I told my fiancé I didn't want diamonds unless they were certified conflict-free; if he had gotten me a giant rock from God knows where, I would have been upset. And if he had gone into even more debt while trying to pay for it, I would have gone ballistic. A realistic, responsible and mature partner will not want you to assume any hardship just for a ring. Some of our friends did wood rings. Others did hard gemstones or plain bands. At the end of the day if it's generally to her taste she isn't going to care, because it will be a reminder of how much you love her and she will smile every time she sees it. (I do!)
