Actually 1 lb of fat weighs the same as 1 lb of muscle. :)

1 lb of fat occupies more space than 1 lb of muscle in your body therefore you can actually gain weight (muscle) but lose inches...

Here's what I found that leads to the controversy. I tend to believe that a piece of fat the same size as a piece of muscle is not the same weight.

In our weekly fitness Q&A series, William Sukala, MS, CSCS, clinical exercise physiologist in the Cardiac Rehabilitation department at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, answers readers' questions about fitness, from whether to eat before exercising to how to treat sore muscles.

Q: There seems to be quite a bit of controversy over whether muscle weighs more than fat. If I am weight training and increasing my muscle mass am I likely to see an increase in my weight?

This is a great question and one that has been the center of debate for years! First off, remember that the scale only tells you your entire body weight. It does not tell you the composition of that weight. And it is body composition that really matters.

Muscle does not weigh more than fat, any more than lead weighs more than feathers. A pound is a pound is a pound. Where the misunderstanding often comes in is that muscle is much more dense than fat, so that, by volume, it seems to weigh more. That is, a pound of muscle occupies less space than a pound of fat. In addition, because a pound of muscle burns more fat than a pound of fat, even at rest, by increasing your lean muscle tissue mass, you're helping your body burn more calories.

I don't think PG meant it directly at anyone.

You can say you don't like fat women, you don't like tall guys, or Asian women, or Republicans, or blondes, or people from Iowa... no matter what, someone's going to be offended.

And his comment was about weight - what the whole point of the thread is about. Totally on topic...

I think there are some oversensitivities flying around here.

You know, you can make a comment that's not directed at anyone in particular and still be offensive.

I thought what he said was perfectly descriptive.

To each their own...

Uhm...you can be descriptive AND offensive at the same time.

Yes you can.. just like in the OP the poster uses the term FAT.. that term can very well be offensive to many people as well...

I have seen many posters including some trying to take a poke at P_G saying potentially offensive things on other threads..

Why single out a person on a controversial thread ??? I have seen 4-5 potentially offensive terms used to describe heavy people on this thread but nobody mentions them.

On threads of controversial material posters need to have thicker skin..

I'll add this too, it's slightly more offensive that some were coming up with names about a poster who could be banned, and come back again - Hense going off topic completely.

What was said in all honesty was pretty tame, I've heard MUCH worse by other posters, especially certain threads that are offensive to begin with.

Well those comments were meant to be humorous...were these comments meant to be funny? I think not.

How about bringing Dadaal's thread back on topic ?

I personally thought it was an interesting thread until it took a wrong turn..

Obviously not, but he wasn't trying to offend anybody. Geez, he's not the only one who says offensive things, we've ALL said stuff in the past and probably will continue to at some point. I think people need to grow a thicker skin and stop personalizing the comments which are NOT directed at them.

I totally agree with you...hey, I wasn't the one who had a problem with his heffer (sp?) comments anyway...but others did. I was just saying that you CAN be offensive without aiming your remarks at anyone in particular.

Hey, who HASN'T been offended on here at one time or another. Haven't we all? It's just like in real life. Some of us call the person out on it and get over it and some of us ignore it. And others just can't let it go.

I think it's ridiculous to try to censor people to such a degree. I'm not the one who reported the poster for using the word heffer. He's entitled to his opinion and if some are going to get offended by it, so be it. That's the price of free speech.

What's that expression about not liking what someone says but I'll defend to the death your right to say it? That's how I feel about this.

If someone doesn't have a sense of humor and saw the comments as offensive (on other thread) so be it.

I happen to agree with you. I just saw this after I posted my last post.

I admit to being guilty of going off topic and ribbing P_G. :o

Sorry about going off topic, and I know it is technically wrong, but there is hardly a regular poster who is not guilty of the same crime on an almost daily basis, whether it is to joke around, flirt, or banter about sports.

As for ribbing P_G, I like him; I *think* he knows that, and I take much of what he says with about the level of seriousness that he says it.

I can see the point, though, that posters who are new, and don't know him, might take him more seriously and find him offensive.

Lastly, and I am a bit hesitant to say this b/c it is hard to figure out a way to say it delicately, but there is an unintentionally comic element to Dadaal's threads (b/c of the way he chooses his words) that seems to make them susceptible to hijacking. I will try to be more respectful of him in the future though. :o

You are right and to be honest, heffer isn't the most offensive word used for a fat person. I've read ALOT worse on past threads about fat people...And PG wasn't on those threads....

great topic and I just had to respond to this man. As a guy that has some waight on me 6foot 6" I am 205 pounds and half of that must be mussle meaning I am not one of those guys that if I take my shirt off my bones are gonna be seen - nor do I have 6 pack but My stomach is pretty hard and there is no fat that would wiggle around even if I sprint. So I love women who are middle waight pretty much in the normal range. Pretty much according to me perfect women should be never thin nor fat(fat like the point where you can see some of the fat bouncing up and down) but they should be at the point where there is some fat on their butt (after all guys love nice butts not ones that cannot be seen nor ones that can be seen from a mile away). I think that the crap about hollywood is just rediculas the chicks there are annorexic exept one or two who are kinna fat. I love chicks that are well rounded not thin nor too fat. Yes, exactly. See, I wasn't arguing about whether HE was offensive. I was only saying that one CAN be offensive and not even mean to be.

I'll give an example, getting back to the topic at hand. I've been too thin my whole life. Here are REAL comments I get in my every day life:

God, do you EVER eat?

You're a stick!

Are you anorexic?

You look like you'll blow away with the first strong wind.

And on and on it goes. My whole frickin' life I've heard stuff like this. It hurts me but I know that these people who say these things don't outright mean to be offensive. But it IS offensive to me. I mean what if they made those types of comments to a bigger person.

God, do you EVER stop eating?

You're fat!

etc. etc.

I just blow it off. But yeah, I don't like being called a stick anymore than a bigger person likes being called a heffer. But the fact of the matter IS that I'm thin. And some people ARE fat. So what? Some people call a spade a spade..or a heffer a heffer, as the case may be. That's the way it is.

I'm not a big fan of being too PC myself but I never outright intend to offend anyone. And I'd venture to say that the poster who made the heffer comment wasn't outright trying to offend either. But he did obviously. That's life, like I've said.

That is exactly the problem, thicker skin.

I know, really. I don't know how some people get through life if every little thing thing they find offensive gets to them. Hey, if you're alive and living you're going to be offended sometimes. It's part of life. Deal.
