have straight guys hit on them (straight women), I think that's going a bit overboard though. I just think there's something a little off about a straight woman who would rather be an environment full of gay men just to avoid straight men.
EasyHeart Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 I think it mostly depends on your attitude toward meeting people of the opposite gender. If you're single and looking, why would you NOT want to go? I can understand if you're in a serious relationship and it's annoying to have people constantly asking you out when you're not available/interested, but otherwise I would think it would be awesome. One think I find annoying/puzzling about women is when they complain about never being able to meet anyone, so I ask them what they typically do to try and meet people. Then they say, "Oh, I hang out in gay bars" or "I go out with a group of my girlfriends" or "I like to go shopping". Hint to women: if you want to meet men, go someplace (1) with a lot of me (2) by yourself. Breaking into a herd of women is always hard. But no solo woman is ever alone for very long in a large group of men. We are always looking for solo women!
LisaLee Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 FOr your viewing pleasure Lisa My fav. episodes because it involves girl gamers. lol That was pretty awesome. I passed it on to a role playing girlfriend of mine (who is 44 years old, btw ). For some reason this thread turned my inner geek on, and now I have this crazy urge to play Bioshock and harvest some Little Sisters. Fun times.
Fire Salamander Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Of course, just look at the sports reporter Inez Sainz. This whore dresses like one then goes into a the locker room full of naked football players. She was attempting to interview Mark Sanchez of the New York Jets. That's like asking a guy if he wouldn't be attracted to a room full of make up girls at a Lancome convention. Men are attracted to femininity / estrogen. Women are attracted to masculinity / testosterone. Yes, these two examples are on the extreme end of the spectrum. However this just shows reality beyond a reasonable doubt. As for this whore she got what she wanted. More attention and a move to further advance her career.
Stung Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Actually, I knew of some women that preferred gay bars over regular bars, just so they wouldn't have straight guys hit on them (straight women), I think that's going a bit overboard though. I just think there's something a little off about a straight woman who would rather be an environment full of gay men just to avoid straight men. Why a little off? Sometimes straight drunk guys can get really persistent and/or aggressive in hitting on women in bars, and the woman often can't really relax and just let her guard down. I lived near a gay bar for a few years and went there often when I wasn't in the mood to get hit on but I was in the mood to have a couple of drinks, unwind and hang out casually with people. It's just a way to get to be social and friendly without having to second-guess others' motivations or worry that if you have one too many someone is going to try to take advantage of it. I made some very good friends in those days, and just went out to lunch with one of them yesterday, ten years after moving far away from that bar. Now, if I somehow tried to exclude straight men from all aspects of my life BUT one or two that would be a definite red flag, but it's not like hanging out in a gay bar a couple times a month somehow erases all your straight male friends, family members, exes and coworkers. Obviously if I had been looking for and trying to meet single men and spending all my time in gay bars wondering why I wasn't getting approached romantically I would have needed my head examined. Personally though I have been lucky enough to never have serious trouble meeting men, and I never preferred to meet my romantic/sexual interests in bars (though I admit it happened a couple of times). Usually I preferred to meet prospective dates through classes or work/volunteer work or social networking, etc.
Author irc333 Posted September 20, 2010 Author Posted September 20, 2010 Well, the whole idea of going out of your way to avoid men....not sure why some women do this.
