That being said, I think there's a reason why his sister has an attraction for this guy.

That's all I'll say.

Why is that all you'll say? I don't even know what that's supposed to mean.

I just think that in the interest of your privacy that's all I should say.

You can view online the Frontline special covering the Holocaust: "Memory of the Camps". They used a real film from 1945, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It was designed to shock the Germans into realizing what they allowed to happen. It's riveting. To be honest, while watching it, I had a very hard time believing that could happen. If you see the scenes of what the camps were like, it was so terrible that I can't understand how the guards could stand to be there. They must have been very twisted. That's where the disbelief creeps in. It's one thing to torture and kill people like they did. It's something else to immerse yourself in the hell of those camps and continue to function.

Maybe it would be amusing to watch this show with that guy and see how he reacts. In sort of a human behavior study kind of way.

I've never met anyone that doesn't believe the Holocaust really happened. That's rather freaky to me. Does he believe there was a moon landing? That Elvis's death was a hoax and he simply tired of the fame?

I do know a lot of people who believe that Courtney Love killed Kurt Cobain, and I know many racially prejudiced people, too. I don't know any White Supremacists or members of the KKK, though. The Jewish population in my area is very small. I can't honestly remember meeting one Jew in S. Louisiana.

I never thought about if this would be a deal breaker for me before, but it would. I allow people to have pretty much whatever thoughts they choose to have as long as their actions aren't bothersome to me. I don't think I could change their thoughts/beliefs, but I wouldn't date someone whose actions were radical or extremist.

I can't imagine dating someone who chose to disbelieve a whole era of factual history. Even if his actions are NOT radical.

I also don't get very involved with my sister's choices for partners and she doesn't get involved with mine either. Then again, we live very far apart from one another so that makes it pretty easy.

I guess if it's bothering her, your sister has to decide for herself if it's a deal breaker for HER.

I'm inclined to belive that they think it happened, but just get off on being a**holes. I think it's that simple.

In many countries in Europe you can be jailed for Holocaust denial. It is an interesting contrast to US free speech.

Some excellent autobiographies from camp survivors who saw the exterminations first hand:

Survival in Auschwitz by Primo Levi

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl

Night by Eli Wiesel

Canada has had 2 prominent holocaust deniers. One was a high school teacher who was teaching students that it never happened. He was eventually convicted but never jailed.

The other was a German citizen who was ordered to cease communicating his beliefs via the Internet, went to the US, was arrested and deported back to Canada. After 2 years in jail here, he was deported to Germany and convicted there.

So its not only in Europe where it is a crime.

And I am not Jewish but it would be a dealbreaker for me. I lost family in the war.

Seeing as there was so much less media in 1940-1945 than there is today, I think the 23 year old kid is applying today's filter to past events...at best. At mid-range, I'd say he's gullible and is buying into conspiracy-theories because that's "cool" among his friends, just like the guns. At worst, I'd say he's a f*cked-up idiot and probably somewhat boring and perhaps even dangerous.

Yes, this would be a deal-breaker for me. I couldn't have a rational discussion with someone who buys into conspiracy crap like that.

Well put. If this guy believes Jews created the Holocaust (for what...as some kind of long-term-planning PR exercise for Schindler's List?) then one wonders what other unpleasant nonsense might be bubbling around in his head.

The Holocaust is nothing to joke about. The moon "landing," however, makes me laugh every time.

Ha ha! Like he'll really have the balls to tell you! He'd only get suspended yet again if he does.

Why would he get suspended?

What he wrote may seem anti-semitic, though I don't necessarily know that it is without further clarification. For example, while I certainly blame radical Islamists for the violence in Israel, I also believe that there is a strong element of right-wing Zionism that aids and abets the crisis in the Palestinian territories - that opinion doesn't make me an anti-Semite. I would never say that Israelis "deserve" to be suicide bombed or put in concentration camps. Maybe that's what alpha is saying; if that's not what he's saying, well, I would find that regrettable, honestly.

And on topic, yeah, anyone who denies the Holocaust frankly needs their head examined. It's actually a crime in Germany to deny the Holocaust - you can be thrown in jail for it.

Okay I am big on conspiracy theories, yes I have doubts about the moon landing, I think nearly everyone does about JFK... hell I could even get on board with Hitler didn't kill himself but Stalin had him captured and tortured for years (I merely like the sound of that one - sorry but he deserved it) but I get so defensive if I EVER hear of anyone spouting such crap. Historically they are incorrect. Concentration camps, testimonies from not only Jews, the soldiers who liberated the camps. German citizens and even Nazi soldiers who witnessed or were a part of the murders. Read the diary of Anne Frank and tell me the Holocaust didn't happen. What an idiot. I would dump him in a heartbeat.

So my sister has been seeing this 23 year old kid who goes to the university where she takes graduate classes. She seems quite taken with him and says he's really intelligent and interesting and she also finds him very attractive, but he has one major flaw...he thinks the Holocaust was a conspiracy of the Zionist controlled media. He happens to have been born in France and I know how anti-semitic a lot of those Frenchies are, so maybe she should cut him some slack, I don't know. She's really bothered by it though.

Would this be a dealbreaker for you?

I think people, especially young people, should be given a chance to have their mind changed on stuff like this. I'd question why they believe that, ask them to back it up with some evidence, then provide the information that contradicts the conspiracy theory. A visit to the death camp museums in the region if necessary. If they still stick to the conspiracy theory then they are basically a fruitcake and I'd never want to be involved with a loony tune like that.

The fact that he is from France should be deal breaker enough for her.

What's this supposed to mean?

I can't believe someone from mainland europe can deny the holocaust.

Sure he is young, but surely some of his family will remember back to WWII times? France was occupied by the Germans and French Jews were deported to concentration camps.

I could understand someone from outside Europe having difficulty believing in it in the late forties and fifties before all the media and survivors stories were well publicized. But ignorance is impossible these days. Or is it?

Ignorance should not be condoned!!

I have met an Auschwitz survivor, and talked about the Holocaust, I have been to the Imperial War Museums Holocaust exhibits, I have been to Auschwitz. And there were people there CELEBRATING the Holocaust. Not openly, but they were there.

Many fascist groups applaud it, and Auschwitz is a kind of Mecca-like pilgrimage to them.many holocaust deniers also share views with these groups.

The camp survivor I met is worried that these people (and they are out there in there thousands) are helping to perpetuate fascist, anti-semitic, racist extremist views in todays society.

Denying the Holocaust is an insult to society, and a dangerous attitude that can only breed hate and intolerance.

B4R- I think that NJ is right, and your sisters BF has probably just taken a class on this and is being a little naieve and underinformed, but if he is this quick to jump on a bandwagon, it doesn't bode well for the future.

Without a doubt. I don't care if the woman was brilliant, beautiful and fu#cked like a porn star, I could never be in a relationship with an anti-semite. Never.

And I'm not even Jewish. I'm a good old fashioned WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant).

So true. And the creepy feelings bigotry-discovery engenders are very uncomfortable. It's like, "Oh my God, I've slept with that person!? Yikes!!!"

Yes, it would be a deal breaker. I'm not Jewish, I've never met a holocaust survivor, I don't think I've even met a Jew. I've never visited any of the concentration camps, I've never read a book about the holocaust or indeed a book about either the Great War or the second World War.

There is no justifiable reason for genocide.

My sister decided to break it off completely with this guy. Apparently he was calling blacks subhumans and saying he didn't like Jews, so your intincts were right.

Hmmm....red flags all around. I once dated a guy who was good-looking, charming, assertive and had hobbies. One day he showed me his hobby of collecting military memorabilia of....nazi apparel.

I walked out the door and never took another call from him again.

You know, it is odd that he is French and he believes that way, considering the U.S. troops saved France's a**.

that said, I love France. Paris is amazing, and I saw the Normandy coast last summer, and the WWII museum there, and the towns are just so amazing. The American WWII cemetary in Coleville is really moving, also. I highly recommend going.

That is precisely why I like to date a month or so, to really get to KNOW the person before getting naked.
