ViciousViolet Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 I challenge you all to start conversations with random people. We need to become more sociable as a society once again. It seems like everywhere we go, people are so into their gadgets that they don't even acknowledge one another. This past week I did exactly this, I started conversations with random people, and it was so much fun. It is especially exciting to do this with attractive guys who are by themselves. Like the other day there was this guy in front of my at a gas station holding a couple of packs of beer. I asked him if I was invited to the party. We talked and laughed for a bit and went on our separate ways. Other times I'll just ask someone how they're doing. This almost always leads to a conversation. I challenge everyone to do this at least once a day. Just tell yourself before you leave that house that you'll get to know a stranger today. You never know what can come out of this.
desertmoon Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 Interesting challenge. People always talk to me when I am out and about. Sometimes, when I go to the store to pick up milk, I wish I could just go in, pick up the milk and pay...but no..there is always a guy ahead of me or behind me waiting to pay who thinks it is necessary to start a conversation with me. I must have a kind, approachable, non-threatening face. Just this morning I went to go get coffee from Starbux and while in line this young woman behind me, touched my hair and said "you have such beautiful, shiny hair"...How weird, touching a stranger's hair!
Gallaxia Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 I agree. I've started to do that too but it can be a little challenging. Because with the explosion of the internet, people's inter-social skills have deteriorated. (And people are so much more angry today!) So much so, that If you initiate convo, they almost always assume something's up. Though once you pass that first obstacle of breaking the ice, it's a lot of fun. I know this one time, I managed to have a nice long convo with someone I later found out to be one of Madonna's road managers. It was awesome.

Agree, general assumption here is that you are either insane or drunk while this is a major over generalisation, I also find that Americans are much better at this than Europeans.
Cracker Jack Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 If only I had the willpower and guts to pull this off........
MrNate Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 I think I shall take up this challenge! I'm a pretty sociable guy, but I feel like I miss out on a lot by not taking it to the best levels i can. I almost feel like we should quantify this challenge in someway. Or is it more of just one a day? Shoot, who knows what kind of women you could meet? And you get better social skills along the way.. Sounds like a win/win to me.
lso802 Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 I do it sometimes, but I'm not sure if I want to do it daily. I already have to find hiding spots on campus to avoid people trying to talk to me. I know that sounds bad.
Gallaxia Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 It doesn't even have to be daily. That might be too much pressure. It could just be whenever you're out & about and happen to remember. Doesn't really even matter where, just whatever your stomping grounds are; where you'd feel most comfortable and at ease. A bar, picking up carryout, grocery store, gym, bookstore, whatever. It's all gravy because the point is just to engage.
Rorschach Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 I do this everyday just for fun, but it's true I rarely ever have anybody start a conversation with me but I always talk to strangers. (I wasn't very good at listening to my parents at 5) I also get in cars when offered candy.
