Hi everyone,

You might think this is a stupid question, but I really don't know the answer for sure, so please help if you would! I just started "going out" with a guy. He's nice. But he said we would say we were "going out" instead of "dating," and it's pretty confusing to me. Does anyone know what the difference is between the two? Also, if you say you're "going out" with someone, does it make him/her your boyfriend/girlfriend? Or is that more of a "casual" word that might not lead to anywhere? When do you know that someone is your "boyfriend/girlfriend"? Do they have to tell you explicitly? I'm really confused ... please help! Thanks a lot in advance!

He's basically saying that he enjoys your company and enjoys taking you out but doesn't want you to get the idea that he is ready for any sort of commitment yet.

1. Also, if you say you're "going out" with someone, does it make him/her your boyfriend/girlfriend?

2. Or is that more of a "casual" word that might not lead to anywhere?

3. When do you know that someone is your "boyfriend/girlfriend"?

4. Do they have to tell you explicitly?

1. No. It just means you go out on dates and spend time together.

2. Its more of a casual thing. Going out = dating - commitment.

3. When you get signs of commitment from the other person - intro to family, being included in future plans, etc.

4. It would sure help, eh?

To me, "going out" with someone means more than "dating."

But, you need to ask HIM for clarification. Just tell him that you love being with him and you are wondering what he means by "going out." Tell him what you it means to you.....get the discussion rolling. Tell him what you want in terms of you two.

By talking, you'll avoid a lot of trouble down the road. He may think "going out" means exclusivity. Someone else might think it means "dating several people."

So, ask him. No one else but him can give you the right answer.:) ANd he'll appreciate you being straightforward.

They do have to ask you out to be bf/gf otherwise i can be a bf to someone famous :p

and going out for me is bf/gf , but if he hasn't asked you out yet then your not his gf.

Ask him how he feels about you.

The way i hear people using those terms today, 'going out' and dating' mean pretty much the same thing to me

but the best thing to do it to ask him.

going out = casual fun stuff

dating = serious fun stuff ( hope so )

Wrong---guys hat to talk about relationships! But that is not to say you should not ask him. Just say, so is it just you and me? Or can we go out with others?

Be sure to use the term "we" because if you use "you" it puts him in a much superior position. "We" will get him thinking that you are not completely smitten and will go out prowling for another bf.

It depends on how each person views the terms "dating" and "going out."

There is so many different terms people come up with now a days that I need a program because I can't keep up.

Dating

going out

steady

bf/gf

courting

seeing them

Make up your mind people. Which is it?

If you go out and then have sex then you're dating. If you don't have sex then you're only going out.

I just wanted to thank everyone for your input!! It's helpful!! I guess I shouldn't worry too much about it for now, but I'll certainly wait for a chance to clarify with him what he means. Thanks again!
