Things you got from your mom:

Books! She is always great and picking books that I will enjoy!

Things you got from your sister or a close friend of the same gender:

My best friend (who is like a sister to me) always gives me pretty sparkly things that I love but would never normally buy for myself. She also makes jewelry and made me an absolutely fantastic amber necklace one year that I still wear

Things you got from your bother or close friend of the same gender:

My brother made me a lovely wooden bowl. It's a work of art.

Things you got from your grandparents or dad:

My dad loves nice pens and got me a very fancy one after I graduated college

Things you got from a not-so-serious boyfriend or girlfriend:

I had a not-serious boyfriend get me this really nice watch one Xmas. I felt terrible because I actually wanted to end the relationship and had gotten him a really lame, cheap Xmas gift. After we broke up, he wouldn't take the watch back, so I wore it for years. It was great.

Things you got from a serious, committed or practically betrothed boyfriend:

My last serious boyfriend gave me a dresser. It was in his bedroom and his giving me a dresser was his way of saying "I want you to move in". We ultimately broke up down the road, but I still have the dresser.

This is such an interesting thread! I wonder what gifts I've given people over the years that they still have?

Things you got from your mom: less a "what I got" but more of "what I did" with her – when all the other kids lived at home, we opened gifts on Christmas morning, but because it was just me in the end, she'd let me pick one gift to open the night before. She'd also do a daily count-down to my birthday, which is the week after Christmas ... when I moved out of the house, she'd call me every day, saying "your birthday is in X days," etc.

Things you got from your sister or a close friend of the same gender: oldest sister is good for quirky, unusual gifts that are definitely me

Things you got from your brother or close friend of the same gender: definitely the cassette recorder my brother gave me when I was 8 or 9. My next-door neighbor and I would spend hours recording commercials on the dang thing

Things you got from your dad: Money!

Things you got from a not-so-serious boyfriend or girlfriend: junk that I've passed along to one of the grandkinds

Things you got from a serious, committed or practically betrothed boyfriend: round-trip ticket to Las Vegas several years running

Things you got from your husband or wife: James Avery silver has always been his best gift ...

As for myself:

Things you got from your mom: I normally never expect anything from my mom, but one year she gave me a handful of old b&w pictures of my dad when he was between 17-20 years old. They were the best gift she ever gave me, in the way of material things. In one of the pics, my dad bears strong resemblance to my (now) 30 year old son, Will.

Things you got from your sister or a close friend of the same gender: My friend, Gayle, gave me a handwritten story by her mother about the historical mountain town she grew up in. Gayle always knows the things I will treasure. She also gave me a lovely tapestry depicting an Italian village overlooking the sea. Her best gift to me is her friendship -something I enjoy year round.

Things you got from your bother or close friend of the same gender: It wasn't a thing -it was an event: my brother invited everyone to *his* house for Christmas dinner one year. Normally, he doesn't go to all that trouble: he just makes the "rounds" to visit everyone else during their holiday dinners.

Things you got from your grandparents or dad: My grandmother, Martha Jane, gave me a quilt she had made that took the whole year to complete. My dad, on the other hand, was giving me little gifts meant for boys ever since I could walk (Smile). Some of the things he gave me were red pocket knives, wooden toys he had whittled from wood himself, a cowboy hat, toy guns and holsters -but once he gave me a dress that I cried over. Not because it was pretty -but because I thought it was so ugly I wouldn't have worn it to chop wood in! But he always meant well. (Smile)

Things you got from a not-so-serious boyfriend or girlfriend: Over the years I have received miscellaneous scanty lingerie (Red panties with jingle bells on them!), massage oils, bath oils & other bubbly bath stuff, trinket jewelry that ranged in price, perfume that was all wrong for me -and perfume that was just right, wine (a fav gift for me), chocolates (to die for!), and a ton of stuff from some that were well-meaning -and then some that were not so well-meaning, after all. My favorite? The wine, perfume, and chocolate.

Things you got from a serious, committed or practically betrothed boyfriend: Some of the same gifts described above -but more serious in regards to the price.

Things you got from your husband or wife: My second husband gave me jewelry most of the time but he also planned special events and outings for the holidays. He gave me a huge a diamond once -totally unexpected- that made me cry (the tears were from the touching things he said) and even though jewelry is not my most desired thing in the world, I've kept it all these years just for the sake of recounting that memory.

(Smile)

From Mom: A leaf blower. She actually bought it for my husband, but it was on MY list. I love that thing.

Close girlfriend: She bought me a "boyfriend in a box." Corporate Craig. It tickled me endlessly.

Close guy friend: Baked goods. Seriously, the boy baked me brownies one year, cemented our friendship forever.

Grandparents: My grandfather died when I was 12, 2 weeks before Christmas. I was the only grandchild he was able to buy for that year. He bought me a puffy coat. Looking back on it, it's ugly as h3ll (fashionable for back then). I still have it. I can't throw it away, it means so much to me.

Not so serious boyfriend: CDs.

Serious boyfriend: Mother of Pearl earrings.

Husband: Last year he took two of my favorite VHS tapes and transfered them to DVD. Made menus and a nifty label. I appreciate the time and effort he obviously put into it. It meant more than anything he bought me.

Just musing -but...there's a picture forming, here.

Not surprisingly, it appears that the gifts we cherish most are those that are *made* by someone, aren't necessarily store-bought, those that are truly & intimately personal and define who we are to the giver, or those that -even though they aren't exactly the "perfect" well-thought-out gift- come straight from the warmest, most sincere heart of the giver.

Takes some of the stress & pressure off the whole gift-giving thing, doesn't it?
