I think the problem I've had lately with dating is that I'm "too nice" as a person. I used to date much easier but I feel like I've lost my edge the past few years. I don't want to be a hardcore "bad boy." I want to be more of the "Gentleman-Jerk."

An example would be Joseph Gordon Levitt's character at the end of 500 Days of Summer. After he's dumped by his girlfriend, he quits his job and then goes for an interview for a new job. He's waiting in the lobby along with this other girl who's really pretty, also there for a job interview.

She asks, "Excuse me. Are you here for the interview?"

He replies, "Ah. My competition."

She replied, "It appears so."

He says, "Yes. Well... I hope... you don't get the job."

You think he's going to wish her good luck but he openly says "I hope you don't get the job." So cool. So bad ass. She isn't even offended, and they agree to go out on a date later.

Any other examples of the Gentleman-Jerk to learn from?

This is called sarcastic humor. Nothing jerky about it.

If I liked the general vibe of a guy, I'd find that funny. It's not being jerky, I wouldn't say. It's more a kind of playful blunt honesty that works well when two people take a liking to eachother.

My brother was in a bar once with one of his friends who had taken a shine to a woman at a nearby table. She was with a guy, and it looked to them like a first date that was going horribly. My brother wrote a note for his friend and handed it to him. It said "I'd like an invitation to the wedding. My number is (number)."

As they were leaving, his friend dropped the note onto the table in front of the woman. She phoned within the week. They've been married for years now.
