Okay, I'm not sure if this is a new trend with women on dating sites....but what is with the "ariel" shots.

Meaning - shots taken above your head, while them looking up at the camera. You cannot get an accurate representation of what they look like that way.

On dating profiles, I've seen a woman with like 5 or 6 photos in a row, ALL shots coming from the same angle.

Is this an attempt to mislead the onlooker about their appearance?

To me it's more phallic than anything else.. the facial shot

At least that is why I think they are so popular...

It's been around long enough that it's often called the Myspace Angle or Myspace Shot.

There's a (somewhat robust) 'definition' here which at least suggests how long it has been around:

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=myspace%20angle

Sometimes it's flattering (reveals cleavage, hides double chins), but I think you're right that it makes it hard to get an accurate idea of what someone looks like.

Yeah, I took a gamble recently....this woman had KIND of a "above the head angle shot" wasn't too bad...she looked chunky, but I was gambling on her being "thick" (meaning proportionately, curvy...sometimes they don't have much in the mid-section) but turned out she was a bit bigger than that in person (very cute face though...nice breasts/cleavage, smooth skin, sweet girl, very affectionate (latin lady) and if she lost the weight...she'd have no problem turning heads.

Thing is, when a woman's belly sticks as far as her boobs or farther, that's not too attractive.

I took a gamble just to confirm it....she was nice company, but that's all you can do is just decide to meet with them to find out what they look like in person.

It makes them look slimmer.

Ariel is a Disney mermaid character. AERIAL is a type of pic taken from high up. Learn how to spell!

Not a new trend. It's an old photography trick.

I agree with you though. If you're going to "lie" or "mislead" like that on a dating site, you're only going to end up with no second dates, fewer guys emailing, and even a few leaving right at the beginning of the date.

If you have to hide how you look, then you either need to look into how to improve your look or learn to love yourself and realize that even "fugly" people can find love.

Look how many 8s, 9s, and 10s are chronically single and/or insanely picky...while the "not so hot" girls are getting married.

Actually, it doesn't always, not for me, but it always makes a woman's eyes look larger and larger eyes are actually much more attractive than tinier ones. It also gives us better face shapes.

That being said, you can't tell how a woman looks like from pictures at all. I'm not photogenic at all and I did a lot of online dating and the guys always said I was hotter in person than I looked in my photos. They were very pleased.

I've also met many men this way and it really just varies from person to person regardless of the angle. Some look identical to their pictures online, some look much worse, and others look much better.

Because most guys are scared ****less of hot girls.

If it's done the right way I think it's sexy.

Usually, I try to find someone who has a pic that's from the waist up...and sometimes I will be on the look out for the "double chin" if there is just a face shot.

Funny thing, I have a female friend that's half-Asian/American....she has a VERY round (onion-shaped) face, and when men see her just a face shot, they think she's a chubby woman....when in fact, she's got a nice body.

THere are some women that have double chins, but have great bodies (go figure), but the majority of double chins indicate a heavy set person.

ALSO, just because a woman with a chin with no double chin, a rather angular face, you can just assume she's thin...when that might not be entirely accurate.
