mortensorchid Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 I got an email from someone on a dating website today. Does this look like a form letter? Please read ... HI, My name is _____, and as I was looking through my matches, YOUR name came up. We have a lot in common according to match, but I would really like to get to know you better. I was most recently employed by (company), and when (company) took over, I lost my job. No big deal right now as my IRA is keeping me afloat. I’m not frugal, but I’m not really cheap either!! I have 3 wonderful children, and they mean the world to me, and will ALWAYS take precedence. I’m a planner, but don’t mind if plans change, cuz I’m very fluid too! So that’s me in a nutshell. Interested? I don’t know if you’re a “paid” member so I think I have figured a way around this. On ____ my chat ID is ------. On _____, I am simply _______. Find me there so we can chat ok? Hope to talk to you soon!!! I find it a little strange if someone is offering their alternate means of communication through a website that one has to pay to be on. Is this a red flag? I feel like it is.
Land Shark Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Sounds like a cover letter. Not a good one either. Not sure why you would throw out "I'm jobless and living off my retirement savings" in your first communication. Why didn't he also write, "my feet generally stink, and I'm prone to road rage"? He should be leaving a bit of mystery for you. I have no idea about the alternative communcation paths.
melodymatters Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Well, from what I've learned on here, it is free to join match and wink, but to write a real letter, one needs to pay. My guess is that this guy has simply had the experience of trying to reach out to members who haven't paid and therefore have no way to answer him back, so he came up with an alternative in case you aren't a paid member and DO want to answer him. So, no red flag.
Star Gazer Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Sounds like a cover letter. Not a good one either. Not sure why you would throw out "I'm jobless and living off my retirement savings" in your first communication. Why didn't he also write, "my feet generally stink, and I'm prone to road rage"? :lmao: I recently received a message from a guy who started his email by saying something like, "I am a mortician in the Army. I touch dead people every day, but I'm not weird or anything." That was enough to freak me out. But what's interesting is that I learned last week that a very good friend of mine got the same message from the same guy, went out with him, and really liked him. His job is actually really, really admirable... I felt bad for writing him off so quickly based on his opening line. So while it's weird, yes, I would try not to be so judgmental.
meerkat stew Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Form letter from person with poor judgment, best to ignore.
bobdole Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 I've been getting "generic" mails offering contact through regular email a lot too - on zoosk. On Zoosk the first email to and from is free but you have to pay to go further than that. A lot of people get around it by giving their email address or phone # in the first contact. I normally don't mind, but the mails I've gotten recently - though well written - are obviously generic. Women, especially the hot ones I've been getting these from, don't have to bother with generic emails. They just have to say "Hi there!" and that's it for the most part and men will respond. So they sound fishy to me and I haven't responded to any of those.
YellowShark Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 IMHO... Waaaaaaaaaay too much info. He sounds needy and desperate, which means possibly he won't take rejection well. But do what you must, and what makes you comfortable, I am not here to tell you what to do.
bobdole Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 bobdole runied kansas. he sux WOW! My own personally forum stalker!
Author mortensorchid Posted September 5, 2010 Author Posted September 5, 2010 It read to me like a form letter as well, I'm glad that others thought the same way. I too would not put so much information about me out there just like that to someone. I shall just ignore him.
