I gotta tell, it's a real let down when you think a girl's interested in you but you find out she's just being friendly. How do you tell the two apart?

And likewise, how do you tell if someone's playing hard-to-get or genuinely NOT interested?

god I wish I knew! I have the same problem. I don't know if this guy likes me or if he's just really sweet and nice...

ha..actually, since I am a girl, I can probably offer you a little perspective. Does she call/text/message you without you talking to her first? When you see her in person, does she touch your arm, hand, or shoulder, anything like that? Does she seem smiley or nervous around you? Those are indicative of interest usually, at least with me.

A girl who is just being friendly won't go on a date with you.

Yeah, the 'date' thing is probably the quickest and easiest methodology. It also shuts down the (not obviously) married women who are otherwise inappropriately 'friendly'.

However, beware of the broken ones who seek external validation, as they push all the right buttons, including the 'date' one, and then go upside down. Trust your gut. Good luck :)

I gave up trying to tell ;) because I cant tell at all.

When I think they are interested they arent, when I think they arent, they are.... the combinations are endless ;) . Who really knows.

Some people probably get really good at hiding it when they like someone.

Someone who likes you will want to spend time with you! :)

The thing your probably looking for is a way to tell without putting yourself out there.

Unfortunately theres no way to tell for sure. I am sure you are trying to spare your self the possibility of being shot down by, knowing for sure, before making a move.

1. make a move, then you will have your answer.

2. Sit it out and wait for her to make the first move.

With option 2, she may never make a move because shes like you and doesnt want to put herself out there to be shot down, so neither of you end up doing anything about it. Or she wont make a move because she definitely isnt interested.

**** happens dude, just go for it. What happens if you get shot down? Nothin, your right where you were before.

Dude, Ive been shot down before, dont take it personally. Ive also been in the situation where I just never made a move thus nothing ever happened, and I have no idea whether they were into me or not. On the same token my last girlfriend made the first move on me, (I generally didnt think of her that way until she sprung it on me, and I was like what the hell? I'll give it a go).

Yeah, but she might go out with you, not knowing it's going to be a date.

From what I can guess there are several gates that a man has to pass through, to determine her interest.

Asking out a woman can really only tell you if she's not interested or neutral.

The next step is to try and do a physical move. Most girls only kiss guys they are interested in. Of course there are exceptions. At least if a woman rejects a kiss, it's a sign that she's not interested.

That happened to me once and the person let me know it was a date while we were eating lunch. I explained the reasons it wouldn't work: 1) "You are 20 years younger than me" and 2) "I'm not a lesbian."

'Hey, I'd love for you to join me for dinner on Friday night.'

If an affirmative response:

'Great, it's a date. Pick you up at 7'

No ambiguity. If her response to that line indicates even the smallest amount of waffling, forget her and don't look back. Too many other willing and interested dates to be entertained. Spend your dinner budget wisely :)

Like some of the others have said, there is romantic interest if you are spending time together (i.e. going on dates) and there is physical contact/affection/kissies :bunny::).
