samsungxoxo Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 To actually twist or hurt your back if you're almost everyday at work lifting garbage and I'm talking about heavy piles of trash.... But hey, it's fun doing it. One of them I did it alone, but it's usually two people doing it, unless someone's sooo fat. It's one thing if you're of a certain age, ex: 90 then you can hurt yourself, but if your 19 (like me) or of young age, then no that can't happen.
PandorasBox Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 Yes, you can do serious damage to your back, lifting heavy things especially if you are not doing it properly. There are right and wrong ways to lift things. But most peole don't think of that when lifting certain things even trash. Is it bothering you? Hurting? Do you feel you pulled something? If so you might want to get checked out. Its one thing to pull a muscle, but quite another if you rupture something.

But I just get soooo annoying at the workers making those comments, like if I was an indefenseless being, "Oh be careful, you could break your back". If they can do, so can I.
SmoochieFace Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 I'm invinsible at this age. ... Yeah, that's what they all say... until a 'life-altering' event happens.

I did a lot of dancing when I was your age, semi-professional (at shows and private parties). 8 years later my knees hurt. Not because I injured them recently, because I thought I was invincible at 19. What you describe is your ego getting injured so you try to over compensate. But IME injuries tend to show up over time, not immediately.

The thing you've gotta remember is there is a right way and a wrong way of picking something heavy up. If you do it the wrong way you could put your back out.
Author samsungxoxo Posted October 17, 2006 Author Posted October 17, 2006 Thing is it annoys me a whole deal when they say that. They assume just b.c I'm a gal, I'm not suitable for that kind of task, but I am just like them.
Cheshire Cat Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 It is very possible to hurt your back lifting weights and the workers making those comments are probably not belittling you - just warning you.

I've been on a lot of construction sites and it seems to me the guys say that to each other a lot.

Author samsungxoxo Posted October 17, 2006 Author Posted October 17, 2006 You go girl. Just make sure you lift things right. Thanx bro., I'm no less than them. If I do it right, nothing will happen.
Ross_K Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 Keep your back straight and bend your legs so you lift with them instead of lifting with your back by bending it and keeping your legs straight. The lower back is a weak link and it's easy to do damage to it.
Walk Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 I fractured three of my vertebrae in my 20's. Snowboarding... Thought I was invincible. Go me.
