veronese Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 My 11 year old daughter is soon leaving to go to a special needs boarding school. I know it's perfect for her educationally and pastorally but I'm going to miss her so much and wish there was an alternative (there isn't) But dealing with my emotions is nothing compared to seeing how scared and unhappy she is at the prospect. As the day draws nearer her fear is increasing. I've been careful not to project my feelings on to her but I'm woefully ill-equipped to know how best to reassure and comfort her. Has anyone experience of this? Have you any advice for me that may help? I'd appreciate hearing from you if you have. Thanks veronese
Outcast Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 I read a lot of neat books about girls at boarding schools when I was a kid and always thought it would be a ton of fun. Rent The Trouble With Angels - a great old film about girls at boarding school. I would hope since it's a special needs school that the teachers and staff do their best to make sure it's a good experience for the girls - and surely you've visited and seen how things are?
audmc911 Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 The only advice I can offer would be to write her a letter daily and visit her often. That's got to be tough on you. Separating from my daughter has been difficult at best and she's 15. She still sneaks in and sleeps in my bed! I've been a single mom for 13 years. When she was at camp, she loved it, had a great time and I was home miserable and missing her. Write her every day and visit often - and work on letting go. It's tough. And remember, you're being a good mom by letting go and giving her what she needs. Good luck.
Pink Amulet Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 This is definitely not what you want to hear.... I went to boarding school, and I still feel sick when I think about my mother and father doing that to me...
Pink Amulet Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 I just noticed you said "special needs" boarding school.... I am not sure what you mean, but that sheds a whole new light on the subject.
