Can someone be a casual crack smoker? I have an employee who I think is starting to have issues at home with his wife. He says she is a crack smoker, but that she mostly manages its and is very functional with a few exceptions. But he is missing work which is unusual. He is a great employee and I don't want to lose him. I would be interested in any replies from people that have direct experience with this substance. Thanks.

I really think anyone calling someone - or themselves - a "casual crack smoker" is deluding themselves.

I am sure some people can. The mayor of washington dc used to to smoke crack. Obama used to use coke.. However i would not hire crack smokers.

I know of people who smoked it. One chick use to fire it up in the locker room on break in the casino then go back and deal.

Have any of you actually used the stuff?

:o Yes. Unintentionally. They told me it was freebasing.

My then-husband told me it was crack. I kept saying "no...it's freebasing" and he said it was crack. I didn't believe him so I went and asked the people I smoked with if it was crack or freebasing and they didn't say anything but just smiled.

But it was crack.

Theres no such thing as a casual crackhead. Some are better at hiding it a little longer than others though.

i'd talk to the employee about his ruining of his mind, i met crack addicts, i never kept in touch, but i knew one woman who was interesting one day and the next day her sentences were comprised of three or four words, no crack addict creates much so there isn't even a case for it there, the addicts never even ate properly

not even to say.... burn down a house? Cause that's precisely who I'd be looking to hire.

Are you also a drug counseler?

No, but you asked for some information, and I thought I'd help. How does my providing you with a link containing reasonable information, make me a drug 'counseler' (sic)?

So more than once? And apparently you didn't become addicted?

I guess by using the term crackhead would imply a regular user. Is there a difference between a regular user and an addict?

Nope. There isn't. A regular user IS an addict.

Let me expound on that for a second to give you a better idea.

First of all, crack is cooked down cocaine. The druggies, back in the 80s realized they could cook down cocaine into a more addictive form, and sell it cheaper...but for more profit.

Statistically, crack is running right at a 100% addiction rate for first time users. Theres no high like the first one....and they keep chasing that first high. Its a nasty, nasty drug. And very, VERY few who get on it ever come off it.

No I didn't become addicted. I didn't even get that high. It was disgusting and tasted like chemicals and smelled pretty bad too.

I would be careful of this person though if I were you. IMO I think if you use you use. I'm not sure you can just do it casually. The couple I smoked with did so regularly and they were pretty undesirable. They tricked me.

But that's not the only thing that I would say that was undesirable about them. Their lives were a mess and the guy beat on his kid after we smoked.

I've NEVER seen a "casual" crack user. They usually are willing to steal and take anything of value from anyone they can.

Stopping is extremely difficult. Detox is usually necessary.

I highly doubt your employee is being honest with you - addicts lie.

If he's missing work or habits are changing - he may just have the progression of the disease kicking into high(ER) gear.

Not worth employing him - VERY RISKY for YOU!

You must be the exception then, as Monster said you start your hooked. Thank you for you candor. Have you seen any former crack users that do not use anymore? I am going to offer him to send her to a 30 day program that is part of the company insurance for dependency and see what he says. It would tough to let him go.

My boyfriend is a recovering crackhead. I wasn't with him when he was using, but I knew him. He couldn't hold a job, he pawned everything to get money for more crack, and eventually stole to get it. He spent time in prison due to him having to get his next high. He has been clean years now, but has to work a good recovery program.

I have been in the rooms of AA and NA for over 9 years and I have never seen a functioning crackhead.

Random test him now!

It's the behavior that tells you everything they aren't going to tell.

You are good at making excuses FOR him...that's what helps people to keep using.

No I don't know any of these people anymore thank goodness.

I think it's a good idea to offer her some type of rehabilitation but I'm not sure she'd be willing to go...although it is a kind and generous gesture on your part.

People have to want to quit addiction. Unfortunately no one can make them .
