Did he want to hang out?

I'm having a hard time reading this guy I like. He's someone I dated in the past, but essentially rejected because I was just out of a breakup. He has told me he just wants to be friends, but he acts like he still likes me (flirts a lot, always tries to pay for me, always wants to make sure I'm comfortable). I really like him but i know he might be wary of me since I rejected him in the past.

We hung out this past Friday for like 10 hours. He went out of town on Saturday and Sunday, but came over Sunday afternoon and we hung out more. We had mentioned going to see a band that we both like that always plays on Mondays. It was sort of implied that we'd be going this Monday (last night), but no specific plans were made. He seemed really interested in going, but in the back of my mind it occurred to me that that would be a lot of hanging out for two people who aren't dating. I figured he'd call yesterday if he wanted to go. We texted a bit about something else earlier in the day, but he didn't mention the band and I figured he didn't want to go.

Then last night at midnight he sent me a text saying, "I thought we were going to see a band tonight." I thought that was weird. Had he been waiting for me to text him? Or did he wait to text me after the show was over so he wouldn't have to go? If so, why did he text at all? He's generally really courteous, and normally I feel like if he didn't want to go, he would call and say so. I feel like he's definitely kind of guarded around me because he doesn't want to get hurt, so he's hard to read.

I realize I'm being super neurotic, but if anyone can give me their two cents, I'd be interested in hearing what other people think.
