coco_milkshake Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 Hey guys! There is one thing that has always puzzled me. When people are of a specific religion and want to be true to it, why is it that they will only pick and choose which parts that they want to follow and which parts that they wont? For example: I am Sikh. It says in the Granth Sahib (our Holy book) that all men and women are considered equal. Our culture does not reflect that at all. Sons are still desired more than daughters. Seriously I have never seen my Gran smile and the only times she did was when my first nephew was born 5 years ago and when the second one was born 3 months ago - thats it. Her face was a picture when my niece was born. My mum goes on about the caste system a lot. We are Jatt Sikh and Jatt is the highest caste in the Sikh religion and my mum is so arrogant about it, it makes me sick to the pit of my stomach - its like she looks down on others who are Sikh but are not the same caste as us. Our first Guru and the founder of Sikhism condemned the caste system saying that everyone is equal - yet it still exists today. I have noticed a lot about my mum that she does tend to pick and choose what she believes in and Im wondering if that makes her true to her religion or not. I pick and choose what I believe in, in terms of our culture because it totally contradicts some of what my religion actually stands for like that example I mentioned above. I wouldnt say I am a true Sikh. If I was one I wouldnt have dated outside my culture. Im just curious I suppose. Does anyone else feel like this?
alphamale Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 you're talking about cultural influences COCOMILKSHAKE....those are totally seperate from the religious teachings. both sort of intertwine and many times conflict with each other.
Love Hurts Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 I’m ok that God made Adam first and then Eve. Knowing God sees us as equals if he didn’t all females could blame men for our mistake. Man would take the blame for our sins. In the end God fearing females expect to stand on their own before God and be held accountable for the life they lead, for the things they I said and did. If God didn’t see females as an equal… why would he judge females equally as man? A few reasons a male is desired in the family; Males carry on the name of the family. My fathers name will not be carried on through his family of daughters. Males can do that rough and tough stuff easier, more often than females. Stuff like working on cars, cutting wood or building a house. Not that women can’t. I’ve done all that next to my father, for the lack of a son to aid him. When a female gets married, her father has to pay for the wedding. Every time another daughter is born… you already know she is more expensive than a male. Through out their lives females are generally more expensive; clothing, hair, nails, make up, jewelry, shoes and lots of stuff they do need and stuff they think they need. Just a few thoughts on the subject.

Because humans are remarkably adept at screwing up even the best and greatest things.

I know it as "cherry picking" and it is one of the things that puzzles me about people too. I guess it's just human nature to conveniently ignore certain things about their espoused belief system. I attribute it to human nature, which as you are discovering is rife with contradictions. The best advice I can give is get used to it because you'll find it everywhere.
My Fair Katie Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 I know it as "cherry picking" My Fair Husband (a recovering catholic) calls the practice in his ex-faith Cafeteria Catholicism.
