It wasn't his fault obviously, it's just that the meal had a certain ingredient which I didn't like at all (I wasn't aware of it). Hence, I barely touched my plate. It's a desire to have you be equally involved, someone that doesn't understand vegan choices very well, and your distaste for your first meal. It's all good. Sounds like a reasonable thing. Maybe talk to him about your favorite spots to eat, other places that have vegan friendly options so he feels more comfortable making those decisions in the future. Have fun on date 2.
