Serenitynow Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I'm being totally serious, and I would like to get serious answers. If you browse through dating site pics, you will find probably over 80% of the women have either taken a pic of themselves in the bathroom mirror, or in the driver seat of their car. What is the attraction with this ? I would think that if you were trying to look your best, you'd take some time to make sure you got a good pic. At least with an actual camera and not a phone. Do you just hop in your car, look in the mirror and think "Ooo I look good today, let me take a pic" ? - - Dont tell me what guys do on the sites, go make your own thread about it .
Enchanted Girl Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I think the reason this happens is because those are the easiest pics to take. People seem to like to make videos of their friends and take photos during boring car trips and then send them to their friends to see later. Some of those must turn out good so they post them online. And if you want to take a picture of yourself without involving anyone else, the only way to do that is in the mirror. I hate having to ask people to take my picture so I can sympathize.
Author Serenitynow Posted July 29, 2010 Author Posted July 29, 2010 And if you want to take a picture of yourself without involving anyone else, the only way to do that is in the mirror. I hate having to ask people to take my picture so I can sympathize. There are tons of cameras out there with auto photo options on them. And most of these women talk about doing stuff with their friends all the time, so I dont buy that "having to ask someone" line. I think a lot of them probably havent told anyone they are on the site, thus the need for the mirror pic. What about their kids taking a pic ? I think there are plenty of options besides the lame mirror pics.

I have to say, this is weird to me too. I can't imagine the lighting/angles/pore closeups are all that flattering. Maybe people think they're edgy action shots. Out of curiosity, do you ever click through to those women's profiles? Or is this an automatic 10-point deduction?

kiss_andmakeup Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Why do you care? I'm not trying to be snippy; I'm honestly curious. You seem (from your threads) to dwell on small, inconsequential discrepancies that occur between men and women (i.e. "women can get away with ______ but if a guy does it it's not okay!"). Why the fascination with things like this? I've never taken a picture of myself in a mirror or in a car, so I can't really answer your question, but I'd venture a guess that your last post hit the nail on the head; they were having a good hair day or thought they looked nice or whatever, and decided to snap a picture.
flying Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I like those pictures! Most of them look really hot. How much of that is because they tend to be a little "looking-down-the-blouse"? Seriously, though, people probably think those kinds of shots are good conversation-starters in one way or another.

Agree with this. Also, there's no need to snap mirror pics to get one of yourself if you know how to angle a camera correctly. I have a bunch of pictures of myself that I've taken on my own and none of them are in a mirror. I've always found mirror pics to be rather tacky.
Author Serenitynow Posted July 29, 2010 Author Posted July 29, 2010 Because its so widely done by so many women. I am very analytical with understanding small, inconsequential discrepancies I think I missed my calling in the Social Psychology field.
zengirl Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Supposedly, according to OKCupid's fun blog, those pictures are effective (they did a sampling of the non-cleavage ones) for women. Not as effective as "Doing something interesting" in terms of longer message chains. I don't have any, as I've never taken one. I'm not a fan of taking pictures, but luckily, my friends are. I just pick the ones where I'm not rolling my eyes at them for forcing me to pose or blurry or looking like crap and toss them up there.
Author Serenitynow Posted July 29, 2010 Author Posted July 29, 2010 Out of curiosity, do you ever click through to those women's profiles? Or is this an automatic 10-point deduction? if I bypassed those profiles, it would take about 20 secs to view the rest of the site.
Bogo123 Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 You forgot about the pouty lip pose...or the girl that has 10 face pics that look practically identical
MisUnderstanding Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Because a woman would try to look her best before taking that mirror picture. Makeup, cute clothes, perfectly done hair, that doesn't just happen out on the street or partys, it gets messy, or eyes closed or whatever else. With the mirror a woman can make the pose she wants, the face she wants and the shot she wants. So really, if a woman looks like crap in a mirror shot, she looks worse in real life And then there are women who have nobody to take their picture, and those probably lie about their busy life because they have none.
Author Serenitynow Posted July 29, 2010 Author Posted July 29, 2010 You forgot about the pouty lip pose...or the girl that has 10 face pics that look practically identical The 10 face pic profile is something I really scratch my head on. We arent exaggerating either, there are many women that do that.
Author Serenitynow Posted July 29, 2010 Author Posted July 29, 2010 Because a woman would try to look her best before taking that mirror picture That makes pretty good sense. They might look great in person, but the quality of the pic still looks pretty bad. So it kind of washes away the effort.
MisUnderstanding Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 That makes pretty good sense. They might look great in person, but the quality of the pic still looks pretty bad. So it kind of washes away the effort. I have to disagree. Good camera, good light, flash turned off, tasteful cropping, and the picture can be amazing.

Seriously, though, people probably think those kinds of shots are good conversation-starters in one way or another. I like to think it's just the same view you would get if you were taller. They work for me because it seems real.

"CAN BE" is right in theory, but in reality, most of them look bad and I have way too much experience in looking at them

Author Serenitynow Posted July 29, 2010 Author Posted July 29, 2010 Grr, now I feel like finding good ones! On the other hand... I doubt those women would appreciate being advertised here lol yeah and I'm not going to post the bad ones, we both know each exists though
SadandConfusedWA Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I have never taken a mirror pic, maybe I should start?
phineas Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Women that focus on their clevage in a profile pic make it seem like all they can bring to the table is thier amazing rack & don't realy interest me. The birds eye view photo's make me think their trying to hide their gigantic ass.
alexlakeman Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Who cares? If they look good and there's a full body shot, fine. If they take pics in d mirro, it's bad if they take pics at a photo studio, it's bad If they take pics with a dog, it's bad Lol, too much micro analyzing.

If they were at a bar, I'd be checking out the cleavage / dimensions of the boobs anyway, as most men do lol
