What are yours like?

Mine was pretty lame. There was a buffet of not so great food, and some wine. It was in a realtively small room, and people hung out for a couple of hours and then just left. Not very exciting, although I did get a bit tipsy. It was at the end of the business day and in the office, so I didn't even bother inviting the H although I think I could've.

H's was the exact opposite. They rented out a pavillion, and basically 2 bars. There were food stations all around, and about 1600 people. There were 2 DJ's and a live band. Free beer and wine and a cash bar for mixed drinks. Get this. He works for a popular clothing line, so there were male models walking around with jeans, flip flops, and Santa hats, no shirts. Very very strange, but nice to look at. You could get your picture made with them too, although I didn't. What else? A large ice sculpture and before we arrived, high school students singing carols. We didn't end up needing them, but they also had cab vouchers for the partiers. It was surreal and nothing like I've ever been to.

Which experience is closer to the "norm"?

They planned a big posh one here, but when they totalled up the party goers, they seemed to realise it would be too expensive. So they decided to move it to a Thursday night (instead of Friday) and at a terrible venue in the middle of no where. The result - a cut in numbers wishing to attend, and a cheaper party..!

Terrible. I didn't bother going....

.... at a beautiful restaurant in downtown Sarasota area...cash bar, 3 choices of entree, appetizers outside on the plaza, ice sculpture, DJ, dancing...unbelievable.....

...tonight, it's at the main office....I'll let 'cha know!

I don't even think there's going to be any liquor! 6-8 p.m.

Have no idea why the big change, except that it was proably very xpensive...over 500 people w/catering....

Last year was the Christmas party from Hades.

First, the day we all got back from Thanksgiving we were given a secret santa partner. When I made (very little) noise about not wanting to participate I was patronizingly asked, "Ohhh, I'm sorry are you Jewish?" NO, I'm not Jewish. "Oh, well you don't have to spend a whole lot, besides someone already drew your name and it just wouldn't be fair..." For craps sake. UGG.

So then the Secret Santa starts. But oh no, this is not a normal SS endeavor. Nooooo. You are expected to buy your special someone one thing every week leading up to the Christmas party when the big reveal would be. Oh goody goody gum drops, I have to buy 4 or 5 presents for someone I don't even know! And likewise I get to get crap from people who don't know me. Hey, enjoy those off-price holiday candies, I'm sure you'll toss them just like I'm tossing this cheap coffee.

For the evening of our party we went to one of those Chain Japanese Steakhouses (in other words a heck of a long meal to sit thru). We exchanged our SS gifts. No one cared. No booze was provided though you could buy your own. The party was after hours for TWO hours and it was MANDATORY. And no, of course you can't bring family. Why would you want to be with your family after work hours when you could be with the people you just spent the last last EIGHT AGONIZING HOURS with. And just because it's mandatory doesn't mean you'll get comp time for these hours. Don't' be silly!

Sorry to be a Grinch, just nothing annoys me more than forced office socialization. I work so I can play during my free time. You know, with my friends, the folks I CHOOSE to socialize with on a regular basis.

Times I've been working for a small firm/company, the Christmas food and drink session has been good fun. Larger office parties make me feel like an extra out of...well, The Office. The festive season really shouldn't begin on that kind of suicidal note.

...apparently, no one from the condo where I work is going to the party except for me...yeah!!!! I get to be the representative....hmmm...went over at lunchtime & they said they're closing the main office (where the blessed event is to take place) at 2 p.m. That means now, at 4:15, they're getting things readied? hmmmm....I felt like I was coming down with a cold? (wishfull thinking?)...and almost felt like I was going to rush home...my bf got his xmas bonus...sounds like more fun!....anyhooo....I guess I'll go for an hour...that would be appropriate...see what's cooking & then split.

our holiday party is 4-6, at a local bar. Of course i do not get off work until 5, and they are charging us $15 a head, and all we are getting is "heavy snacks" and they are not paying for any drinks.

how lame is that? so i will be joining the "party" at 6.

otherwise, the hoilday party we usually have resembles that to a 5th grade pot luck witha gift exchange.

that figures....civil service is at the bottom of the food chain. High-powered & prestigious law firms have the best XMas parties....champagne, caviar, pate, bottomless jumbo shrimp, dancing girls...wow!

.....actually an open house kind of event this year...there was great food:

stone crab claws, shrimp, pita rolled sandwiches, corn salad, cakes, baklava, cookies, punch with Sourthern Comfort (added by the owner's husband!), music.....and there were little stockings given out with scratch off lotto tickets as well as a raffle of gift cards & one week either paid vacation or a check for one week's worth of work!!!!

I actually won a "Roy's" $100 gift card that can be used at Carraba's, Bonefish Grill, Roy's etc....I think it will be Carraba's ....we will be eating & drinking well!!!!

Like I said, last year it was held at a very exclusive restaurant but our owner wanted to give to her employees rather than pay for the rent of a restaurant this year!

Good choice, I'd say!

Gosh, some of y'all have some fancy parties!

Our office doesn't even throw a party. We go out to lunch and exchange Secret Santa gifts. That's it.

It's nice though, because then we're allowed to take the rest of the day off to go Xmas shopping or whatever. I took myself home early and polished off a nice bottle of chianti

No, it would be a high-end property management firm...

Our was pretty average. It was 4-6 and we were standing up and being served drinks and finger food. Few people from the office got up and sang carols and I tried really hard not to laugh. I ended up drinking way too much champagne and didn't really want party to end at 6 even though we were all being kicked out (there was around 50 of us). So 8 of us decided to go on to some other bar and kept on drinking. After that, we lost 2 so there was 6 of us left and we went out to dinner. I got back at 11pm and it wasn't earth shattering but it was pretty good, considering it was my first Christmas party at current place.

Oh yeah some horrible married 50 year old that was old enough to be my dad wanted to take me back to his place because wife was away. Disgusting.
