Guest Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 I am in a local band and we just got together in Feb. The guy that is the "founder" of this band is a marketing idiot. He doesn't listen to his audience. Plays stuff that no one will listen to and is in a hurry all the time to get songs right or drop them from our playlist. He is also a paranoid attorney, so everything with him feels like I am on trial. He thinks the world is out to get him and is always worried about someone taking advantage of him or his "music". I try to market us, I don't get paid to do this, I do it for the betterment of the group and he has issues with alot of what I suggest. I really like everyone else in the band and don't want to quit but it's hard to deal with him. We really play some good cover tunes, but he has this original "songlist" that he loves to play over and over. Anybody ever dealt with people like that? What's the best approach?
directx Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 If you really want to stay in the band, I would hold band meetings and bring this up almost exactly as stated here, carefully removing any personal attacks. You may want to suggest having band meetings once a week anyway. This will allow you at the very least plant these seeds of thought in all the other band members. If you have to, make up a story on how in a past band there was someone just like him and it ruined the whole band. People are more apt to listen if they think this occurrence has happened before. If no one cares, get out. (but only after you have something lined up). Because if this is the case the guy is in complete control and everyone else is a lemming.
alphamale Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Anybody ever dealt with people like that? no, not in a musical environment. my only advice is if this dude is the owner/leader of the band that you find another band
Outcast Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 Yep. What you need is consensus. Maybe your ideas aren't that great either. If none of you is experienced in marketing, then perhaps tossing some ideas around among all of you will result in some useful ideas that all will agree to use. With luck, the other band members will back you up and his vote will get lost in the shuffle
