Ok I saw this in another post and that post basically locked down. But what I was reading was very interesting.

Who in your mind should dish out the punishments to the kids of the family. In my family it was always my mom. In my other households it was my friends fathers. In a couple of other familys it was both parents which in my mind is worse lol because the kid can't play one against the other.

But lets hear what you think, and please keep it clean.

In my family there are four parents , myself and my H the boys Dad and his wife . We all do our best to stay on the same page with discipline and all take charge of discipline when we are with the kids .Its important to not hold off on punishment "till dad gets home " with younger children b/c their attention is focused on the now rather than hours ago at the time of the offense. So if whoever is with them , of the four of us , we take care of it right then , when they are clear about the event and the consequence.

Best time to dish out punishment is at the time the situation happens, especially for the very little ones. This means that the adult who was supervising the child at the time, would be the one to mete out the punishment. The other spouse should support that decision, unless the punishment exceeds the problem. Punishment should only be a learning tool for actions and consequences.

I'm strongly against corporal punishment. It isn't necessary.

the best is when one parent plays "good cop" and one parent plays "bad cop".... this is very hard to do in a single parent household...

You don't need to be in the same physical household to work in tandem. This is why it's important to continue civil contact with your ex. Suck it up and be an adult for the sake of your children.

Sorry, found this one so true its funny.

There shouldnt be ONE parent that is the punisher. It should be a UNITED effort no matter the living situation.

Essentially punishment is about teaching kids about rules. And the most important thing is to raise a well-balanced person with respect for rules and authority. So, I agree with te poster who said that whoever is with the kid when it happens should respond.
