Sometimes I get this really strong urge to fall asleep in the afternoon (like around 3 p.m.). This can occur even when I've had a full night of sleep (which is rare, but does happen on occassion).

I don't think it's narcolepsy or anything.

Has this occurred to anyone else? Does anyone else just get really sleepy like this?

I'm not any medications or anything like that which could make me sleepy. I wonder if this is normal....

That happens to me a lot too. It's really noticeable if I'm at home at the time or I'm sitting down in a class. If I'm at work though I never notice it. I think it's because my job requires me to stand up all day.

Maybe you're just not active enough?

You know, you are right. It often occurs while I'm not doing anything, such as when I'm listening to someone give a lecture. You can't believe how many times I've fallen asleep during afternoon class while listening to some professor speak.

But I also get these bouts of being tired when I'm doing something active, especially when it requires a lot of thinking.

I just don't know why my energy levels tend to taper off sometimes during the evening.

I wonder if that's just how my circadian rhythm works.

Try taking vitamin B.

When they put people in rooms with no clocks or windows for a week to see what 'normal' daily patterns are, they fall asleep mid-afternoon. Our hormones, etc. naturally take a dip at that time of day.

It's happened to me my whole life and people around me mention it, too. It's normal.

Try to combat it by getting up and walking around to get the blood flowing more. Also be sure you're hydrated - it's a few hours after lunch and if you haven't been drinking water, you could be starting to dehydrate, which will also make you feel tired.

You can also try having a small snack with protein and carbs (a couple crackers and some cheese maybe).

Could be diet related as well. Perhaps you aren't eating correctly...? You need to eat the right things at the right time to fuel your body correctly. For example, if you eat a lot of sugar around lunch time, it could be your body sugar level crashing again, therefore making you feel tired?

Try eating a banana or perhaps a wholemeal sandwhich or something similar. Something which gives your body the correct fuel to work with.

That said... when I'm in a training course in a training room, I struggle not to fall sleep everytime. I think it's just the environment...!!
