Benji86 Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Okay, so something strange occured the other day. I was told by an anonymous person to read the book Persuasion by Jane Asuten....initially, i had no idea what it was about, and simply responded by asking why? and then they responded again with the answer if you only knew what it was about. Can anybody help me out here? I have been confused the past few days thinking about it and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! =)

(My skeptical side tells me that the stranger was just a kook, and nothing should be made of the remark.)
norajane Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 What was the context of this conversation? We don't have enough information to be able to tell you how the book applies to you.
Author Benji86 Posted November 14, 2006 Author Posted November 14, 2006 to tell you the truth...it was completely out of nowhere. They made the comment, I asked why, they said if only I knew...I dont know if this is something to actually look into, or just look at as a joke or something i think that it might be referring to an ex of mine?? We dated on and off over the past five years, and things were pretty serious...but she called things off this past summer. I have a small basis of what the book is about, but not a full understanding. And plus...for someone who is not a huge fan of reading novels, I'd rather just get a synopsis of the book
norajane Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Without reading the book, you miss all the subtleties. But I guess subtle isn't what the recommendation was about. When Anne is young, she is engaged to a young naval officer with no money whom she is very much in love with. But she is persuaded by a family friend to break her engagement - she is told she should be married to someone with more money and of a higher social class. Years later, when she is still single and practically a spinster (at 27 ), and her family is less well off, they meet up again with her ex-fiancee. Now, he's a Captain, he's got lots more money, and is considered a great catch. There are some other ladies after him...there is another guy after Anne (but he proves to be a scoundrel)...there is some courting and and some misunderstandings, and eventually, the Captain and Anne reunite and decide to marry. It's a story about social class and listening to other people vs. true love and making up your own mind.

norajane Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 Well, did your gf break up with you because you're poor and a lowly student, or from a different social class? Is she rich? Did she start dating someone rich or a med student or investment banking major? Did someone persuade her to break up with you because you're not "good enough" for her? This anon person must have been reacting to something you had said, no?
Author Benji86 Posted November 14, 2006 Author Posted November 14, 2006 someone, if not a couple of people in her family, namely sisters, she talked to influenced her decision in breaking things off. things were pretty serious, we fell upon hard times as most relationships will come along, but it is almost as if she bailed on me, you know? she talked to her family/friends about it and this ultimately influenced the outcome. i dont know where this anonymous person came from...i havent really talked to my ex in about five months or so, when the break up occured...and they just appeared out of nowhere
Storyrider Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 That book was also referred to recently in the movie (can't remember the name right now) with Keanu Reeves about love and time travel. One of the most important thing about the book is that Anne still loves Captain Wentworth, regrets breaking off with him, and wants another chance with him, even though it has been years since their engagement ended. Could someone be trying to tell you your ex still loves you?

Could someone be trying to tell you your ex still loves you? The thought has crossed my mind, however it is something that I never would have seen coming. Like i stated previously, i dont know if this person is being serious or if it is just somebody deciding to play with my head. When things were called off the most recent time, I lost a lot of hope, but not all of it. But I really dont know, what you have stated is possible.
Spinderella Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 In the film "the lakehouse", a Sandra Bullock played a woman from the future who corresponded in writing to Keanu Reaves, from the past. A part of the story included Persuasion by Jane Austen.
