It's sort of the "Near Beer" of religions. Or religion lite.

I much prefer to keep my Catholicism as a cultural identity than trying to find a religion that is consistent with my atheistic/agnostic leanings.

This is how most Jews think of themselves anyway. Start using the "G" word or talking about praying and they get the creepy crawlies.

yeah, i've noticed that and as a group it seems to me that jewish people are usually a step ahead, but i'll get flamed for making generalizations.

You could become one of us for the jokes like that dentist on Seinfeld.

But seriously, I don't know that it is a positive way to live anyway. When your parents insist you're bat mitzvahed but tell you God doesn't exist it kind of makes you cynical.

Yes. It was a big social event but lacking in much spirituality.

I don't think it is like that for everyone. I think there are many Jewish parents for whom it is very much a spiritual event and they pass that on to their kids.

Unfortunately growing up Jewish was a mixed experience for me. I was bullied in Hebrew school by some scary b*tchy girls. One of our rabbis got caught cheating on his wife with a congregant and thrown out. Then the rabbi who replaced him was horribly depressed b/c his young son had died of a brain tumor. He told me once that I could pray but not to expect an answer. (On a positive note, I was valedictorian of my Hebrew school confirmation class! :o:rolleyes: )

All this probably influenced my decision to let my H. raise our kids Catholic.

well... being a Jew is really more a life philosophy than a religion. It also gives one a lifetime membership to a very exclusive club.

Not believing in God doesn't mean you can't be a good Catholic.

This came from a movie (can't remember the title).

I thought this was kind of cool. We are sometimes called "the children of Israel." Israel was the new name given to Jacob in the OT after he wrestled with a mysterious spirit i.e. God.

So, the Jews are the people who wrestle with God.
