Els Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 HAHAHAHAHA TheBigQuestion - Thanks man....I'm glad you get it...I was about to say, If a girl posted "Why are so many guys jerks?" I wouldn't IMMEDIATELY be like "Oh my god, dont generalize, I'm not a jerk blah blah blah" Heck, even if they said "ALL GUYS ARE JERKS!" I'd say, yeah a LOT of guys really suck....sorry...wish men were doing better But women will fight till the bitter end lol Except you completely ignored all of the posts that attempted to answer your question nicely and without gender-warring, after being fooled by your attempted burying of the hatchet. You're free to do all the gender-warring you like - I honestly don't see how some of you can participate so actively while still maintaining healthy relationships, and I doubt you do - but don't pin the blame on others when several of us put in time and effort expand our thoughts on gaming and society in general as you requested, but received zero response while you and your bros happily went back into boys vs girls mode. It's also very telling that a select few posters who were otherwise very active in this thread conveniently ignored that post of yours entirely (though it would probably have been the prudent choice given that you didn't mean it). Guess the topic just loses all its appeal once you take the men vs women aspect out of it, huh? Definitely shows what they're really here for.
Estate Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Some of this post is reasonable, a lot of it is pretty ignorant The idea that gamers now are aimed at adults because "gamers grew up" is a very stupid idea. You know why? because the percentage of people playing games now is much much bigger than 15 years ago. There's a huge number of adults playing games now who never played in their younger days because it has become so incredibly mainstream I know a couple guys who play call of duty a good 10-15 hours a week who are millionaire executives at companies. They enjoy it because it's entertaining and it's very competitive. Hell I know so many gamers nowadays who are grown adults with good jobs Oh I'm ignorant now? Ignorant because I don't spend 15 hours a week playing wizard fairy games. Jeez dude, you need to get a grip, seriously. What is with you? I don't game... you do... so what... I don't care. Look, there's a million reasons games are built for adults... adults have money... they buy them... it boils down to that... We don't ALL play them though and it doesn't make us ignorant. Why don't I call you ignorant for not liking all the things I do? Come on!!! Go play with your "billionaire" friends.
miss_jaclynrae Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I like video games, I used to be a gamer. I married one. Didn't end up being what I thought it would. Ultimately video games were ALL he wanted to do. I believe in balance. My current boyfriend? Doesn't play anything other than mario kart maybe twice a month at his best friends. We don't even have television or internet at home. I love it. We actually spend genuine time together. 3
miss_jaclynrae Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Everything in life is about balance...nobody here recommends playing games and neglecting anything else Yeah, but he said all woman hate video games.
ascendotum Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Good ol Mario. How could any wife or gf hate that lovable character.
Estate Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 You're not ignorant for not enjoying videogames, personal preferences are personal preferences. I can't make you do something you don't want to do You're ignorant for spewing the nonsense you've posted in this thread like "games are for kids" when a huge segment of the game market nowadays is rated "M" for mature and kids can't even buy them Why can't you just accept the fact that gaming is a perfectly valid art form like movies, music or anything else for that matter? The story of God of War is just as interesting and captivating as anything you'll read about Greek mythology... This is ridiculous... I can accept games... but "captivating", "art" and as good as any "greek mythology"... going a *little* overboard there I think.
Fondue Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Lately, many video games are not even about the "playing," it's about story-telling. It's almost as it if is a new medium for that. I don't play many video games these days as I have lost a lot of that flavor, but I too pick up a story-driven game from time to time. For example, I wouldn't ever pass up a Metal Gear Solid title. Those are not games, those are just epic tales. Metal Gear Solid 3 was a very, very moving. Great story. If I was dating a woman who resented the fact I pick up the controller once in a while and enjoy myself, I wouldn't be dating her for much longer. Besides, people have many other vices. Don't get me started on reality tv... 1
Author chucksagent Posted February 15, 2013 Author Posted February 15, 2013 FONDUE!!! YES!!! That is EXACTLY how I am. I don't play a lot of the games I did in my youth, but there are a few select games I never miss when they come out. And a good story is a MUST or where is the appeal??? These people who are ASSAULTING me for alleged gender warring are the same ones who were critical of me (and men in general) for playing video games AT ALL (even limited amounts) because it's, "A waste of time." Lol. HILARIOUS to me....because Apparently text messaging...productive...Getting drunk on Friday nights...productive...Facebooking...productive...reading gossip mags....productive...reading a book about a boy wizard or hobbits....productive...watching jersey house wives...productive...playing words with friends...productive...fake tanning...productive...paying $1000.00 for a purse some poor 3rd world kid made for $1.50...productive... These are all productive activites!!! And I would LOVE to know how much time people spend on ALL these activies combined...hahah rigtht??? I'm just asking people to start thinking outside the box...it's why this country is in the shape it is today though, people don't question things or dare critically think. Whatever the media and their friends and society think...that's what they will think. Nobody dares say "Well wait, all Americans do is participate in wasteful activites, so why is Video Games any different????" Lol. Nope. Drinking and driving is hot...Gaming is for losers. Got it. Go America! No clue why the world hates us.
Author chucksagent Posted February 15, 2013 Author Posted February 15, 2013 And sorry I come off like I'm attacking women on this particular issue, but the ratio is about 80/20 women who have mocked/made fun of video games compared to men who mocked/made fun of video games in my presence. So just going by the data I've experienced in my personal life. And I don't even mean limited to girlfriends...I mean just FEMALE FRIENDS... Here is an example of the ignorance... "Oh my god, you guys are pathetic...More Madden football???" Then 2 weeks later, she plays Mario Kart or Sonic Racing and is HOOKED. Her and her friends wanting to play it every time they are over the house. How does that make ANY sense. And even in college the SAME stuff happened with Mario Kart (that was before Sonic Racing)...Girls who mocked us for video games BUT THEN Mario Kart they fall in love with and get hooked.
Estate Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 This is how I know you know nothing about gaming - The complexity of the gaming industry is pretty incredible nowadays. There is a reason it grosses more than hollywood I believe. Check out the story of God of War - this is about as good as any movie I've ever seen about Greek Mythology God of War - Full Story (part 1 of 3) - YouTube God of War - Full Story (part 2 of 3) - YouTube Videogames are basically movies that are interactive nowadays I never claimed to know everything about gaming! Sorry, but I can't believe I actually watched that for 8 minutes to actually try and understand this but it's just not of interest to me. If it is to you, great... but if you're gonna treat me and any woman who doesn't wet their pants after watching this video with such distain then what do you expect? I'm in the industry man, I build software but I've never compared it to "art rivalling greek mythology".... Saying "I like video games" is fine. Saying the above and calling anyone who doesn't agree IGNORANT??? Now THAT'S why gamers get a bad rap.

Saying the above and calling anyone who doesn't agree IGNORANT??? Now THAT'S why gamers get a bad rap. Actually, from my understanding, gamers get a bad rep because they genuinely enjoy their hobby. They love it. They develop close, interpersonal relationships with people they have never met in person before. They get their competitive fix, and they go on expansive virtual adventures. Then some one comes along that is not a gamer, and they look right down their nose at the gamer and say "you are wasting your time and your life because you don't experience life the same way I do" My experience.

Then some one comes along that is not a gamer, and they look right down their nose at the gamer and say "you are wasting your time and your life because you don't experience life the same way I do" My experience. What you mentioned has been my experience as well. Lots of gamers are genuinely misunderstood because of this. But just look at this thread. 10+ pages of woman-bashing. It doesn't just stop with how women are ignorant and unenlightened because they 'hate video games' (which several of us have tried to show via proof wasn't even true and got shouted down by the 'boys club'), it goes on to how women never admit they're wrong, women don't make friends, followed by bashing every other hobby imaginable. It's like being back in the boys vs girls era in grade school. I'm surprised nobody mentioned cooties yet. People like this greatly worsen the rep that gamers get, unfortunately. Some gamers ARE living in their own tiny little world and have never really met people, or obtained a balanced view on society, and are full of bitterness and needing a victim to put the blame for their life on. I don't think games cause that, because plenty of gamers can be mature and balanced individuals, more so that such people gravitate towards gaming. We really seem to have a lot of bad apples here. 3
Titania22 Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Maybe don't generalise. I find a majority of adults male and female don't "get" gaming. That haven't explored it, don't know about it and have other interests they are just as passionate about as a gamer is for gaming. Then there are gamers, again both male and female, we enjoy it, we can see the benefits of it, but we are unlikely to convince non-gamers of the validity of the past time. There are also those that don't mind gaming, but like a balance of past times and interests. Personally it is insulting to me that you assume its female that hate video games. I love them, am committed to playing them as a life choice (as I have done other things in my life already and don't see the need for other interests anymore), and have raised my children to be avid gamers. Note, I am a single mother, and if their father had been raising them he would have kept them off the computer as much as possible and discouraged gaming. This is not a male/female thing it is a gamer/non-gamer thing. How about finding a GF/Fiance/Wife that is a gamer? 1

As a "non gamer" lets recap this thread.... I (the non-gamer) have no problem with games, I play occassionally but think playing them obsessively is unhealthy which I would say about a LOT of things. Don't particularly look down my nose at anyone, I'm just not into it. Some folks like Ultimate Frisbee, I never got into it but it could be fun, I never had time for it though. You guys... because I do not agree playing a video game is an "art form" have labelled me an ignorant human being. I came in here without any opinion of some people on this thread... guess my opinion leaving it? Here's where the bad rap comes from. Everyone has hobbies and interests but doesn't expect everyone else to enjoy them. I race cars in my spare time, that's my passion.... how many times have I heard "Why do you do it, going round and round in circles, boring...." but to me I could talk for days on the intricacies of it all... But I don't care if people don't enjoy it, it's not for everyone. I don't call them ignorant and continue to push by opinions and views down their throat when they've already said they just aren't into it. Edited February 15, 2013 by Estate 1
ltjg45 Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 How about finding a GF/Fiance/Wife that is a gamer? There is plenty of them out there. The only problem is that they have a major lack of fashion ability. My fashion ability is not that great. I can at least wear matching-colored clothing. But hardcore gaming males and females? The sheer majority is even less clueless than I am. This is why, even though I have a 3DS, I don't want any more gaming than that because I'm not, and will never be, anything like them. Hell, because of this, it really makes me want to give up gaming. That is how bad this has became.

And that can also be where this idea of an unbalanced life comes from too. I guess we would have to ask USMCHokie and Ninjainpajamas for their objective view if I am lacking in fashion ability, since they have met me. I guess I am coming from the perspective of having done and experienced many things in life and then have chosen gaming as my particular passion.

Author chucksagent Posted February 15, 2013 Author Posted February 15, 2013 I get really annoyed when the heroes of this website put on their capes and get all defensive about "stereotypes." Come on people, NOBODY is saying EVERY SINGLE WOMAN HATES GAMING. But there are stereotypes on both sides of the aisle. Take a show like everybody loves raymond. That stereotypes that MOST men can be lazy and not help out around the house. ACCURATE that it COMMONLY and FREQUENTLY happens that way. Now if you are the kind of pathetic person who sits at home screams at the TV "Ray Ramano is the devil for advancing stereotypes!!" Like you are on here accusing the men of this thread, that is simply sad and time wasting. Because nobody EVER said ALL WOMEN. Another stereotype in that show is how Debra HATES when Ray goes golfing. I thought of this and talked to a guy I work with who has been married for a while, grown kids out of the house, etc. He is much older than I. I told him about this debate. He made the Everybody Loves Ray golf connection with video games and says the answer is simple...Women view these types of things as something MEN LOVE that takes time away from them. He said he's known LOTS of friends over the years who would get crap from their wives over hunting. The penultimate MANLY thing to do. Before we had grocery stores and all this fancy stuff we had today, HUNTING is what drew a female to a man. So I don't buy this whole "it's a pathetic thing." Because I know plenty of women who think a guy in his mid 30's+ bar hopping is also pathetic...nothing better to do but be out with the young crowd, hitting on young girls, getting drunk...So really think about it. It makes sense that the girls (NOT ALL GIRLS, BUT THE GIRLS WHO DO) who HATE or LOATHE or MOCK gaming, really just want what they want, attention, so they do what they can to get it. Gaming has that"nerdy" stigma, so I will pick on it and mock it and hopefully get what I want....which is to belittle him to where he doesn't want to play.
Els Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 So... it's great and fine to propagate stereotypes about women and men, but ignorant and narrow-minded to propagate stereotypes about gamers? Or maybe only ignorant and narrow-minded to propagate stereotypes about gamers when women do it, but completely acceptable when men like your dear fashion-conscious friend ltjg45 do it? Huh. Who woulda thunk.
ltjg45 Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Speaking of bashing gamers and perpetrating stereotypes about them... I AM a gamer. (Maybe I won't be in the near future.....) Do you honestly think I enjoy saying that? I merely saying why I do not go after gamer females. That is really one of the biggest reasons why. I prefer not knowing that you are a gamer at first. I prefer people who meet me in public to think the same way. I can understand why gamers has such a bad rep. In a way, they do deserve it.
Andy_K Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 There is plenty of them out there. The only problem is that they have a major lack of fashion ability. My fashion ability is not that great. Your stereotyping of female gamers is even worse than most of the stereotyping of male gamers which has appeared in this thread. Simple truth of it is, if people were to just stop hiding and pretending they aren't into games, they'd find a lot of the 'normal' people they meet are very much into games too.

Who woulda thunk. Women and men are simple creatures. They may have the power to think outside of the norm but, most cases, we simply do act the same way. Stereotypes makes sense. Gamers is the same way. Only a handful, like you, doesn't act like the rest. Unfortunately, the "rest" all acts the same. They are filthy, smelly, obese, socially incapable, and can easily get mad the moment one thing goes against them. Of course there is going to be stereotypes against gamers and, until the rest changes, it will still be there. So no, your stereotypes is not wrong. I may disagree with you but they are certainly not wrong. And, for what it is worth, gamers deserve it. This is why, despite I play while going solo, I'm putting it down for good whenever I'm in a relationship.

This is what I have seen with my own 2 eyes whenever I see a female who is an actual gamer. Every other decent female that isn't an actual gamer that I stepped up to turned me down the moment they saw my portable gaming system in my pocket. If you want to call it a stereotype, be my guest. Unfortunately, for you and for me, this is reality and I can't change it. Unfortunately, they fear of letting that go because that will simply make them less unattractive on that basis alone. Which makes sense after what I have seen. If a female doesn't want her mate to have nothing to do with video games, I can't fault her for that. If I was younger and more naive? Yeah. Now? No. Can't fault anyone for looking down on me for playing games anymore. Edited February 15, 2013 by ltjg45
