How Do I Not Let Other People Discourage Me Out Of My Goal?

Recommended Posts

I wrote the script, and it's been edited and ghost written by another script writer I know, who is also a professor at the film school I went too, who teaches script writing.

But I was thinking of getting other eyes to look at it, and possibly edit it as well.

As for marketing, I was hoping to find someone who is better at that area, since I do not know much about marketing it.

Read some business books on marketing but for heaven's sake copyright your script before it gets misappropriated. Too may people have already seen it. Protect your hard work. https://www.copyright.gov/ If you can afford a lawyer do that but be careful of the scammers.

You know, I was watching the Alpha movie the other day. It was pretty cheesy and even the cave he spent some time in looked fake. And that was a widely publicized movie and probably made a chunk of moola. Who knows why crap like that gets published and made into movies. I’m still trying to figure that one out.

That movie had a production budget of $51 million. It made $98 million.

The fact is, it costs gobs of money to produce feature films and get them to market. When talking about "low budget" films, those budgets are still in the millions. There are movies producded for under a million that make money - but they are extremely rare.

Yeah I'm trying to model my product after the movies that were made for only tens of thousands of dollars and were still successful.

I wish you well in achieving your goal. I always wanted to be a journalist, but my mother talked me out of it with her negative talk about the industry being too competitive and unstable. She convinced me to go into medical science where I've been working for the last 28years.

A couple of months ago I decided that I'd try my hand at writing by myself anyway, I wrote an article for a lifestyle magazine...it has just been published!! Guess what my mother said? "Well done, you've always been a very talented writer" Grrr!!! Why couldn't she have faith in me at the beginning of my working life??

Believe in yourself and go grab your dream.

Hey, congrats on that, mrs rubble! I love writing, too.

I've never been one to tell my son that he can do whatever he wants because I think that's an unrealistic statement, however, whenever I see that he's passionate about something, I tell him to go for it, that life is too short to waste it on doing things you don't have any passion about.

Same with you, ironpony - you need to pursue your passion and you seem to be doing that. I appreciate that you're being methodical about it and not diving in -- but after all this talking, please don't let anyone talk you out of doing what you love.

Thank you bathtub row!

My mother and I came to logger heads over my eldest son and his path of study at school, he wanted to pursue arts and digital media, she thought he should do more traditional science and economics. I told him he had my support to do what he was good at and passionate about.

He took my advice, my mother even got the school career advisor to talk to him, he backed up what my son wanted and my advice. He now has a degree in graphic design specialising in animation, he also has a great steady job in the industry and is gaining useful experience to go further in the future. Very proud!

Iron pony you will know in your heart whether you need to do this.

Best luck!

Okay thanks, but this is just it though, is that people are telling me I am diving in and not being methodical and that I cannot just skip all the way up to the rank of director on a feature.

Unless these people contributed to your start up funds, they should have no saying in your desires. I would listen if they themselves were struggling in the field as their experiences could come of value to you. Learn these distinctions.

And this world is full of people that play it safe. Those people get nowhere in life and generally not content with their life. Take a chance, risk it all, have fun doing it and write it off your list. How many speeches begin with, “I’d like to thank so and for turning me down and so and so for saying it could not be done.” ?

Okay thanks, I am just surprised at all the positivity on here compared to everyone else. Everyone says that if I take shortcuts like this, than I'm going to lose.

One person said I have more of a chance being hit by lightning than I do, actually making money off a movie with no guaranteed distribution. Do you think that's true though, and the chances are so low that getting hit by lighting is higher?
