SearchingForAnswers24 Posted 12 hours ago Posted 12 hours ago I tried posting on Reddit but didn’t get meaningful responses with many complaining about the length. But with such a complicated relationship it’s hard to make it shorter. Now if length is an issue I can try to reduce it and repost it. TL;DR I (30M) developed deep romantic feelings for a close friend from India (31F) after she unexpectedly initiated an incredibly intense friendship that lasted nearly two years. We exchanged over 20,000 messages, frequently stayed up talking until early morning, spent considerable time together, and shared moments that felt far more intimate than a typical friendship. Her behavior led me to believe she had romantic feelings for me, something even our friends and coworkers suspected. However, when I confessed my love, she insisted we had only ever been friends. Shortly afterward, she traveled to India, entered an arranged marriage, and eventually became pregnant. Our friendship ended, leaving me heartbroken and struggling to understand whether her feelings had ever been romantic. Months after we stopped speaking, a photograph of us together unexpectedly appeared as her WhatsApp profile picture. I initially thought she had deliberately selected it, but later discovered WhatsApp may have been displaying a photograph saved in my iPhone Contacts. Conflicting results from my experiments have left me uncertain. Meanwhile, she continued viewing my social media updates for months before suddenly unfollowing me on Instagram. Around the same time, her husband unexpectedly viewed my Instagram stories, despite us having no connection. I’m struggling to understand whether she ever had romantic feelings for me, why she initiated such an intense friendship, whether her subsequent behavior means anything, and why she suddenly distanced herself after everything we shared. Most importantly, how do I let go of the hope that she’ll someday return and finally move forward when I still love her so deeply? ——————————————————————————— Introduction Hi everyone! I’m looking for outside perspectives on a complicated relationship, friendship, or situationship, not sure what to call it, I’ve experienced over the past couple of years. I could honestly write a book about everything that happened between us. There are countless memories, conversations, and interactions that I could discuss, but I’ll try to focus on the details that seem most relevant. I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have experienced something similar, especially those familiar with South Indian culture, arranged marriages, and relationships complicated by cultural or family expectations. I’m American (30M), and I met a woman from India (31F) through work. We were 27 and 28 at the time, respectively. I was her manager, and I maintained professional boundaries and generally didn’t socialize with employees outside work. Everyone knew this, including her. For several months, our relationship was strictly professional. However, everything changed almost overnight when she learned I was single. What followed was an incredibly close friendship that eventually led me to fall deeply in love with her. She ultimately rejected me and married someone else, but the way our relationship developed, her behavior throughout it, and the circumstances surrounding its ending have left me with questions I still struggle to answer. How Our Friendship Began Several months after I hired her, she learned that I was single. Her immediate reaction was something along the lines of, “That’s good to know.” Shortly afterward, she began constantly texting me, seeking my attention, and wanting to spend time together outside work, and saying how much she missed me if we didn’t see each other for like a day. This all happened within weeks of us getting close. This was entirely unexpected. I hadn’t been pursuing her romantically, nor had I expressed any romantic interest in her. She was the one who initiated our friendship outside work, and the intensity of that friendship developed remarkably quickly. Within weeks, we were texting constantly, frequently staying awake talking until 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning. We shared personal details about our lives, discussed virtually everything imaginable, and spent considerable time together. If we went more than a day without seeing each other, she would sometimes text me about how much she missed me. We became practically inseparable. Over the following two years, we exchanged more than 20,000 messages. Our conversations weren’t limited to casual subjects. We discussed our families, our futures, personal struggles, relationships, and countless other things. She even asked me one time if I would marry outside my religion. We also frequently checked on each other throughout the day. She would text me good morning, ask how my day was going, and sometimes worry if I didn’t respond quickly enough. If I took too long to reply, she occasionally asked whether I was upset with her. I sometimes did the same. Looking back, the level of emotional attachment between us felt extraordinary. I understand that men and women can develop close platonic friendships. However, I’ve never experienced a friendship that developed this quickly or involved this level of emotional intimacy. And what makes it particularly confusing is that I didn’t develop romantic feelings for her until after she initiated this incredibly intense connection. Her Behavior That Made Me Believe She Had Romantic Feelings There were numerous occasions when her behavior seemed to suggest something beyond friendship. One of our first outings alone involved driving more than an hour away to go stargazing around midnight. It was entirely her idea. We barely knew each other outside work at that point, yet she wanted to spend the middle of the night with me in a secluded setting. To me, it felt incredibly intimate, particularly considering how recently our friendship had begun. There were also the affectionate gestures that, in my opinion, went beyond friendship. Sometimes she would look directly into my eyes in a way I’ve never experienced with anyone else. I know this is subjective, but the way she looked at me genuinely made me feel as though she was infatuated with me. There were moments when we would simply look into each other’s eyes, and it felt as though everything around us disappeared. No one has ever looked at me quite the way she did. She also sometimes appeared jealous when I gave other Indian women attention. I can’t know whether that jealousy was romantic, but it certainly contributed to my interpretation of our relationship. And these weren’t isolated incidents. This behavior continued throughout much of our friendship. Some of Our Most Meaningful Memories There are countless memories I could share, but several stand out. For my birthday in 2025, she spent hours preparing a special dinner for me, cooking until approximately 3:00 in the morning. I found that incredibly thoughtful. On another occasion, she accompanied me on an airport trip around 3:00 in the morning, despite having no particular reason to go other than wanting to spend time together. She was not the one driving me, she rode along with the driver and then the drive took her back home. There were also little moments that felt especially affectionate, such as her feeding me french fries while I was driving every time I complimented her. For her graduation in December 2025, she specifically wanted me to wear a suit that she helped me pick out. She also wanted to see me before other people, and we spent time together late into the night. We frequently went out together, made plans for future adventures, and talked about trips we hoped to take. Our conversations often involved affectionate emojis, including hearts and heart-eyes. Individually, I realize these gestures could be interpreted as friendly. But when I consider all of them together, alongside the intensity of our communication and how quickly our relationship developed, I struggle to believe there was never any romantic attraction on her side. Other People Noticed Our Chemistry It wasn’t just me who thought something might be happening. Friends and coworkers frequently questioned whether we were romantically involved. Some assumed we were dating. Others noticed how much time we spent together and how attached we seemed to be. What I find particularly frustrating is that after she eventually rejected me, some of those same people began suggesting that perhaps I had imagined the romantic implications. But these were people who had independently questioned our relationship before I ever confessed my feelings. And they only witnessed how we interacted around other people. When we were alone, our interactions often felt considerably more intimate. I recognize that outside observers can misinterpret close friendships, just as someone who is emotionally involved can. Nevertheless, their observations contributed to my belief that our connection might be mutual. Our Discussions About a Potential Relationship Early in our friendship, we discussed the possibility of pursuing a romantic relationship. She wasn’t ready. I knew she came from a relatively conservative Indian background and intended to have an arranged marriage. I also understood that she eventually wanted to return to India. However, I hoped our relationship might develop into something that would change those plans. Something else made me believe she might have been interested. Before we began socializing outside work, she told a mutual coworker that if I was interested in her, I should make the first move and that we would “go from there.” At that point, I wasn’t romantically interested in her. But combined with her subsequent behavior, that comment made me believe she was at least open to the possibility of a relationship. So I eventually pursued one. I genuinely don’t believe I would have developed such strong romantic feelings or pursued a relationship if she hadn’t initiated our friendship and behaved in ways that seemed to encourage something more. That is one of the most difficult parts of this experience for me to understand. Why initiate such an intense connection with someone, discuss the possibility of a relationship, and behave in ways that could reasonably be interpreted as romantic if you only ever wanted friendship? Of course, it’s possible she simply valued our friendship differently than I did. But I still struggle to reconcile that explanation with everything that happened. When Everything Suddenly Changed Those two years were probably the happiest of my life. I had never experienced anything quite like our connection. But toward the end of our friendship, something changed. And it happened almost overnight. She went from texting me good morning almost every day, checking on me throughout the day, and worrying when I didn’t respond quickly enough to someone who rarely initiated conversations. She began leaving my messages unanswered and on read for hours. Sometimes she wouldn’t respond for an entire day or longer. When I asked what was happening, she generally explained that she was busy. I understood that people have responsibilities and can’t always respond immediately. But this was such a dramatic departure from her previous behavior that I knew something had changed. It wasn’t a gradual reduction in communication. It felt almost as though someone had flipped a switch. Interestingly, that was similar to how our friendship began: suddenly and unexpectedly. At the time, I wondered whether she knew something was coming that would affect our relationship. I had no evidence of that, but the abrupt change concerned me. Eventually, I decided I needed to tell her how I felt. My Confession and Her Rejection In January 2026, after nearly two years of countless memories and more than 20,000 messages, I confessed my love. I gave her flowers and gifts and explained how deeply I had fallen for her. I genuinely believed there was a strong possibility she felt the same way. Instead, she rejected me. She insisted that she had only ever wanted to be friends. I was devastated. What made the situation particularly confusing was that she also explained that she didn’t want to live in the United States permanently. She intended to return to India and eventually marry there. She even suggested that she might have considered a relationship with me if she had planned to remain in America. That statement has always stayed with me. If she had absolutely no romantic interest in me, why suggest that our circumstances might have made a difference? Perhaps she was simply trying to soften the rejection. Perhaps she genuinely meant that she could have considered dating me under different circumstances. Or perhaps there were feelings she wasn’t comfortable acknowledging. I don’t know. What I do know is that she appeared surprised when I explained how strongly I believed she would say yes. That surprised me in return. Considering how our friendship began and everything we experienced together, I struggled to understand how she could be surprised that I interpreted our relationship romantically. She maintained that she had only ever viewed me as a friend. I understand that I have to take her answer seriously, even if I don’t fully understand it. But emotionally, reconciling that answer with our history has been incredibly difficult. Her Arranged Marriage Not long after my confession, she traveled to India. Within approximately a month, she became engaged and married someone else. She later told me that she hadn’t known the marriage would happen until she arrived in India. However, the timing made me wonder whether she might have known more beforehand. During our final night together, when I confessed my love, she mentioned that her sister had a “surprise” waiting for her in India. At the time, that comment made me nervous. Looking back, I’ve wondered whether the surprise involved a potential marriage arrangement. Several Indian friends have expressed skepticism about how quickly everything happened, explaining that arranged marriages often involve discussions and preparations well in advance. However, I recognize that arranged marriages vary considerably between families and individuals. I don’t know what discussions took place in her particular situation. It’s entirely possible that everything genuinely happened as quickly as she described. Still, I sometimes wonder whether her sudden emotional withdrawal before leaving for India was connected to her upcoming marriage. Could she have been distancing herself because she knew our relationship couldn’t continue in the same way once she married? Or was she simply preparing for a major life transition? I may never know. What makes everything even more painful is that she is now pregnant. She remains in the United States for the time being, although she previously mentioned wanting to return to India eventually. Knowing that she is building a life and family with someone else has made accepting the situation considerably harder. The End of Our Friendship After she married, we initially attempted to remain friends. However, things were no longer the same. I still loved her, and maintaining our friendship while knowing she was married to someone else was emotionally painful. Eventually, following disagreements about our relationship and how we should interact going forward, she suggested ending the friendship. She explained that continuing it would cause pain for both of us. That statement has stayed with me. I’ve sometimes wondered what she meant by saying it would hurt both of us, particularly because she had consistently maintained that her feelings for me were platonic. But I also recognize that losing a close friendship can be painful without romantic feelings being involved. We ultimately stopped speaking. My subsequent attempts to reconnect went unanswered. Our last direct communication was several months ago. It is difficult to comprehend how someone who had been such an important part of my everyday life could suddenly become a stranger. Only a few months earlier, we had been talking constantly, making plans, sharing personal experiences, and enjoying each other’s company. Then everything ended. Her Social Media Behavior After Our Friendship Ended This is where things became even more confusing for me. Although we stopped speaking, she continued following me on Instagram and viewing my Instagram stories and WhatsApp Status updates for months. Sometimes she viewed my stories late at night. This continued long after our friendship ended. I realize that viewing someone’s social media updates doesn’t necessarily indicate romantic interest. People often remain curious about former friends or people who were once important to them. Nevertheless, I found it difficult not to wonder whether she still missed me. The WhatsApp Profile Picture Several months after we stopped speaking, something happened that initially gave me hope. Her WhatsApp profile picture appeared to change from a photograph of herself to one featuring just the two of us. This was particularly surprising because, throughout the years I’d known her, I had never seen her use a profile picture featuring another person. Her other social media profile pictures generally featured her alone. During our friendship, she had also sometimes been reluctant to share photographs of us together because she worried people might misunderstand our relationship. So seeing what appeared to be a photograph of us together as her WhatsApp profile picture was unexpected. At first, I wondered whether she had deliberately selected it because she missed me or still felt emotionally attached. After all, why would someone who had rejected me, married someone else, and ended our friendship choose a photograph featuring the two of us? However, I subsequently discovered a possible technical explanation. Apparently, WhatsApp can sometimes display a photograph saved in your phone’s contacts when someone’s actual WhatsApp profile picture isn’t visible. I had saved that exact photograph of us together in my iPhone Contacts months earlier. When I experimented by changing or removing her contact photograph, the picture displayed in WhatsApp changed accordingly. When I removed the photograph entirely, WhatsApp displayed a default avatar. I reproduced similar behavior with another contact. This suggested that WhatsApp might simply have been displaying my locally saved photograph rather than one she had selected herself. But there was another complication. When I first noticed the photograph appearing on WhatsApp, I had performed a similar experiment. At that time, I unsynced her contact from WhatsApp and deleted the contact from my iPhone. The photograph of us together remained visible. When I repeated the experiment more recently, however, the photograph disappeared. This inconsistency left me wondering whether she might originally have selected the photograph herself but subsequently changed her privacy settings or removed me from her contacts. Alternatively, WhatsApp may simply have retained a cached image during my original experiment. But if that’s true then why didn’t it change for months after I originally made that her contact photo. I recognize that neither explanation is proven. And because my later experiments demonstrated that WhatsApp could display my locally saved photograph, I understand that the picture alone isn’t reliable evidence of her feelings. Nevertheless, the timing initially gave me hope, and discovering the technical explanation was emotionally difficult. Changes to Her WhatsApp Activity Another thing I noticed was that she continued viewing my WhatsApp Status updates even after the photograph initially appeared. For some time, I could also still see her online status. However, more recently, I stopped being able to see when she was online. And when I removed her contact photograph from my iPhone, the photograph also disappeared from WhatsApp. I suspect she may have changed her privacy settings or removed me from her contacts. But I can’t confirm that. I understand that these changes could have ordinary explanations unrelated to me. Still, given everything that happened between us, I found myself searching for meaning in them. Instagram: Her Sudden Decision to Unfollow Me More recently, she was still regularly viewing my Instagram stories. Sometimes she viewed them late at night. Then, seemingly without warning, she unfollowed me. She didn’t block me. I can still view her profile, and I continue to follow her. I found the decision surprising because she had continued following me for months after our friendship ended. If she no longer wanted to see my updates, she could simply have stopped viewing them. Instead, she deliberately unfollowed me. Around the same time, one of her close friends also unfollowed me. I didn’t know him particularly well, which made the timing seem unusual. Her Husband Viewed My Instagram Stories Something else happened around the same time. Her husband’s Instagram account unexpectedly appeared among the viewers of my stories. He and I don’t follow each other. Until that moment, I didn’t even know he had an Instagram account. I have no relationship or direct connection with him. Afterward, neither he nor Mamatha appeared among my Instagram story viewers again. She also stopped appearing among the viewers of my WhatsApp Status updates. I don’t know whether these events were connected. Perhaps he discovered my account independently. Perhaps they discussed our previous friendship. Or perhaps the timing was entirely coincidental. I recognize that I have no way of knowing. But considering how closely these events occurred, I found the sequence difficult to ignore. What confuses me most is that she continued observing my life through social media for months after our friendship ended, only to suddenly distance herself further. I sometimes wonder whether she finally decided she needed to close that chapter of her life completely. Perhaps she simply wanted to focus on her marriage and family. Whatever the explanation, the sudden change has been painful. Where I Am Emotionally Today Many months later, I’m still struggling. Some days, I barely have the motivation to get out of bed. I never imagined that losing someone I was never officially in a romantic relationship with could hurt this much. But I loved so her. I still do. For nearly two years, she was one of the most important people in my life. We shared countless memories, talked about everything, and seemed to understand each other in ways I’d never experienced before. I knew so many little things about her. And she knew so many little things about me. What made her happy. What upset her. What she enjoyed. What she worried about. i knew it all. I would have dropped anything to help her. I genuinely believed we had the foundation for an incredible relationship. Perhaps the hardest part is that I still sometimes imagine she’ll eventually realize how happy we were together and come back. Part of me wonders whether she might someday become unhappy in her marriage and reconsider the life she chose. I recognize that I have no evidence she’s unhappy. And I know that she’s married, pregnant, and building a life with someone else. But part of me wants to find a way to bring her back to me. Emotionally, I haven’t completely let go of the possibility that our paths could cross again under different circumstances. I still struggle with the feeling that we were made for each other. The way our friendship developed felt almost like something out of a love story. Two people from completely different countries and cultural backgrounds unexpectedly becoming incredibly close. Neither of us seemingly looking for that connection when it began. And then, at least from my perspective, developing a bond unlike anything I’d experienced before. She was my first love. I’ve never loved anyone the way I loved her. And although I understand that my feelings don’t necessarily mean she experienced our relationship the same way, it’s incredibly difficult to accept that something so meaningful to me might have been entirely platonic to her. I’m trying to move forward. I’ve explored dating apps, considered potential relationships with other women, and tried to focus on building a future that doesn’t involve her. But the unanswered questions keep pulling me back. I can’t stop checking her socials to see if there are any updates. I think what hurts most isn’t simply that she rejected me. It’s that I never fully understood what our relationship meant to her. And now, after everything we shared, we no longer speak. I honestly think she loved me too and is not telling me the full truth. My Questions 1. Based on everything I’ve described, is it unreasonable to believe she may have developed romantic feelings for me at some point, even though she explicitly denied them? I’m particularly interested in how others interpret the beginning of our friendship. She initiated our connection shortly after learning I was single, pursued my attention, wanted to spend considerable time alone with me, suggested intimate outings, and displayed behavior that I interpreted as affectionate and sometimes jealous. Our friendship also developed with extraordinary speed. Even people around us questioned whether we were romantically involved. Could these behaviors reasonably suggest romantic attraction? Or am I interpreting an unusually close friendship through the lens of my own feelings? 2. If she did have romantic feelings, why might she have denied them, even when I confessed my love? Could cultural expectations, family obligations, her intention to return to India, or her plans for an arranged marriage have influenced her decision? She had no relationship experience, so I sometimes wonder whether she was uncertain about her own feelings. Perhaps she never expected to become so emotionally close to an American man. Or perhaps she genuinely never experienced romantic feelings toward me. I’d particularly appreciate perspectives from people familiar with South Indian cultural expectations and arranged marriages. 3. How should I interpret her behavior after our friendship ended? She continued viewing my social media updates for months. A photograph of us together appeared on WhatsApp, although I’ve since discovered a possible technical explanation. She then suddenly unfollowed me on Instagram, and around the same time, her husband unexpectedly viewed my stories. Do these events suggest anything meaningful, or am I searching for connections that may not exist? I’m especially interested in understanding why someone might continue following a former close friend’s life for months before abruptly distancing themselves. 4. Has anyone experienced something similar involving cultural differences, an arranged marriage, or a close friendship that appeared romantic but never became an official relationship? I’d be interested in hearing how others interpreted their experiences afterward. Did you eventually learn whether the other person had romantic feelings? Did you ever receive an explanation? Or did you have to accept that some questions would remain unanswered? 5. How do I let go of the hope that she’ll return and finally move forward? I understand that she’s married and building a life with someone else. I know I need to continue living my own life. But the unanswered questions make it difficult. I’m trying to meet other women and remain open to finding love again. At the same time, part of me still hopes that someday, under circumstances neither of us can predict, we might find our way back to each other. I know that possibility isn’t something I can build my future around. But how do you stop hoping for something when your feelings haven’t disappeared? Closing Thoughts I’d especially appreciate perspectives from people familiar with South Indian arranged marriages and the cultural expectations surrounding them, although I’m interested in everyone’s opinions. I also want to emphasize that I’m not asking anyone to tell me what I want to hear. I’m genuinely interested in understanding how other people interpret this situation, including explanations that differ from my own. I know it’s possible that she valued our friendship deeply without ever experiencing romantic feelings. I also know that even if she once had feelings for me, that wouldn’t necessarily mean she wants a relationship with me now. What I’m struggling with is reconciling the extraordinary closeness we shared with how abruptly everything ended. For almost two years, she was one of the most important people in my life. Now we’re strangers. And although I recognize that I may never know exactly what she felt, I still find myself searching for answers. And I also know very few people end up spending the rest of their lives with their first loves but I can’t help but hold out hope that we will end up together despite her circumstances. Crazier things have happened. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this. I know it’s long, but there is so much more I could say about our friendship and everything we experienced together. I genuinely appreciate any thoughtful feedback. Quote
basil67 Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago Thanks for the TL/DR None of us can tell you her motivations. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do except grieve what you had with a view to leaving it behind. You're still quite young enough to find new love Quote
Gebidozo Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago One obvious point is that you shouldn’t entertain the thoughts of a serious romantic relationship with someone who is fine with arranged marriages. Some people break out of their conservative societies while others don’t. Anyone who can at any time leave you because their parents or other patriarchal authority figures decide that you aren’t a suitable match is not someone to engage in a romantic relationship with. Another obvious issue is that you shouldn’t hope for a romantic relationship with a woman who’s been your platonic friend for two years. I admit I skipped over parts of your initial message, but I assumed you didn’t have sex with that woman. Not initiating a sexual relationship within such a long period of time automatically puts you in the “friendzone” even if the woman in question had romantic feelings for you at some point. Any woman I know would assume that you simply weren’t interested romantically. Quote
