Sugarkane Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 My parents seem to be stuck in the 1950s for some reason. Doesn't work in this day and age. They think you have to be married just to leave home. I find this completely puts guts off. My parents have always been strict and over controlling even though I was a good kid. I find their advice is backwards and outdated. Talking to them never works.
january2011 Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 Then don't talk to them. If you are financially independent, over 18 and have your own place, you don't have to let them run your life. 2
mortensorchid Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 This is a rough topic. Not that the OPs response was not appropo, but there is more to it than that. Parents are part of your life whether you want them to be or not, and we are not always going to see eye to eye with them from the trivial to the most important. They want you to be happy, they want your needs to be taken care of (financial, material, emotional, etc.), they fear that you are in a limbo someplace. Time goes on, they learn to relax and so do we as their kids. Accept the fact that some things are not going to change no matter what. Period.
mario_C Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 Bad advice is what parents are for - their revenge for the grief we served them. Anyway, good luck to you. Time to stand up and walk away, which is not easy.

I think more people would benefit from relationships if they took your parents advice. they have good values and while theyre idea of how to have a relationship is outdated it works for them. with 50% divorce rate, they must be doing something right. Im sure they believe in the basic things more people should implement old fashioned things like treating a woman right, courting her, being chivalrous/a gentleman. I truly believe in these things.
udolipixie Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 Probably best suited to attempt to limit the amount of conversing about your romantic/sexual life and when it goes that way simply listen but not hear when they speak. 1
