This is too funny, but small world isn't it?

This woman I had known from Meetup events for probably around 5 years, athletic woman, avid trial bikier/jet skier and actually a very fun woman. She's 45....I know this because she told me.

Anyhow, saw her profile on OK Cupid and she has herself at 37 years old (younger than me).

I sent her a note, "You sure you're 37, <her name>, lol!"

Ever had this happen to you? Some you know in real life, saw their profile online and just knew they were lying about their age or lied about something in their profile?

There's actually a woman at work I know that put herself as a non-smoker, but I know in fact she smokes.

What??? You actually believe what you read on profiles? The misrepresentation is so bad that if you tell the truth, you're knocked out of contention because everyone immediately adds 5 years to your age.

Haven't seen this personally but I don't have a lot of sample data either. None of the women I dated via OLD lied about such aspects.

Closest I could come would be a lady I knew from here as a friend whose profile stated she was 'trying to quit' smoking and being in her kitchen with her indicated no efforts in that regard. :D

There's one on POF whom I know through a family member. I saw in her in real life a couple of years ago.....buying two packets of cigarettes from the local Tesco!

The best is when they list themselves as non-smoker and have pictures of them either holding a cigarette or sitting at a table outside a bar hovering RIGHT over an ashtray/ligher/pack of cigs which are too convieniently placed to be somebody else's.

People don't realise that lies will unravel in real life.

I've never lied on my online dating profiles, I think it's silly to do so, frankly. People will find out regardless, and do you really want to start out on a lie?

Unless you're looking for a quick shag and nothing else, but then I imagine the other person doesn't care either.

I've seen this mainly amongst men online, not women. The last time I was on there, I saw the updated profile of a man I spoke with a few years ago. He's a year older than me, so he's 41, and he's pretending to be a 33-year-old man.

I think a lot of guys lie about their height on online dating too but I don't think I have ever seen a whole thread from a girl who encountered one of them !!!!

There are only 2 reasons to lie on dating sites.

1. You have no intention of ever meeting them and are living in fantasy land

2. You are only in it for attention and don't care what they think of you anyway...

If anyone wants a serious relationship they need to be honest.

I still have not forgotten the 6ft 2 guy that was 5ft 4... gutted about that one.

Yeah, she told she hadn't really "liked" someone in a long time.

Women lie about their age big time here and there. Not sure how often it happens, but they are so vein (is that the word?)

Anyhow, I've seen them lie about it on the "stats" section, but then "fess up" to their REAL age in the body of their profile, saying that "Well, I look young for my age and I get carded! LOL!"

Apparently they are gym rats with good genetics and such, so they are so into themselves that it's kind of a "bragging' thing for them.

*Update*, she "blanked out" her profile and took down her pictures. Guess she was embarrassed that someone found her out. LOL

I believe the word is vain.

I'm with Rosebud. This hobby of yours - picking people's profiles apart, and worse, calling them on things, is disturbing. Guys lie about their height, women lie about their ages. Get over it.

Don't even give yourself credit for her 'blanking out' her profile. I doubt you have that much influence, altho I'm sure she thinks less of you for sending that creeper message.

I don't agree with the lying on the profile thing, but calling her out on it like you did was really weird. Does that make you feel good, embarrassing someone you know? I mean, what are you going to do when you see her at your meet ups now? That was a dick move in my opinion. Just move on to the next when you don't like a profile.

I don't think what he did was that bad, c'mon guys. It's like a joke between friends or something in my eyes.

Right. No harm, no foul. We had known each other for years.

We had actually first corresponded on another dating website years ago Just before joining Meetup in its infancy.

We actually met Face to face at our very fiMEETUP. We kind of have been joking about it ever since. Lol. No biggie.

Well if you like women you might want to take it seriously that most of us think that is pretty weird and out of line for you to do though I guess it's your hobby??:confused:

So there was never any dating potential there.

Doesn't change my thoughts on the matter. Keep in mind I'm considering your history of this odd habit.

Some people lie about height, age, weight, income, location, relationship status, likes, dislikes, drinking/smoking habits or, well anything else really. And some people don't. I know personally I've never come across something like that.

But as an aside, if my "friend" found me on OLD and decided to 'call me out' about something he saw on my page I'd laugh and wonder why he didn't go and do something better and more productive with his time than policing my profile.

If the two of you were really good friends who tease each other about this sort of thing all the time, she probably would have played it back at you. That you are bragging about getting her to shut her profile down though, makes me think that you and she really weren't close.

I'm not sure what you were trying to do by calling her out. I CAN imagine that she will likely avoid you at your next Meetup. Besides her less likely to introduce you to her friends, it will hurt your chances with new members joining as this is one more person that they will sense doesn't like you.

My point is that your tendency to do these sorts of things may be quite a big reason why dating is so challenging for you.

No, there's a 3rd reason and it's the reason most people lie. Because they want to attract more people, and they figure that their award winning personality will outweigh the deception once they meet.

There's also a 4th reason. My dad's 85 and he's still active and dating, after 3 failed marriages. If he puts his real age on his profile he doesn't get any hits, for good reason. So he's 79 on most dating sites, he gets hits from younger hotties as young as 69!

That's awesome!! Go dad!

My uncle was 90 and dating a 56 year old. His kids weren't very approving. Life is short, go for it.

*sigh*

And you still think its a funny joke and no harm done, despite the fact her reaction was to delete her profile content due to being creeped out.

Listen, I had an experience with a woman on OK Cupid that had lied about her age on here. She told me on the phone (first phone call) that she wasn't the age she said she was in her profile...I gave her a chance, went out with a couple of times...then figured she'd be open to me telling her age after that....she STILL wouldn't tell me. That rubbed me the wrong way, so perhaps some of that came out in my email to this woman. Figured it was for her own good as I said to her she looks great for age and that she should be proud of the fact.

Also, I don't care if she doesn't introduce me to her friends as I've relied on my own means of meeting women and we rarely see each other anymore as some of the Meetups we were once in had been abandoned.

You met a woman from LS on OKC?

Anyway, she would have told you her age when she felt as if things were progressing, which they obviously weren't. I prefer to base my opinions on how someone acts versus a number. But, whatever works for you.

Things that we think are for someone's 'own good' often aren't. You aren't doling out helpful medical or lifestyle advice, you're picking nits. Sometimes it's best to keep your yap shut. You just admitted you basically did one woman wrong to get even for a past wrong by another woman (in your eyes). I don't have any doubt your judgmental attitude comes across loud and clear, in any social situation.

Cue: this is where you tell us how you come across differently here.

At 45 she will be getting 55+ year olds deciding to have a go, but by putting her age at 37 she may in fact get some guys her own age contacting her, ie 45.

Some women do not want to be with guys 10+ years older, altering her age may get her into a better age group of men, ie those of her own age.
