guest Posted December 2, 2006 Posted December 2, 2006 Ok, this is a highly unusual problem. I hope you don't judge me I really need help I am a 26 year old guy. I have been living with my mom for 25 years. I was a lazy bastard. She'd buy me all the clothes, and she'd choose them herself. To give her credit, she always tried to push me to buy my own clothes, but I was always lazy, I'd go like "mom, for pete's sake just buy me anything that looks nice". Fast forward to now. I now live alone. I am not happy with my wardrobe. I said to myself I need to change. I need to get some new clothes. I went to the mall, and then... I am ashamed to say this... I was scared. I had no idea what to choose or what to do. I have never even entered a fitting room to try clothes on. I saw tons of different pants, shirts, jackets... etc etc. I had no idea what I should be doing. What colors do match? what colors do not? Should I buy something with stripes? I know this sounds like a joke, but I swear it is not. I didn't buy anything, and returned home with nothing. Do you guys have any suggestions on what to do to choose clothes? I am willing to make mistakes and learn from them. Thanks a lot in advance
KittenMoon Posted December 3, 2006 Posted December 3, 2006 Do y ou have any female friends you could shop with? Most girls could pick out a new wardrobe within a few hours- guy's clothing is blessedly simple. Barring this, go to the mall, hit a dept store (like Macys or Sears or whatever is in your area) on a non-busy day, at a non-busy time. Like a weekday in the morning hours. Find a youngish female sales associate and explain you have a very outdated wardrobe (avoid mentioning mom lest she think you're weird) and you're looking to replace the bulk of it. Have her help you pick out simple items- like well fitted jeans, khakis, sweaters, a few nicer shirts. Ask for help in sizes- my experience has been most guys pick items a size too big and they look slouchy. Stick to solid colors unless the sales associate seems trustworthy, patterns will just confuse you right now. If you can afford it, fancier chain stores like Banana Republic or J Crew have fashion forward sales associates that are generally very helpful. Good luck!
someone2 Posted December 3, 2006 Posted December 3, 2006 Thanks again and sorry for the confusion with the age thing I really appreciate your help. Hope things will be better tomorrow
Ssheena Posted December 3, 2006 Posted December 3, 2006 You could also pick up a GQ or men's style magazine and see what they have in them for men's fashion to get an idea of what "some" say is trendy. Look in the clothes you have now for your sizes. Look at what other guys are wearing now and notice when you see someone wearing something that you like. Good luck!
