Professorfinesse Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago I’m30M, my girlfriend is 30F, and we’ve been dating for around five months. We’re long distance, different states. We see each other a couple times a month. We’ve met each other’s families, stay over at each other’s family homes. She went through a pretty traumatic prior relationship where she was pressured or coerced into a marriage, and she left almost immediately, and she’s been in therapy since. Early on, she was actually moving things along faster than I was expecting. Talking about marriage, timelines, things like that. Then she started pumping the brakes, saying that she wasn’t in the right headspace and that she wanted to slow things down. She said she wanted to travel, do hobbies, focus on her career, basically how to enjoy her own life again. She said she wanted to love herself again. She said that she didn’t necessarily want to break up, but that she wanted to pause the progression. So, we landed on a middle ground. Checking in daily and seeing each other monthly, less pressure. Since then, I feel a little in limbo. She still talks to me, we still have affectionate moments, and she still checks in about my family. But her overall initiation and affection feel lower. She also expressed that she doesn’t want to feel pressure about sex when we see each other, which matters to me. I don’t want her to ever feel obligated, but it also made me wonder if her attraction or feelings had changed. I’m trying to respect the space she asked for without disappearing completely. My biggest problem is that I honestly don’t know how to read this. Is she trying to heal and rediscover herself while still wanting us? Is she slowly checking out, but doesn’t want to end it abruptly? Is she keeping me around while deciding whether she wants to be single? I don’t have any proof that there’s someone else, but something that happened tonight triggered that fear. She went to the gym and her location stayed there two hours after it closed. Her phone was charging. It could be anything, talking to friends, decompressing. But my anxious brain went to, is she sitting in a car with another guy? I know location doesn’t prove anything, but It showed me how on edge and uncertain I am. The hardest part is if she wants to be single or explore other people, why hasn’t she just told me? I’d rather hear, “I don’t want this,” than spend months decoding signals. For anyone who’s been in a similar situation, either asking for space or on the other side of it, is this what it feels like? Someone who is overwhelmed and trying to be independent or someone who is slowly checking out? If you asked for space after a traumatic relationship, what was going through your head? And if you were the other partner, what signs actually mattered in hindsight? So that version gives context, but also acknowledges where your anxiety might be filling gaps. Quote
ExpatInItaly Posted 13 hours ago Posted 13 hours ago When you only see each other a couple times a month and you have only been dating 5 months, and she needs even more space and even less intimacy, I am afraid to say this relationship is probably over. It's not as though you two spend much time together anyway, so this is not a good sign. 1 hour ago, Professorfinesse said: The hardest part is if she wants to be single or explore other people, why hasn’t she just told me? A lot of people are like this. They enjoy having someone around, so to speak, without the commitment and expecations that naturally come with a relationship. There is a good chance she will continue to enjoy your company until she meets the next person she does want to date. My guess is that she has not quite workd up the courage to end it completely, but that is what's probably coming. I'm sorry. Quote

Seriously, is what you want a relationship someone damaged enough to have been coerced into a marriage who now claims the need to learn to love themselves while backing off from intimacy/sex with you and potentially chatting with Chad from the gym? Every weekend in April, 2 weeks in April, traveled for a week in June and couple weekends, most of July and traveled again for a week in August and a week together outside of that. Quote
flitzanu Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago yup. sounds more like she wants to be your galpal rather than your girlfriend. as others said, you don't have to try and figure this out, you can just leave. it already sounds like you're not happy with how this is turning out, so you don't have to stick around. Even so, you are long-distance and don't spend as much time together as a typical couple. And this apparently isn't enough space for her, and she doesn't want to to have sex. None of this looks good.
