Okay! This is going to sound a little juvenile, but here goes:

I am out of town in Italy right now for the world championships of a sport I play in. My plan is to now travel to Switzerland for a week (I'm from Canada). I'm here on my own and as a present my mother was offering to book a flight for my boyfriend to come travel with me on a points ticket. That sounds great - except - my boyfriend has been so slow with replies on Facebook messages. My last ex left me while I was abroad in Japan for a month, so I have a bit of a fear of boyfriends leaving me while I'm abroad... and his slow responses have me panicking a bit. I sent him a message saying I wish he'd get back to me quicker last night... to which he hasn't replied, but it is entirely possible he hasn't checked his facebook lately.

My friend has told me I should invite him anyways and not put so much stock into Facebook messages. What do you guys think!?

why don't you just pick up the phone to call? use the hotel phone...if you don't have long distance then can't you buy a phone card? there's got to be a way to get a hold of him other than facebook.

or if you're really stuck can't you get a friend to contact him so that he can call you directly at your hotel? calls from canada to europe are really inexpensive.

Exactly. All of this "free stuff" on the internet has created a real contradition. One buys a computer, gets an ISP both of which represent say a $1K investement with on going payments to ISP, then all of a sudden it's like anathema to have to spend money on real objectives like making a phone call. The more I see of FB and "texting" and their place in so many dilemas which trigger "what do I do?" threads, the more I see those technologies as agents of social dysfunction. I say, pretend they don't exit--the world have become a pretty well-populated place without them.
