Approaching people at parties is not hard, but a lot of us make it that way. I have gotten very comfortable with working the room over the years. Of course, I have gotten the cold shoulder plenty of times. But a good rule of thumb is to keep your intent with meeting the opposite sex friendly at first. Of course, you might be wildly attracted to them and they to you. You'll find that out soon enough. But at first, stick to the basics.

Go up to the person and say, "Hello. I don't think we've met. My name is ______."

She/He says, "My name is _________."

You say, "Very nice to meet you."

Then ask what they like to do for recreation. Skip the work question until either they bring it up our you run out of things to say. Of course, if you are a workaholic too, then launch right into that.

If you are with friends, work the room together. Keep the conversation on topics that interest both of you. Look for reactions from your audience. If they look bored, smile, say a few more things, then move on. No one gets bothered by just a few words, even from people they don't want to talk all night with. A simple hello and continue working the crowd. If the entire crowd is kind of not your scene, then leave early and make plans for the next party. But at almost every party I have ever been to I have found someone to converse with.

I met my soon be be ex-wife at a coffee shop. Just introduced myself.
