Guest Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Hi, I imagine that thiS has been covered before but: is it legal to open my BF's email account if I find his password with a key logger?? He needs to be watched, but I don't need a legal hassle if he finds out. Thanks in advance, Roxanne
P1xie Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Laws with internet are still vague. You do not have any right though to be using a key generater to open his private e-mail it's like going into a mailbox and opening mail. What does he need to be watched for?
Chinook Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 In the UK it isn't legal and we're usually way behind the USA so I would imagine not. Activities using key logging software are only legal when the participants have full knowledge that their activities are being logged... i.e. some govt departments and companies will use it to monitor their IT systems. Other than this... I don't think so but I'm not an IT legal eagle.
Tony T Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Viewing your boyfriends email account would be an invasion of privacy and would be classed as a civil matter. You could not go to jail but, if he wanted, he could sue you. Then, he could probably only get a small amount of punitive damage because he could hardly prove any real damages unless you stole valuable information and used it to profit. It's highly doubtful he would ever take it that far. I think if you feel so compelled to read a guy's email, you just ought to break up with him. Obviously you don't trust him so why hang around. This is an awful way to live!
stoopid_guy Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Hi, I imagine that thiS has been covered before but: is it legal to open my BF's email account if I find his password with a key logger?? He needs to be watched, but I don't need a legal hassle if he finds out. Thanks in advance, Roxanne Is it his computer and internet account? If so, it's not legal for a hacker (which is what you are) to do it. If it's your computer and account, it's a bit grey and would depend on whether he wanted to press charges and how good a lawyer he could afford.
RecordProducer Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Don't do that! Been there, done that (not keylogger, but snooping). It only hurts and at the end turns out it was nothing, but in the meanwhile you suffer, argue, feel bad, go crazy out of jealousy, etc. I didn't do it cuz I suspected infidelity. I just wanted to see what was going on and who contacted him. Bad idea! If he is not suspicious, don't wake the monster up. If you suspect that he is sleeping with someone else, you will find other signs, I am sure. Emails are very bad guidelines. You may find stuff like "Hi, sexy" and - that's it. He's cheating. You're breaking up. He's lying and you don't trust him anymore. And it can be totally nothing. You most likely won't find anything like "The sex last night was great, hope your GF didn't find out.."
FredTravels Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 I imagine it falls into who owns the computer where you installed the software. If you install it on his, it could very well be criminal and classified as breaking and entering and vandalism. Not hard time in the slammer but a misdemeanor nonetheless. Now if you own the PC and he is using it, you have every right. This is the same rights that parents have to use them for their kids and employers for their employees.
whichwayisup Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 He needs to be watched Why? What is he doing? Also, how long have you two been together? Why not just talk to him. Let him know that you won't put up with him cheating so if he is he has to come clean with you (because if you find out on your own, it's OVER) and then see what he says...
Guest2 Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 I hacked into my ex's email account and I'm ever so glad I did. My hunches were confirmed- he is a cheating, lying, twofaced SOB. The mails were very clear - he and other girls discussing in great detail what they did sexually - no doubt he was screwing around. There are services that will find a password for you. It worked for me and was worth every penny. Uncertainty is over and I can move on with my life. BTW, he has no idea I found out - it will be up to him to wonder why I no longer talk to him. Paybacks are a bitch. Good luck to you.
silktricks Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 This is the same rights that parents have to use them for their kids and employers for their employees. Employers don't even have this right for employees, unless they notify those employees that in advance they may do it.
jerbear Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 Now is the computer your's or his? Both of you are allowed some privacy and trust. Monitoring your SO is not a good sign of trust. Even if you own the computer, you can access files and remnants of deleted files without a keylogger. If you log on to his work's email while using a keylogger, both of you maybe in legal jeopardy. You broke a law by accessing an system you are unauthorized to use. He for getting a compromise thru his account. Employers don't even have this right for employees, unless they notify those employees that in advance they may do it. Employers do not have an explicit right to monitor but they do own have an implied right. In addition, employers own the data and transmission of data on the computer. Notification thru policy is just a CYA and "being nice" without surprises. Why have a key logger when they already own the computer, the data, and data transmission...
Cowboy86 Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Here is a link to the software that I have used on my home network for my parents to watch my little borthers and sisters. It's totally free and doesnt require any activation. Logs everything. Takes screen shots,Logs all IM conversations, all keystrokes, passwords, logins, and tells you which site they belong to, All files saved during the time on. Work in stealth mode. Shift+Control+alt+M I believe. You'll never know it's there no splash screen. Just make sure to configure everythign properly otherwise he will know it's there. doesn't show up in add remove programs or if you search for it. http://www.filefactory.com/file/8048dc/ Click downlaod for free with free file hosting then ont he next page it says the same. If it makes you feel more comfortable virus scan it after download. I hope it helps.
Nicholas Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 It would not be smart to click that link. Keyloggers, along with any other script kiddie tools, are not known for their clean distribution. It will be difficult to find one without a virus. Then again, I suppose you'd be getting what you deserved.
Cowboy86 Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 He is very right that it is not smart to click random links and download the files. It is in a .ZIP file for this reason. Like I said virus scan it before use if you think there is any problem or just find it online and download it for free somewhere. Also, it isn't a script kiddie tool.
