Can anyone tell me what some signs of BPD are? (Borderline Personailty Disorder)

The reason I ask is, it came up in a discussion I was having with some friends the other day who says she thinks maybe her b/f might have it. She also said she heard, that people who think they are right all the time or feel the need to be in control, and even people who have a habit of walking out on someone while in the middle of a discussion, even with a counselor can be a sign? I have never heard of that. Is that a sign?

I aslo have heard that some people can be diagnosed with one or two signs and have it, rather than a bunch of signs.

Is a great source..

and a book called "Stop Walking on Eggshells: Taking Your Life Back When Someone You Care About Has Borderline Personality Disorder" is a great book

I read that book front to back and got quite a bit of relief from reading it..

THanks AC I just checked it out. Was really interesting. I read/learned there is no pure BPD, it usually coexsits with other illnesses or disorders. That I did not know.

Can BPD be heriditary? Or any other mental illnesses?

Yes, but all herditary means is, you are more likely to get the condition than if you didn't have an affected family memeber.

Psychological, biological, and environmental stressors usually play a big role.

It's not about having just a few symptoms. You will know if someone has BPD, because they do a wonderful job of alienating themselves from everyone around them. If this person has succesful personal relationships, I would tend to think that they don'thave a disorder, they're just difficult.

That's about 80% of the population :)

Yes it can be hereditory, and it also can be environmental. Meaning, if one suffers from depression, and that's not treated it could lead to other mental illnesses such as being bipolar, etc...

IS this person willing to get help or be diagnosed?

Well according to my friend, she says her husband has told her before he thinks he has a problem of some kind, but he wont go get help for it. I hate to say it, but they are both these kinds of people who know that something might be wrong, but wont do anything about it.

She says some of the behavior he dsiplays are, he is angry alot, he yells, never talks about things rationally, he has pushed her a few times in the heat of an arguement. He acts impulsivly about things without thinking them through. He will walk away from someone if they are trying to explain something to him, that he doesn't care to hear. Things have to be his way, and he feels the need to be right all the time. He feels the need to be in control of things all the time.

I hope he will get help or at least consult a doctor or a counselor just to at least see. That has to be hard to deal with.

These are the people who wont be helped. Well, at least not until they truly reconize they have a problem and try to get help for it. Hard to say why people wont get help. Maybe;

1. They don't fully see theres a problem.

2. They feel its in their nature to be or act the way they do, so they leave it at that.

3.Stuborness, or Pride.

4. Do not want to accept the fact they could possibly have a problem. That might fall under pride though.
