VinaAmez Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Okay, sort of a problem here. I have a problem with falling asleep with no sound. I never used to have this problem but when I was in college I had to sleep with the tv on or listen to my headphones. So now I'm used to it and unable to sleep. I go crazy when it's silent. But the funny thing is if I wake up during the night I can get fall back asleep. It's werid. Now my H on the other hand doesn't like the tv on while sleeping. He doesn't have a problem with me watching it (he does to) BUT if I close my eyes or he thinks I'm sleeping he shuts it off. Even if I'm not he does it anyways. He keeps the clicker so I can't turn it on. He's like "if you sleep with it off enough times you'll get used to it." So I suffer until then? I don't think so. So after fighting over that crap I said fine and went to my Ipod. I figured I would fall asleep with that or listen to it enough to where I wouldn't need sound. Yeah he didn't like that. I feel asleep without taking them out first and he woke up in the middle of the night and seen me with them on. Anyways I don't know what to do. I can't sleep without sound. I'm so used to it. Does anyone know how to get out of this habit or make my H understand that I need sound. He will not budge on this.
polywog Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Maybe he will start snoring. Now that's a sound, and maybe it will solve your problem.

Oh no I can't STAND snoring but yet I can stand the tv or music. I turn the tv on to over power his snoring. Or I wake him up. If I REALLY can't sleep then I'll go downstairs and sleep.

If I REALLY can't sleep then I'll go downstairs and sleep. I hate snoring, too. Actually, I had (we just broke up ) the same problem in reverse. I can't stand having the TV on all night, and my SO needed it to fall asleep. Often I would just go on the couch in the living room with my book to avoid the TV, which was probably not great for our relationship. How about the sleep option on the TV? Set it for an hour so after you fall asleep the TV goes off? Surely he will compromise with that option? We did that (or I did that, I would turn that option on so I could get a good night's rest).
guin_girl Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I can't sleep without the TV or radio on either. I have to have it to fall asleep and others do not. I am a huge fan of the sleep timer... or else I fall asleep on the couch and shuffle in later. Not a romantic plan I know, but I will grouchy if I don't get my sleep... and then there's no chance for romance
Author VinaAmez Posted January 30, 2007 Author Posted January 30, 2007 He's usually in bed before me. Sometimes I'll watch tv downstairs, fall asleep, wake up around 2. and go to bed. That's if he doesn't come looking for me. Or I'll be on the computer for a while. I don't need a lot of sleep so if I stay awake past 2 then I can't fall asleep. Especailly if he's snoring. I do use the timer but he shuts it off before it kicks in. I don't get why I need sound. I never use to need it. Probably one of the reasons why I'm always tired in the mornings. I think it's been 6 years since I've actually woke up and not tired. There was only one time when I had a deep sleep and woke up and felt great. I miss that.
serial muse Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Maybe you could compromise with some sort of "white noise" sound - for example, a fan whirring (which works for me) or one of those CDs that plays waterfall or wave noises? I think they also make them as CD player/alarm clocks. I like having some sort of steady noise when I'm trying to fall asleep, too - less jarring than occasional noises like house creaking, traffic going by, etc. It's soothing.
dgiirl Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Read up on anxiety. I cant sleep without some sort of noise either. Because if I dont hear the tv, my thoughts are racing a mile a minute. When I told my therapist, she's like "Oh that's anxiety!". I still cant sleep without some sort of noise, but I got it setup so that the tv screen is off, but I listen to the tv like a radio with a timer. I'm getting better sleep.
Author VinaAmez Posted January 30, 2007 Author Posted January 30, 2007 I used to have anxiety attacks. They went away after I got out of college. To much stress for me to handle. My mind does race like crazy. If I'm not thinking of work, I'm thinking of something else. And if I'm not thinking of something else, I'm thinking of my parents. If not them I think of something else, etc... I could go on and on. Then I look over at the clock, see what time it is and the start worrying if I get to sleep or how much time I will be able to. Then by the time I figure that out more time goes by and then I worry about that. It's like a chain reaction. That's why I was using the sounds. It distracts me from this ^. I even have a hard time holding still in one spot at night. I'll stay in one spot then have to move again and again until I fall asleep. It's nuts I tell ya. That's also why I try to stay up until I can't any more. I fall asleep easier. My mind is always on the go. Even while I type this I'm thinking of what I'm going to do after this, etc...
guin_girl Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 That's also why I try to stay up until I can't any more. I fall asleep easier. I do find that I fall asleep quicker and stay asleep on the days that I work out. And it doesn't have to be anything super strenuous, but it sure does help!
magda Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Have you ever tried something like a fountain or white noise instead of music?
alphamale Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Have you ever tried something like a fountain you mean like sleeping in a water-fountain? how would that help?
serial muse Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Have you ever tried something like a fountain or white noise instead of music? sniffle...no one listens to me. i think i'm like white noise...

This is exactly what I suffer through. I need to listen to tv in order to fall asleep, otherwise my thoughts take over. Will CBT fix this? I'd be interested in trying it if it'll make me sleep better!
Author VinaAmez Posted January 30, 2007 Author Posted January 30, 2007 Do you all really think that I need therapy?

No you'r not being ignored. I read what you said. I have tried the fan but there is an annoying ticking sound that it makes. There is no way I could do the waterfall. I don't feel like spending my nights peeing. Maybe I should try something like a sleep pill. That would make me sleep and I wouldn't have to worry about sounds.
Jeffrey Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 That's how it is in my house, my DW cannot fall alsleep without the TV on. I cannot fall asleep when it's on. So, we now go to bed at different times with her going down 90 minutes or so before I do. It's all routine now and working well.
