materialistic careers

As far as longing to do something creative. All you need to do is to ...well...do it. You don't need an advanced degree to embark on an art project. Get some supplies and have at it. Chances are you have some things around the house that could be used.

I think fear prevents people from learning something new. Fear of not being ...good at it. The more you do the better you become. I am a fairly good artist. I know more about construction then I ever thought I would want to. It is a trail and error kind of thing. Believe me, I screw up alot.

Habitat for humanity would be a way to learn some simple construction and help out at the same time.

Local theaters would love volunteers (no money) to help out or be background characters.

Please post your pasta self portrait when complete.:D

I do have to say I don't know how many careers involve law and theater. Sounds like a law and order spin off.

Yeah but I don't want my degrees for a career just for fun  Great ideas though, I think I'm liking the Habitat for Humanity on the most.

I don't think I've ever made a macaroni picture! It's going on the list

Buy/open a bookstore.

I've thought of that! I love the idea, it just seems so out of reach

time to start plunking down $20 a pop for the state lottery then!

I thought lotto tickets were only $1  And the thought has crossed my mind

Snap.

I feel exactly like you Allina. I like my job, and I think I am quite good at it, but I feel like I limited my options, as there is nothing else I am qualified to do, and to do anything else would mean taking a major paycut.

Now that I have my lovelife sorted out, I think about this more and more.

The thought of doing this till I retire terrifies me, but the thought of starting again for no money is just as scary.

There are lots of other things I would rather do- present a travel show on TV, be a chef, write music for films, design jewellery, etc etc.

The great thing about my job I guess is that I can finance these kind of things (well cooking and night classes, maybe not a TV career) as hobbies.

However, I need to get off my butt and enrol, I did a craft class a while back, and loved it. And one day I plan to have a large vegetable garden.

Exactly! I feel like you often "get me" it's nice :)

This can be a good thing. Expressing interest in many areas is great. Taking it to the next level an persuing an interest can be daunting.

I suggest with so many varied interest that you give each a month. Sounds like a fun project to undertake.

I should devote a month to photography. I have always had an interest.

I think my problem is knowing where to get started so I lean towards more structured ways of doing things. This month has been kayaking month for me, so much fun!

I am inspired. Lets all report back in a month to see whether we have enjoyed our various "things".

This week I have won tickets to a film festival so I am going to tick

"watch more independent films" off this months list.

I may make a macaroni picture....;)

I think that if am the kind of inherently lazy(ish), grass is always greener type of person that would envy people no matter what I did.

Even if I were working doing something I was very passionate about, I am sure that it would get mundane and I would wish I was doing something else from time to time.

Whatever job you do, there's routine, admin and lots of boring bits involved. Tanbark talked about being a musician if he didn't have to work. Well yeah. I like playing the piano - but the reality is that instead of setting myself "really difficult piece" targets and working to meet those targets, I always end up just pottering about playing things by ear and enjoying myself. If I wasn't working, it would be exactly the same. I'm too lazy, unmotivated and Jack-of-all-tradesish to get really good at anything. Whether or not I'm working.

If I didn't have to work and had money to do whatever I liked, I would move straight to the Caribbean. No procrastination or messing around there. No being too lazy or "tired" to climb onto the plane. I'd sell, give away or burn most of my possessions here so that I didn't have to lug them onto the plane with me. Then it would just be me, a cocktail and a gigolo or two and a stack of books (plus friends and family visiting sporadically - the gigolos obviously being sent packing when family were there) in front of a warm and inviting ocean. Being lazy. I'd take a laptop with me onto the beach so that I could keep people here updated as to my progress.

Same here. Especially same here about the piano bit. I am a real Jack of all trades type person, i will give anything a go, but bore easily, especially when i am not immediately good at something.

Glad to hear I am not alone.

I would come and visit you on the Caribbean, but Wonderboy is more than enough gigolo for me. We play the "what would you do if you won the lottery game" alot. Euro-Millions on Friday! We have a ticket.

Mmmm.... beach+cocktails+books. Sounds like paradise.

The Caribbean sounds lovely.

Even in the nice climate, and when not in my hammock enjoying cocktails brought to me by...Juan. I might long to express myself creatively.

I might open a shop that catered to tourists. I would sell my bad art that folks could take back to the mainland as a momento of their travel.

Of course there are no set hours...just when I feel like it.

Now I am inspired to purchase a lottery ticket.

Girls, you know you'll be welcome chez lindya-in-the-Caribbean any time. when I finally dream and dither my way to multi-millionairehood...and I trust a similar invitation will be extended should either of you hit lucky with the numbers.

Does anyone actually do for a living what they would choose if money wasn't an issue? Though I like my job I sure don't. There is nothing wrong with this or my past job, but if I didn't need money I wouldn't be here.

nope. i actually hate my job very much, but it's the best job i could get with the education i have thus far, that pays decently.

all i do is sit by the PC to write up boring medical related articles. it's a bizarre blend of research and journalism, and it's really, really boring. sure, i've always like to write, but this kind of writing is painful.

if i could do whatever i wanted, without having to worry about money, i'd write a column for a magazine or be an interior designer.

from what i've read, both make pretty crappy money, which is unfortunate because there is a lot of effort poured in, i think.

i've always wanted to do something "artsy" because i find such things appealing, unlike the more technical/science-based work i am doing now.

oh well. :(

My job is ok, I dont love it or hate it. The positives I heard is if you perform well, they generally give raises every year. And from what I've seen, people are usually constantly promoted to higher positions with more responsibilities because the company is only 8 years old and constantly growing/expanding.

Although I think if I wasn't so stressed and tired all the time, I would probably enjoy my job.

If money didn't matter...I would consider pursuing acting. Knowing the kind of person I am, I constantly need new challenges to keep me motivated.

I have the arts degree and I managed to get a technical job with it. But for the last nine years I haven't used either of those experiences much, since I've been mostly a SAHM with some part-time work on the side.

I am planning to rev back up on both sides of the coin. I have already reached some benchmarks toward those goals. I love working with engineers, and I love the artsy stuff I used to do as well. But the tech side is the money side.

I'm a bartender, which I consider to be the most fun job in the world, and yes, it lets me pay my bills, plus a few luxuries here and there. (like food lol) :)

Of course, the hours can be quite long, you don't ALWAYS make great money, and of course, the legal/security issues involved with working in an establishment that serves booze....

But, once you know what you are doing, you can have lots of fun. I do! :)

Of course, for years, I thought I was going to be a professional standup comedian (which I technically am, just on extended hiatus)... Now...THAT is a professional no one enters for the money, since the average comedian doesn't see his first paid gig for about 1-2 years after getting started, and the average gig can pay from about $50-$200, unless you work a major resort or casino.

During my years of comedy, I did plenty of acting/extra work, which is also a LOT of fun, but not very profitable. The fun part is being on-set when your favorite TV shows are being made, and watching overpaid actors mess up their lines....3...4...20 times in a row. :) (Sam Waterston is NOTORIOUS for screwing up his lines over and over again...they should name the show Law & Disorder) :)

Now of course, during all these years, I didn't make as much money as I would have if I stayed in my (then) field of wholesale electronics, but you know something? I have enough stories to last a lifetime.

You don't get to step on the feet of a Tony-Award winning actress (and get yelled at for it) or do improv scenes with a former Whose Line Is It Anyway? cast member selling Canon printers. :)

My comedy career is quite dormant, though I am planning a huge comeback (I have 2 offers so far to produce some interesting events.... don't laugh.. a gay club...and a Republican fundraiser! - I really hope I don't get my material switched on me between the 2 shows) :)

But anyway......

Always enjoy what you do. Money is important, but as they say... if you are doing what you love... you'll never WORK a day in your life. :)

-tp

and is STILL overworked.

:laugh::laugh: oh, can you just picture the folks coming out of the closet in either camp if your material got mixed up?

it could be worse ... you could have had to write those health topic PSAs that used to run in the 1950s ("syphillis ... also known as the clap … nice girls don't let themselves get that … etc…")! Or help script "Reefer Madness" – though there's an image floating around in my mind of stoned writers putting THAT particular screenplay together!

actually, yours is the job I was aiming for when I was in college because I was fascinated by biology. My grades sucked, but I probably could have gotten the hang of technical writing, it's not much of a stretch from plain newswriting …

the $20 a pop on lottery tickets? I meant buy the $1 chances 20 at a time to increase your odds of winning. Usually the folks who win sink $25-50-100 on one ticket to improve their chances.

Also I would love to be able to do construction. I want to learn how to build a house from the ground up. I'd like to be skilled with my hands and to be able to create something like a home.

Then be a building contractor. They make tons of money.

Allina and SB, I totally hear ya.

Sometimes I feel lucky, because I do get to do something I really like to do and get paid reasonably well for it. However, there are a bazillion other things I could and would do if money weren't an issue: be a travel writer (a female Rick Steves, if you will) or a novelist (I've written a few things, just don't know what to do with it!), a gormet doggie shop owner, an artist (I've painted since I was 9), I'd hassle politicians, or a party planner. I'd be freakin' awesome at all of these things.

I feel inspired and yet also depressed by what I just wrote.

If you have the enthusiasm to do what you want then that is a green flag to go ahead with it. If you don't then your enthusiasm might evaporate and then it will be too late to start anything. So go and do it. I've built a house with my dad and it's not that hard. Couple of 2x4's and a good solid foundation and you're almost there.
