The ego gets fed by having someone think you're wonderful. It doesn't necessarily matter if that someone is "up" or "down" - it's the flattery of the worshipful nature that is at issue, not the status of the worshiper. In the case of someone who simply gets off on lying and having someone believe those lies, then up or down doesn't matter either - the only requirement is gullibility (though maybe "down" will be more gullible than "up" depending on the definition of "down"). A third possibility is that the spouse is "up" and the reason for cheating is anger or humiliation (perhaps the spouse is acting like they are a better person, i.e. smarter, better looking, more successful, higher class, etc.) in that case the WS may be looking for someone even more "up" to prove to the spouse that they aren't such hotsh*t after all. . . (of course the converse could also be true, and the WS would cheat "down" to find more comfort in someone they didn't feel they had to work at matching all of the time.)

I mean if a super unfortunate looking man stated I was the hottest woman on earth I would not think it was that grand. Afterall he is not my type nor holds any meaning to me. But perhaps it is a minor ego boost. (as long as done in a respectful manner) But if a super hot man said the same thing and held a desirable (in my view) social position I would be more flattered and get a much bigger ego boost. (again if done in a respectful manner) If either man approached me and said "you are so hot I want to suck your tit"..... I would actually feel like it was a complete cut down. I would get an instant ICK feeling from the fugly guy even more so than I would probably feel from the hot guy. (please keep in mind that I find a flattering comment to be more in line with ....... "you are very attractive and do wonderful work", not "hey hot ass I wanna poke ya rrrrrreal bad") new thread idea that may help men.......how to properly compliment a woman
