I've been dating a man for 5 months now. He has two children, boy and a girl 10 and 12 yrs old. I've only met them briefly months ago and I just found out I will be spending one day over the holidays with them. The reason I haven't got to know them is I wanted to make sure my bf and I were going to have a long term relationship. I didn't want to meet them, get to know them, and then be out of their lives. I don't agree with that.

The kids live with their mother. Shall I buy them just a small gift each? Or should it be a larger gift each? The whole day will be spent together and it will be probably awkward because we don't know each other. So it's kinda of a getting to know each other day as well. I don't have a clue what to buy..I don't have any kids. Oh my I'm quite nervous about buying something stupid:)

Make it a small gift each. As far as what to get them you have the best resourse in the world. Ask their dad.

I would ask the Dad what he feels is appropriate. I don't know if he'll be as good of a resource about what to get them. After my parents divorced my dad only gave me money for birthdays and Christmas. You might have to have him ask the mom!

How bout a joint token gift that isn't so personal. Maybe a basket with popcorn, movie candy, and Block Buster gift card. Gift card to an arcade. Just a thought.

I think IfWishesWereHorses is right. It's probably wise not to put too much effort into gifts for his kids at this stage. The more effort you put into giving them something special, the more appreciation and gratitude you'll expect in return. And unfortunately (and you can't exactly blame them) kids in this type of situation don't usually respond to "Dad's girlfriend" in an appreciative way. Trust me -- I've been there.

Since you don't really know these kids that well, get them something small and somewhat impersonable. They'll probably take it and mumble, "Thanks" and that will be that, and you'll feel a little icy about their lack of enthusiasm. But you'll have spared yourself a lot of time, money, and hurt -- and turmoil between you and your boyfriend -- in the long run.

And -- no matter how small the gift (believe it or not) -- the gesture will be remembered and appreciated by your boyfriend AND the children at future gift-giving events.

Best of luck!

i agree with you on that.. its not fair to the kids to get use to someone then a month later theyre out of their lives.. good thinking on that

how old are the kids? might be easy to buy a few little gifts.. ask your bf what theyre into..

I am agree to Bonehead;you should ask about gifts (choice) to the kid's father .
