"Getting Serious about Pornography" - article

Recommended Posts

how are gun control and porn even comparable? last time I checked..guns have never come close to ruining my marriage!

Your marriage is not representative of all marriages or the typical marriage.

Guns and porn are similar in that both are fine if used responsibly, and harmful if used irresponsibly. And similar in that some paranoid or close-minded judgemental people seem incapable of grasping that distinction.

I didn't read the article ... But to offer an opinion on pornography - It contributes to crimes: Abuse of women and children incl rape, murder ..

Rape rates have gone down significantly in the last 10-15 years as online pornography has spread to epidemic proportions. So the evidence not only doesn't support your claim, it flat our contradicts it. But why let the facts get in the way of a nice little prejudice?

You Go Girl

My H is both an alcoholic and a pornoholic.

So you may think my opinion biased. But, I don't think so...after studying this obsession and learning a great deal from psychotherapists and divorce statistics, I will say--

If porn is so important to a man that he will jeapordize his relationship with a SO--

it's too important to him.

Completely agree with this. Porn is too important TO HIM. The problem is WITH HIM. Not with porn.

This guy is an addictive personality, not a helpless victim of pornography.

I will leave the porn argument for another day, but wanted to say that I do not watch romantic movies (for the most part) or read romance novels ever. When my friends at work tease me about it, I say that I don't think it's good for me to have unrealistic expectations on things like that.

I avoid Twilight like the plague and the Twilight Moms scare me ;)

I don't follow. I'm not sure what romance novels and Twilight have to do with what I posted. Did you think I was bashing porn?

I'm not anti porn by any stretch of the imagination and well understand fantasy/ideals.

I also understand that fantasy/ideals can get out of hand when people choose to misuse them.

I am not saying that you are anti porn, the point that I am trying to make is that many people make the argument that pornography gives men an unrealistic expectation of sex with their significant others. How many women routinely wear garter belts and stockings on a daily basis? How many women can actually deep-throat while performing oral sex? I would suggest not many. Usually, the men in a romance novel are perfect gentlemen and would always rather be with their significant others than watching the NFL play-offs, LOL. So my point is simply both mediums are simply fantasies.
