Benji86 Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 So I was watching this show on television, and it stated the brain emits pheromones which allows one to find another human that has the best genes most compatible to their own, basically an attraction for survival of species. They also stated that it is something that cannot be avoided, and gave the example of people being attracted to people who are complete jerks or entirely not for them, but are attracted to them for that reason...anybody else find this to be fascinating? Or is it just me

Or is it just me Well it's not exactly the brain that 'emits pheromones'. That being said, all pheromones do is contribute to sexual attraction. If you let your groin rule your behaviour, then yes you might get stuck with a 'jerk' but if you use the organs located above your neck, you don't need to hook up with someone just because that person turns you on. If you really want to be fascinated, read up on oxytocin.

I am going to go to Barnes and Noble tomorrow to see if they have any books on the make up of the brain and how it functions....I have gained a want for knowledge on the topic!
Author Benji86 Posted November 22, 2006 Author Posted November 22, 2006 I have read up on oxytocin and it indeed does fascinate me. These kind of things make someone studying biochem very happy to read I have so much more to learn!
IfWishesWereHorses Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 I agree Benj, that these things are undeniably fascinating. I was raised by an engineer and just recently when I had a few life changing experiences it didn't take long for me to jump on the net and read about all of these things. Phermones, oxtocin response, and other neurotransmitters roll in attraction are simply means for insuring procreation of the species. Wow, I really wish that when my parents sat me down to have the Santa talk they had just gone ahead and said - no Virginia, romantic love as you believe in it doesn't exist! Kinda a bummer to figure that out at 40. An interesting book to read is "Love and Limmerance" by Dorothy Tennov. They really should teach this in Highschool and this book should be required reading!
