Guest Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 I've been with a very good man for almost a year now, and I consider myself very lucky. He's gentle, smart, in good shape, he's got a good job, he's great with kids and he's a very attentive lover. He even cooks, cleans up and puts the seat down. But there's one thing that I have real trouble with. He snores. Not a little. A LOT. It's LOUD. I'm a light sleeper, too, and I guess that doesn't help. When I spend the night at his place, I'll often get up the next day exhausted because his snoring has kept me awake. I've tried using earplugs but they're too uncomfortable. I don't understand why. He's not overweight at all (I had done some research which said that snorers are often overweight). He doesn't smoke, his health is good. He knows he snores too, because he'll ask me in the morning, "Did I snore last night? Did I keep you up?" and when I say, "Yes, you did," he apologizes and really seems to feel bad about it. He hasn't been to a sleep clinic yet, but he's told me that the only thing that he knows of that would help is some sort of machine with a type of mask that fits over his nose & mouth and keeps his airway open. He hasn't tried it yet, but we've seen the machine and it looks awfully uncomfortable to wear. I don't know what to do. He's like the perfect man for me, except for this one problem.
Sand&Water Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 Guest, Your post sort of made me chuckle. In a good way, because it must be very annoying. I don't know what to tell you. Or, what you should/can do. I would never ever be able to tolerate snoring. And, I don't. I pray to God, I don't end up with one since I, too, am a light sleeper. You have to decide if it is going to be the deal breaker in the relationship. Good luck.
KittenMoon Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 What about those nasal strips that are supposed to help breathing and reduce snoring?
quankanne Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 sounds like a classic case of sleep apnea, and there are ways around it. Have him go to an ear-nose-throat doctor to see if there are any obstructions to his breathing passage*– believe it or not, even something as simple as a deviated septum can throw things off-kilter. from personal experience: I'm on the machine, and yeah, it takes a couple of weeks of getting used to the mask and the forced air, but gradually, you do. In June I had my septum repaired and it's done wonders. I can actually sleep in any position. I'm pretty sure I've got a slight problem, but my ENT has ordered a follow-up sleep study to see if the machine is still necessary, but in my case, a drop in weight ought to do the trick, since it was a weight gain that brought the problem to light. don't despair, his snoring problem can be corrected.
Hitman10000 Posted September 14, 2006 Posted September 14, 2006 Sleep in different rooms. Problem solved. Best advice in thread.
lovestruck234 Posted September 14, 2006 Posted September 14, 2006 My Aunty had a snoring problem and now she has this machine she uses every night when she sleeps. It's like a gas mask hooked up to a machine thing and she doesn't snore now....or so i would suspect...(I don't sleep with her so I'm just guessing...)

She stayed at my house once and she had to use y bed to dsleep in cos it was closest to a power point. Anyway, I slept on the couch and I woke up delerious not knowing where I was so I went back to my room, thinking that I must have fell asleep on the couch by accident.... Holy SH*T! Scariest thing I've ever seen. I thought I had walked in on Darth Vader as a woman!!!!
Rooster_DAR Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 Most men snore, no matter what their lifesyle is like. Maybe you have issues with sleeping.
Guest Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 What about those nasal strips that are supposed to help breathing and reduce snoring? Thanks for the suggestion, KittenMoon. He picked some up today and we'll be spending some time together this weekend. I'll let you know how it turns out!
Sally00 Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 Ok. Whatever you do, don't break up with him over snoring... To me, that's a pretty shallow thing to do. I think you should go to the doctor with him and see what things he can do. I stayed up with my friends all night one time and we talked. Eventually we fell asleep and I noticed how HORRIBLE my friend's snoring was. Dude, it was AWFUL. I thought he was gonna die or something!! He had a case of sleep apnea along with other things. I'm pretty sure the reason why is because he is overweight. But now he uses this machine. I don't really know what you call it. It really works though. So I suggest going to the doctor about this. They know more than us. Good luck!!
Jeffrey Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 My DW snores, sometimes it's very problematic but the strips seem to help a lot. Another thing you can try is a humidifier. But, some people just snore no matter what. Good luck! Thanks for the suggestion, KittenMoon. He picked some up today and we'll be spending some time together this weekend. I'll let you know how it turns out!
