Has marriage outlived it's usefulness?

It seems as though in the earlier part of the last century, people were more dedicated to making their marriages last. Why was it different then.

 

 

Before we lament the passing of long-lasting marriages, let's also remember that in the earlier part of the last century, and earlier - women were often considered the property of their husbands, couldn't vote, own property, control their own reproduction and often were reviled or left with no options if they divorced. Also, just because people stayed married for years didn't necessarily mean they were happier.
