Alright, I have been going out with this girl for a little short of 5 months. Sometimes I'll talk to her or be with her and she'll be upset about something (Nothing to do with us.) For example over the weekedn she was at my house and her firend called and was upset with her, this in turn got her upset.

I was there for her and tired my best to cheer her up but it wasn't helping much. So my question is, how do I cheer her up? Is there anything I can do or say to help her out? And then real quick, what should I get her for Valintines day? She's 14 and I'm 15 (No Chocolate.) Thanks for any help.

That's hard. Don't try to be a comic, because more than likely she'll know your lame attempts to make her laugh and won't find it funny. I'd just comfort her and be there, maybe find out what movies she likes and watch it with her or try cheering her up with a comedy.

Ah you know what, when I was 14, dating and upset, all I wanted my boyfriend to do was hear me out, validate that I was right to be upset.

I'm not sure i agree with Couscous about the don't try to be a comic. Sure, when she is very upset, don't try to be a comic. Just be there. But when you see that she is starting to calm down, make her laugh. I'm sure you know how to make her laugh. do realize though that only she can decide when she will cheer up. And that's ok.

Empathize and stay calm. Don't get upset just because she is. Listen to her. That's all you can do.

And please don't make the mistake of offering solutions to whatever her problems are. She knows the solution. But oftentime, when we're upset, we really just want someone who will listen to us.

Valentine's gift. My first boyfriend gave me a CD of our favourite band on valentines day.

The CD is a good idea.... I think it would even be more romantic to make a mixed tape....err, CD (am I showing my age??) of some romantic songs.

Thanks. Yah I wasn't trying to be comical or anything so thats good. What I basically did was sit there next to her and try to talk to her but she didn't really want to. So I just sat there and left her be for about 15 min and her friend called and they ended up sorting out their problems and hse was better. Then I basicall told her that I'm here for her anytime she needs to talk and I told her how much I care about her. Thanks for the help.
